George Kollias is one of the OGs of this ridiculous breed of death metal/tech death drummer. For many of my generation (I'm 29) George was probably our first introduction to truly "fast" drumming. We'd be happily watching some Kerrang TV in 2005, thinking Joey Jordison is the fastest drummer alive, then suddenly Sacrifice Unto Sebek comes on, and your whole world shifts. I guarantee you, people like Alex Rudinger grew up listening to this guy.

@@HabAnagarek Joey was probably the most obviously skilled mainstream drummer at the time. Well, maybe Danny Carey and Carter Beauford too. No matter what, he had serious chops. Sure, if you start moving away from the mainstream you find other guys just as talented or more so, but he broke through to the general public, which is no small feat. And its not like he couldn't play or wasn't pretty fast. Like say, Lars. Joey's stuff still is tasty even when you discover those other drummers.

Pressure swivel technique no real towed to heal heel to toe movement you have to find a sweet spot on the footboard down till the beater slightly comes back from the head, like twisting the wrist not the arm , some krank up the springs , some have a bounce feel to them ,like when you do double strokes into almost a buzz roll, start slow"" most give up" until they get the motion.of it but to master it fast and consistently, many will never achieve that" finding the balance on your footboard is like finding the balance on your drumstick with two fingers letting the drumstick balance in your finger so you can blast beat without much effort what the drumstick work for you just like the drum pedal

I have a pair of George's signature axis pedals and I actually had him sign the pedal for me at a nile show. He noticed I put skateboard grip tape on my pedal board and casually mentioned that he would probably grind his feet off if he had something abrasive on his pedals because of his foot technique XD

I saw Nile live 11 years ago, and it remains one of my favorite live shows ever. They're nowhere near my favorite band (I'm not really a big tech death guy), but they just had a damn good time with a fair amount of variety by genre standards... and of course, George Kollias was a big part of what made that show special.

I don't know why, but this particular video of him didn't have me that impressed. I mean, yeah his blasts are fast as HELL, and the accuracy is definitely nuts... but I don't know, it just didn't do it for me? To me. watching someone like Alex Rudinger is 1000x more entertaining and impressive. I haven't seen many videos of Koliais so maybe this one is just a bad example? I'd like to watch more videos of his to get a better idea. But in my opinion, doing 16th note fills around the snare and two rack toms isn't THAT fun to watch.

With Tony Laureano and Derek Roddy, he is one of the drummers that tremendously elevated the level of Death Metal drumming in the 2000's, even though he came a bit later than the 2 others. Crushing speed and power, with impeccable technique, his drumming is just insane. I know you privilege Patreon picks but a reaction to Kevin Paradis: Sensory Amusia - Pain would be interesting. We can see some flam accents, during blast beats while changing hand. The latest extreme metal drumming video that literally blew my mind.

Kollias is a beast! Because he grooves at insanely high speeds. Went to a clinic of his once, he talked about the swivel "technique" and explained that it was something he just started doing, but it's been taking a toll on his knees, because it really messes with the joints. Don't try and copy the swivel, it's not a technique and it's better to learn to do it without the speed. He practices for hours to do it less. Shame he's too fast for his camera's framerate too. Awesome drummer!
