Mazda MX-30 review: great to drive, full of tech. Tiny range!

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. I didn’t have long with the car but it’s smooth, great to drive, comfortable, full of tech and looks quite handsome. Downside? Well… it’s the range, isn’t it. 124 miles!
So here it is, my review of Mazda’s first EV. I recommend you get yourself a test drive as it may surprise you (in a good way).

I share with you my experience after 6 months driving a MX30, and not just test-driving it for a few hours, MX30 is absolutely a very gorgeous car, inside-out with outstanding finishing quality and very comfortable and pleasant to drive. BUT WHAT A SHAME!!! Technically as an EV, MX30 is useless! When the temperature drops to freezing point or even near, driving range on the highway drops to 110KM (140KM off highway) and worst is the charging time, it takes over 3 hours (in cold weather) to recharge the battery on a CCS 50KW/h charging station and not 45 minutes as announced by Mazda! You need to stop 3 hours at a fast charging station to be able to drive less than one hour!

Northern Italy, after 2 years and a half of ownership: global avg consumption is 11.8 KWh/100km. It means around 250 km. Very happy with my baby. If it "fits" with your daily mileage needs (and you can recharge by night, at home) you'd love its uniqueness.

Getting one next week as second owner (only has 4000 miles on it, so basicly new but got it at a very good price. The range is perfect for us, only need 40-80 miles per day, and can charge it at home. We must have 2 cars anyway, so we have a diesel for longer drives (or when we need to go the whole family), but this will save us 80% of the gas money each month.

Some of us don’t do many miles per week let alone a day. My mainly city driven estate has only done 4,260 miles and it will 3 years old at the end of October, 2023. For me the range seems adequate and the weight saving against other BEVs is sensible. Long journeys are behind me now and there are more than a few others I suspect who this might suit.

We're getting ours this week. The range really isn't an issue for us as we rarely go that far. If we do decide to travel a bit further, there's plenty of chargers around now for us to top up and keep going without too much hassle. Definitely not a car for everyone by any means but I can see it being a perfect car for quite a few people. Once you get over that initial shock of the range, it's a great car.

11000 miles with the MX-30. Its really nice to drive. You sit really well, great seats. Stereo is great. Room for the dog. Obviously it has its limitations but still use it all the time. Prefer it to the leased id3. If you cant decide if you are going to Berlin or the local supermarket this is not for you. Sadly tend to go work, shopping, kindergarten and not Berlin, but were all different? Great review😃👍

@@MrEV As an EV the id3 is better. But just feel a lot more at home in the Mazda. Look forward to driving it every day. Quieter. More snug if that is the right word. Higher mys/hygge score in Scandie tongue. Does that make any sense?

I mentioned in another comment that I am becoming an EV owner soon. One of my big questions was "Will I be able to make cross Europe road trips". Your videos of the Lands End -> John O'Groats reassured me that range issues can be met and managed. Most of the year I will be driving relatively short trips, but the need for me to road trip to my beloved Italia or South of France or etc etc once or twice a year are essential for me. Thanks to your videos - I am really reassured!

Fantastic production on this video, Andrew - very professional. It wouldn’t work for me as a first car, and if I were in the market for a second car to get around town on shorter journeys, I personally would opt for something smaller. Lots to like about it, but I’m not convinced they’re going to sell too many of these!

Nice review Andrew. I have an eGolf which I absolutely love but I so so wish it had more range (and it has more than this). My daily commute is approx 30miles so as a daily driver it’s perfect but I am fearful of taking the wife on any journey that will require roadside charging as I can just imagine the grief that I will get for going electric. I think smaller battery size on a new EV like the Mazda is an interesting choice but then they should give it much faster charging than 40kW so that long journeys can still be attempted.

Yes. In fact, a Hyundai IONIQ would be far better. Even a second-hand one with a tiny 24kWh battery charges faster, goes further and is arguably more practical.

Andrew, cracking video. We have pulled the trigger on a less than 2 yr old top spec example with 8k miles for £18.5k - basically not even broken in yet 😂 My nearest and dearest who is nearly, but not quite as opinionated as Mrs EV, watched it too and it ticks all the boxes that we are used to with our ICE CX-5. I'm heading over to the mainland to pick it up next week and the will have the pleasure of getting to know the charging curve (or lack of thereof) when I drive it back to NI via the Holyhead to Dublin ferry. At least it's not winter! Keep up the great work.

