This dudes not bad. Decent amount of bad info here both shown and said. If you’re doing a one time home improvement this way won’t kill ya but if this is how you make a living then just a few pointers that will save you time as either an hourly or piece rate installer every second counts. He’s smart by using spin drs on any offset however it seems he is putting them where he sees lippage. They are made for corners. Every corner gets one. If your substrate is trash then occasionally you’ll throw a clip in the middle of a tile but it’s almost never necessary. Before that I hadn’t seen a level line for the bottom row to build on instead he’s throwing full tiles on spacers. You’d wanna shoot a laser and find your low point. Mark with a pencil and snap a line. The bottom row is always point to point cut. I’m commercial and that’s standard. This will make it so regardless what the floor does it will never grow above a full tile that could potentially leave sliver cuts or uneven joints as the installer would have to stuff shims on one side of the wall to compensate the difference or leave it to the finish on the ceiling👎. If you’re using spin drs they serve as spacers as well. In this case he is using eighth inch. No extra spacing is necessary. Now the layout here again isn’t a big deal. His way is actually faster than the right way which would be to center the wall or center tile but if you can’t get away using a full half system with good cuts you usually won’t get called on it unless the prints spec it out.In this situation with that profile of tile and it being wall+spin drs you’d want to spread each tile with a half inch trowel. He makes up for that somewhat by spreading both the wall and the tile though that way takes a lot more time and makes much more of a mess. The next day when you come to knock off the clips it’s easy to pop tiles while using the spin dr system when using too small of a trowel which could be why there isn’t footage of popping the wall. When knocking the spin drs out hit with the grain. If the wide part of the clip is up and down then up and down to release otherwise you’ll be left with plastic stubs you’ll have to come back and knock out after. When making the outlet cuts your wetsaw is the only thing you need. Pull the vertical marks on the face of the tile the flip. A graze from point to point on the back will prove sufficient as you can simply knock the marked area off by lightly tapping it on the tray of your saw. The outlet cover covers a lot more than you think and you won’t get any grief from not cutting perfect around the box and both screws. Been doing this since I was 17 and I’m 34 now. Have yet to run into a complaint. Lastly if you’re using epoxy just let it cure. No reason to waste all that time and material putting that tape up to caulk. When cured nothing will stick or obstruct a perfect bead with a quick wipe. It’s epoxy that’s the whole point so coming back for 10 minutes another time isn’t a big deal.Def not trying to seem like a jerk or seem rude here. We run one of the premier tile companies here in Colorado completing projects like Empower field(mile high stadium), DIA Westin, Coors field and much much more. You can’t drive a mile with our driving by something we’ve done. Anyways I hope this helps. I won’t be on any other of your videos as I just stumbled on this one when searching for wshh fights episode 50 and felt obliged dude. Take it easy

Hey man! Always appreciate getting feedback from a pro! Definitely some lessons learned on this one - but it is only a DIY project for my own home. I learn more every day. I did not have any chipping issues with removing the spin Dr's, but man there were a lot that broke off in the joints that needed to be removed with an oscillating tool. I will definitely be more careful with that next time. It is such a small bathroom that I wasn't too worried about the "compounding error" that can happen as a result of not making sure everything is PERFECTLY level. But for bigger jobs, I 100% agree. Thanks for taking the time to watch/comment and I'll keep a look out for some premium tile work next time i'm in Colorado. Take care bro!

I appreciate the disclosure about not being a professional tiler and that you're open to better way of doing things. I've watched SO MANY tiling tutorials on KZbin in preparation for some DIY tiling and you're the FIRST to make such a comment, cheers! Pretty much EVERY tutorial I've watched so far goes about tiling VERY differently without ever acknowledging WHY their chosen method is superior or that they're aware of alternative methods AT ALL. It's actually really disheartening when people giving tutorials do so with such confidence and authority without ever acknowledging that there could be a better way. All they would have to do is search for like tutorials to see just how differently other people do things. So again, I thank you for your honesty and humility.

Wow you did an amazing Job!! Setting a Herringbone pattern is very difficult!! Hopefully you used a Quarter inch trowel in the shower, and not an 1/8th. I didn't watch that video so I am unsure, but I did see you used a Quarter inch on your 12×24s. 12×24 in tile Recommended trowel size for those are a half inch notch. I don't see it being a huge issue because it's not in the shower and it's your House!! But if those 12×24s were installed in the shower that would have been a big oopsie!!... You want 95% coverage on Shower Tile no matter what trowel size you use. I always use a wet sponge as I Go, to clean up any thinset. I see you learned your lesson on that one, but that's ok because I bet you will not do that again!! Lol. Lesson learned!!.. I am very impressed overall!! Very informative video!!...

Use the spin Doctors on the corners that's what they are designed for. Sometimes depending on the style of the tile being layed you may need a leveler in the middle, especially if it's plank tile. I am very Impressed Overall!!.. I wouldn't call myself a Pro I guess because I have been humbled by thinking that way before. There are always new things to learn as The ways tile is being installed is constantly evolving and changing!! But I will say I am a Second generation Installer, my Father was an installer and I have been setting tile since age 17 and I am about to turn 40. Good stuff man keep up with the trends and don't stop learning!!

Tile today is a perversion of what it used to be. The old timers didn't install warped tile, so they didn't need a tile bending system. They pulled concrete on walls, so that the walls wouldn't be warped either. The old stuff lasted forever and it is a sin to tear out the best work and replace it with garbage that won't even last half as long.

Great video 👍 Im nee to tiling and already started tiling my shower walls, what would be the ideal choice of trowel for 12x24 wall tile? I read everywhere that I have to go with 1/2 inch notch, i started using 1/4 x 3/8 which is stated to be used for 12x12 tile and 12x24 is essentially two 12 inch tiles fused together, so i see no point in using 1/2 trowel at all, especially that you have no room to move the tile to collapse ridges.

What I was looking for, and thought I saw, is that tile is cut through out the tiling process - Not all cut prior to install. Also, since the Thinset is good for four hours (+/-) did you mix part of it several times through the process? Finally, bucket cleanup. I assume the same bucket is used for each batch of Thinset. How did you prepare the bucket before its next use? How was the waste disposed of? Thank you in advance. Great video - Thanks for sharing.

We, it's the first time I tiled bathtub/shower walls... Let just say thank goodness it's a guest shower.. We made lots of mistakes but learned from them.. I will say that my tiles are not all the same size from the box, which threw our lines off.. Almost each tile was a diffrent length out of the box...ahhgggg.. Unfortunately, I waited to remove the thin set, and yes, what a pain.

About to start on my first job in the laundry room. Do you have a list of things i should buy to make this as least complicated as possible?

Is it possible to put tile like this over existing dry wall, or do I need to rip out the old dry wall and put on what you did?