@@MrEV We test drove one here before buying (saved £4k compared to local dealer's price) and yes defo premium and good to drive. We're still years behind even Wales nevermind Scotland and England but there is a glimmer of hope - the (originally public funded) ESB chargers are no longer free to use and are getting upgraded and Weev Charging here just received a £50m injection from Octopus Investments. They have already build a small network here which has been received well but this will help big time but is only really a start. For us, we have home charging and wife has access to a destination charger. There is also a newly built leisure centre 1 mile from our house which has 4 x 22AC chargers which are currently free to use! I will be adjusting my dog walking routine to take advantage of the 11 KW AC goodness lol!

good analysis! coherent with reality, and with the context in which the mx-30 was created. you didn't limit yourself to criticizing the banal, as many do, making a report very focused on what really matters. congratulations for your work. I'm a little anxious, because I should receive my mx-30 later this month, or at the beginning of August. for me, it fits like a glove, because I live on an island and autonomy will not be a problem. having seen this, i think i bought the current car with better price/quality ratio. For an outfit that is not keen on EVs, Mazda have turned out one of the most desirable. I reckon they would make a good Electric Car company. A pity about the small range. But if they followed the PSA/Opel formula of using a 50KwHr battery the MX-30 would suit everyone. It being such a nice car most will want to go for a longer drive.

You nailed it. I love Mazda as well.... I have CX-5 and had two RX-7's in America. They are a great high quality company but do need to move ahead. With the MX-30 on a road drive, every 90 minutes of driving takes an additional 30 minutes of charging time at 40KWh. They should at least bump up the allowable KWh charge level. That is totally unacceptable.

Just put a deposit to get one in California in mid-October. I already have a home charger and never drive over 100 miles in a day. I plan on keeping it until it fails. I actually think the resale value will be terrible. The range is not a factor to me, but it will be to someone else, especially as the battery starts to degrade. They are smart to go with that size vehicle, as few people in the US drive smaller vehicles anymore. I think they were also smart to go with Panasonic for a high quality prismatic style battery instead of trying to go it alone. For most families, one small battery vehicle and one larger battery vehicle makes the most sense. This also makes more sense than having a 70kwh battery that you never fully use from a resource standpoint. Why carry around more battery weight.

The interior is by far better than the ID-4 from VW this looks premium to me although the range is shorter but for urban use its just the right car for me.

I cant help thinking that future residual values will be low on this MX30 as buyers still want RANGE , even if they only pop to the shops , and this range desire will only increase in the years ahead 😉 great review , what did Mrs T think of those doors ?

She loved the doors on the i3 so I think she'd really like this too actually. In fact, we wanted the 3+1 variant of the Fiat 500e so it's a damn shame they're not sending any to the UK.

Great review, I don’t think everyone needs a massive range - and its got a decent boot for a “second car”. I have just entered the EV world with a mini - loving it so far, great handling and small battery keeps the weight down - plenty of range for 99% of my trips -we have an old diesel estate for holidays at the moment - and even with a bigger battery the mini or MX30 would be too small as an only car

I would love to review the 4+. With the lack of government grant, it's not quite as great value for money as it was but it's still brilliant relative to other EVs of the same price. I am hoping they reduce the cost when EV6 comes out.

issue is most may drive less than 30 mile a day but alot of people go on a uk holiday atleast 1 time a year, like i do to the lakedistrict and it would mean me stopping hallf way or 3/4 way before the car dies

Now if Mazda had put the same battery in an MX5 and a little more powerful motor nobody would be bothered. We never drove more than a 100 miles in ours, and usually far less, the MX5 isn't a car to drive longer distance really. Putting that drive train in a 2021 MX30 is just so disapointing especially for so much money.

The CX30 was the car I had my eye on before going electric. The MX30 is, very clearly, based on that and has much the same looks, interior specs (I think) and so on. The CX30, with its "Skyactive" petrol engine is claiming 55 mpg with a 51 litre tank (around 11 gallons) so, a quick bit of math suggests their petrol offering in the same body has a range of about 600 miles. So, question, why havent they "right sized" the petrol version? It is fair enough to say "Most people only do 30 odd miles a day". Indeed, most days when I was at work I did around 30 miles (15 there and back). Except every so often I'd be asked to visit another location - anything up to 60 miles away. That would present a potential problem (ie charging it, and as you say, not particularly fast) which the petrol version wouldnt have. Nor, indeed, does my current EV. My conclusion is that this isnt really the EV they wanted to have and are trying to come up with a spiel to save the day. Looks nice though.

I'm quite late to the party, but I have some experience with the MX-30. Hopefully I can contribute! Right away I can tell you: the rear seats are not great for child seats, at least rear facing ones (which should be used for as long as possible mind you!). To place a child in the seat, you have to bend in ways a man never should. The easiest solution is therefore to enter through the door on the opposite side. Very impractical! My mum has the car, and I have put my daughter in her seat quite a few times. Not great. But I love the interior and how it drives. Excellent materials, and the HUD is really good too. Not one of those cheap looking plastic screens that pop up, but actually projected onto the windscreen. If you don't need more range and would like a car that is really comfortable with reasonable space and YOU DON'T HAVE KIDS, the MX-30 is, in my opinion, THE choice.

Does look very drab from inside the rear seats. I appreciate they are for kids, but still doesn't look like the best place. For a school runner it's probably perfect, especially over a Range Rover sport or Land Rover Defender.

Nice looking but the range is awful. My Nero 4+ although not as nice looking does double the range of the Mazda. Take 10% of the bottom and 20% of the top and your left with about 86 miles between charges on a run. Yesterday in my Nero I drove to Windsor castle and back was left with 48% after 150 miles.

I miss this car a lot... had it for almost 3 years. Charging speed was abysmal (never more than 34kw) and the reason I switched to Model Y, which still manages 34kW while at 95% SoC! Too bad Mazda decided to screw it up so badly, I would've kept this car forever if it was able to do 100kW.

Good clear review. For me three clear strikes, and its out. -Range. I've found having 250+ miles range is liberating. Longer range also better if you cant charge at home. There's no way I'll get any future EV with less than 250. -Suicide doors. Very inconvenient with passengers. There doesn't look to be much rear leg room either -No touch screen. I hate the BMW UI this looks the same principle. Add on top a fake engine noise, and cork! is that going to last? Now if they did a Rex, with 100 miles electric range i can see the use-case, like a Ampera on steroids. But they are too late now. After 2030 this is dead in the water if it has an engine. Its all well and good having this as a second lower range car for local driving but then get a s/h Leaf, Zoe, Soul, whatever. New, I'd take a Zoe over this any day. p.s. Its time reviewers stop talking about how long it takes to charge from 20%-80% (or similar) Use a comparison measure that works fairly, for example how long to add 100 miles. For example 20-80% in this is what, 60 miles? In a Niro, 150 miles.

For the money it doesnt match up well against rivals with much better mileage. Zoe or Corsa, same size same price, double the range. If i wanted a city car id get a Microlino or an AMi, Half the price and sufficient range for a city..

Interesting but would have been even more so to get your comparisons with the e-Niro, having spent 2 yrs with that car. Certainly wouldn’t swap mine for the Mazda which has less space, less range and is slower....without the silly artificial ICE noise. On the other hand the more EV models on the market the better.

I only had a couple of hours with the car so couldn’t do a proper comparison with the e-Niro unfortunately. Also they’re two very different cars for different needs. I prefer the comfort and feel of the interior of the Mazda and would even say it drives better but e-Niro wins in pretty much every other respect. Mazda makes much more sense as a second car. I think people who get one with that in mind will actually be very happy with it.

@@MrEV Thanks Andrew. It seems there is a sort of ‘league table’ of EVs is beginning to form. Tesla currently heading the table with superior efficiency and performance, not to mention the capacity to actually make and deliver the cars. Hyundai/Kia and VW group are challenging with clean sheet designs on purpose built platforms and seem to want to sell in volume, though I think the former have an advantage with the 800v system and IMO better looking and more innovative designs. Stellantis Group have some interesting products but their EVs are compromised adaptations of ICE designs, apart from the Fiat 500e which looks like a winner. Honda are just playing at it, as are Mazda..What you say about car journalists loving the Honda, yes indeed...have you ever seen one on the road!? These products are designed not to sell, both Honda and Mazda being highly invested in the engineering excellence of their fossil burners...soon to be a pointless game.

So I never considered the fuel tank size or range when buying an ICE car..Now it is right up there just after price. In between the low milage daily commutes and the high milage occasional road trips , there are the very common mid range weekend trips., Trips to the coast, theme parks etc..All just on the limit of this cars round trip range so charging required at destination.. There in lies the problem. Low range EVs need a large and reliable charging network as there is no room for plan b when travelling away from home.

Love Mazda, and would love to stay loyal given the fantastic experience I've had with the 6 and CX-5. But I cannot buy another ICE based new car and this electric option just isn't practical for me. Real shame.

Not impressed, I like a physical knob you can alter the cabin heat with, not a multi-function touch thing you have to look away from the road to fiddle with, so you can see you altering the correct function in the required direction. I don't like the landscape sat-nav either. Portrait makes more sense, as you can see what is coming next! The roads to either side are of no significance. I don't understand why the 'gear-shift' works backwards, push forwards to go backward, pull back to go forwards - counter-intuitive. It's probably ok for an expensive shopping trolley, but that's about it.

the range is a design choice, but the efficiency worries me more. How so low? Suspect they've not done anything on the aerodynamics side (e.g. the wheels etc), but quite apart from that 3.8 miles/kWh for a "small" car is poor.

The ground clearance is 13.6cm?? Everywhere else the stats say it's 180mm, including the Mazda website itself. I've been driving a Toyota Prius for 14 years and it's only 142mm, so this kinda matters to me... I've hit the road especially at the front so many times.

Range, range, range. As an EV Driver you should know better. Assuming you can charge at home, and your typical DAILY use is under a 100 miles per day (like most of us) why obsess about modest range? Having a smaller battery, saves money & weight, but also means you can charge it to FULL quickly. And there are lots of places you can recharge, many of which are free to use. However those suicide doors, like BMW i3 are an issue. So if I needed an SUV (heaven forbid) I would opt for MG

Totally useless in SoCal, I can't even drive it to LA from OC and back. With cold weather, running AC, acceleration and some hill climbs, your realistic range is more like 90 to 100 miles at the most. However if you run into a "what if" situation like hurricane, earthquake, wild fire or anything needs immediately get away and evacuation, this car won't get you too far. I wouldn't buy it as my only car. Great for cities and certain suburbs thou, it's like a scooter of car.

It is certainly the first time that in a review of a Mazda one hears the word Honda so often. Is it a call of the subconscious? When will we get your take on the Honda e then ? There is much to be said about the "philosophical" choice of range and battery size [if it is sufficient for most users, isn't a car with a small battery more environmental? etc]. There is even more to be said about Japanese carmakers (Nissan excepted) being "too late to the EV party". For the sake of argument, lets play the devils advocate and consider Toyota who say something like "We know hybrids, so we do hybrids, and when full electric is mature, safe and reliable enough, we will produce the most reliable options on the market [look at the proof of concept that is the electrified Lexus UX 300e offering a 10 year/1 000 000 km battery warranty]. Furthermore, we consider that we do much more global electrification than any other carmaker, because in environmental terms, selling 100 hybrid cars is more rational then selling one full electric car." Truth be told [and lets put "THE future" aside for a moment], what would you prefer right now for your lungs, and the lungs of your daughter : to live in a city with 100 hybrid cars, or to live in a city with 99 diesel and one full electric car? But enough rhetoric, let's hear more about the Honda e :-)

There is quite a lot to like about the styling inside I do like the cabin. But but but.....no chance I would go for this. 10 seconds to 60mph is terrible for any EV. Sounds very sluggish. And that range - I know that most people don't do large mileage every day, but that is different from feeling that you simply can't. Well not without hassle that would quickly get old. The range is less than that of my bladder. It just isn't viable for me to leave Yorkshire and know I probably cant get as far as Milton Keynes without stopping to charge. No one would buy a petrol car with that kind of limitation. If they did a version with a proper range and a bit more oomph then it could be a contender. But this just feels like a compliance car.

You seem to be accepting that Mazda are right when they say 'residuals will be better than other EV's'. You would have to question why they are claiming this and what evidence they have. I don't see any reason for the residuals to be any better than any other EV. Of course only time will tell.

You're right to be skeptical! It's based on a prediction from industry experts, CAP apparently. The EV market moves quickly though and it will have significant competition by then. Who knows!

Nope! That pathetic fake engine noise aping a fossil fuel engine is so sad....they could have spent that engineering budget on a bigger battery!....it feels like the last gasp of a dying beast ...Mazda hasn't realised we are all rapidly moving on to proper battery cars with better range, faster charging and a silent , smooth driving experience. Mazda is well behind the curve on this one. After driving a Hyundai Kona over the last 15 months, the Mazda is definitely a car that won't be even considered when it's time to move on.Also the energy efficiency!I know it's a press car but the Kona has averaged 4.9miles/Kwh over 10,000 miles and I got over 5 miles/kwh on a 120 mile round trip over the bank holiday whilst still doing the speed limit and having a great drive through the twisties on the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains roads.

That’s all fine a dandy and Tesla has a 400 mile ranges blah blah .. but if you’re in a country road in Australia say 400 miles out of a major city, say Sydney and you need to charge it and there are no charge points ... ok so the car can charge itself and then sooner or later the battery finally dies ... how do you dispose of it ?...

Using Australia as an example, there's more solar power potential there than most other countries in the world. Sadly the government is in bed with the coal industry so electricity there is going to be dirty for a good while yet. Old car batteries have a second life as static energy storage.

The cost of making solar charging points in a continent that is roughly the same size as the USA would be unimaginable ... and impossible. Like i said, until someone comes up with a realistic practical solution, EV's are a stop gap hype.

@@joepowell7025 Solar and wind is the cheapest form of energy there is. You don't have to make "solar charging points", you just need to clean the grid with renewable energy and provide plugs for cars. You have electricity everywhere in Australia; it's really not a big deal.

I wish I had more time to test as I did have a child seat I could have used, but it was all a bit rushed. I would have thought the wide aperture you get with the suicide doors would have made it easier to put a seat in though? Just impossible if you're parked next to another car... or anything else for that matter! 😀
