There’s an extender version of the MX-30 coming this year - it is powered by a 17.5 kWh battery and an electric motor. That small battery can be charged by the 0.8 litre Wankel Rotary “Extender” Engine (Euro 6 spec no doubt) - and the Rotary engine DOES NOT power the wheels (or drivetrain directly). It works exclusively as a generator - charging the battery - which in turn sends its electrical power to the electric motors which DO power the wheels. I’d go for the Mazda MX-30 as I can totally live with the 35.5kWh battery at my 60+ age (with retirement looming). I presently do a 34 mile round trip commute daily - this car is perfect for me. I’d take a train to Scotland. Or a plane. I’m not doing up to 100 miles driving anywhere in one day anymore. The MX-30 was designed for the likes of me! It certainly has presence on the road and a premium interior loaded with every standard and extra technology option you might want. No self driving - that’s fine - I don’t trust that technology yet - and I don’t want a Tesla clone.
@johnknight91504 жыл бұрын
Of this three, I'd take the Fiat - it's the only one I consider desirable. The Mini's fine but it's no longer cool, nor interesting, nor particularly stylish nowadays. It's a pop song that's been over-played. With those doors and rear seats, the Mazda isn't actually practical, and what is the point of the car? These "compact SUVs" wind me up: it's an off-roader that doesn't go off-road; it's big but not really; it's small but not really; it's fuel efficient but not really. And how dull would you be to find it desirable? Just pick a thing and be good at it! I'm not sure about prices, but if I were going for the practical argument I'd much rather have either that new MG estate car (which is probably more than 25,000), or one of the excellent looking hatchbacks from VW, Skoda, or Renault. And if those are cheaper than this range, then for argument's sake, I'd just spec one up to 25K! ;-)

Hi John, you make some great points and we agree and disagree with you depending if it's me, Nicki or Tom who's reading them! We also have a lot of love for the MG5, it's hard to fault as a great value for money, practical car isn't it. Thanks for your support, Ginny
@tomwookieford84454 жыл бұрын
Mx-30 not really an off-roader and it’s not much bigger than a Golf. Just taller. Weird that people like SUVs more though - usually put down to people liking a ‘command’ driving position. I don’t get having a back door if you have to put the seats forward to use ‘em though. Plus, that range in winter is going to be sketchy!

@@tomwookieford8445 I can't say it's a form factor I understand. It would make more sense to go another step in either direction, say a 5-door hatchback one way, or something like a Hyundai Kona going the other.
@AlfaRomeoQ3 жыл бұрын
"compact SUV" nowadays is a synonym for "Jacked up hatchback". Back in the 90s, if you said "compact SUV", I'd think that you were talking about about the 3 door Chevy Blazer or something like that. I'd pick the 500e as well. Also, Fiat will probably launch their 500XL fairly soon, so that could be an interesting "compact SUV" (I just know they'll call it that or a "crossover") compared to stuff like the Model Y (way too expensive, makes sense in the US with the supercharger network) and the MX-30 (kind of a missed opportunity if you ask me).

I love mini's and have one but have to agree with you. The current generation is kinda boring, they have gotten bigger, look a bit long from the side and gotten more BMW inside. Feel like they have lost there way, there quirkiness which in turn means no cool factor anymore. My next car won't be a mini and out of these I would pick the Fiat 500 for sure.
@mikedignum18683 жыл бұрын
Even in real-world range the Fiat 500e is impressive and beats the others. For a first-time e-car, i would look at the Fiat.
@AlfaRomeoQ3 жыл бұрын
Also Fiat is probably going to release the new 500XL next year. If that thing comes out with 400km of range or more, that could be a big hit for them, especially if they don't cock up the design too much like they did with the original 500L.

Fast charging also isn’t…….. unless your at less than 20% capacity. Apart from the range though, it’s a great car and a really nice place to be. A 200 mile range mx30 would be perfect

I don't get the MX-30. It has the platform of the CX-30 but for whatever reason they decided to make the boot supermini sized and make the rear seats practically unusable, when they could've just as easily made a practical Kona electric rival.

We love mazda's, we have a cx30, if Mazda had made a ev version of the cx30 with a 200 mile they would have a great car, (they used the cx30 as a test mule,) but with the MX30 they have a Donkey.. i've test driven it, the rear doors are a joke, try to get out when parked next to a another car in a car park, no chance. no rear leg room and the range is very poor. some nice touches inside , but the ac screen goes against all what Mazdas say about using a touch screen whilst driving..

So if range was unimportant then I'd take the Mazda. However, in our single car family, where both of us use the car to commute daily and travel 150-160 miles a week minimum, no charging opportunity at home or work, at this time of year (winter) I don't think any of these three would work for us! The Mazda is LITERALLY the least they could do. The least effort, the least interest, the least range. It is the poster boy for compliance motoring - made because they had to not because they wanted to. Which could be said about the 500 too, to be fair, but there's little doubt that Fiat did an incredible job and actually TRIED to make it the best they could. Which is why it would be my pick. If I was on the filming with you and offered any of the 3 for a few days, to get back home to the NW I would be charging at 100 mile intervals as bit wintery now. Mini seems most comfortable to plan a route using 50kw Instavolt charging. If you'd tested cheapest 500e would have taken that. Small battery means very quick charge 20-80% but might fit in with a quick lunch. And £5k in my pocket.

Instead looking at the percentage, we should focus on how much range you can get in certain amount of time. 42 kWh battery can be charged at 85 kW, compared to 50 kW with smaller battery 500e. Also bigger battery has tendency degrading less in time.

Do not like SUVs and the MX30 range is rubbish in 2020. And its not just about range, speed of charge can be a factor, especially if you make the occasional longer journey. I've used a Zoe for 18 months and frequently go to Wiltshire and the London airports from Torquay. The 500 will make the trip to London so much quicker than the other two, because of the range and the faster charging. And while the 500 is the smallest you did forget to mention the 3+1 door option on the hatch version, giving you the suicide rear door of the MX30 and Mini Clubman. Handy if you have young children in booster seats or for putting big items in the back. 11kW AC is very useful on the 500 too. And could get you moving again quickly if the DC chargers are in use.

@@davemyers77 Having commuted 55-60 miles in an EV. I would say it is marginal. All EVs have that initial launch and always having max power at the ready that gets you off the lights quicker, lets you be first to any gap in the traffic. The size of the Mini and 500 are an advantage. Unless your route is all dual carriageway or motorway, the extra power of the Mini will not be that great over the other 2. The Zoe was 110ps and I used to just pick an empty lane at roundabouts, traffic lights and always got to 40mph first. You can't drive to work like its a touring car race, but that initial burst of torque gets you in front every time. Like any choice of car, its all down to what will suit the individual and their *specific needs. *when people actually make a sensible choice 😁 I can see the Mini being the most fun for sure

It’s mixed reactions here, people are apprehensive but resigned to it I think. We have subsidies of £3,000 on a new electric car, it will be interesting to see if this stays. Thanks again! Ginny

These ae funny and fun to watch. I trust these reviews apply to US models. I have always heard the Fiat 500e has a terrible reliability rating.

Honda PR wouldn't give Tom the E. Why else would he turn up in a crossover when comparing small electric cars? Don't understand why the Mini needs ugly wheels and splashes of yellow just because it's electric.

Big bloke needs Big Car, Skinny female (Nicki) can suffice in a Smaller car and Ginny (yes your right Tom she can be a Bossy so-in-so) but she has a point as she is older so therefore brings home the older generation that could be forced into an electric cars and that includes me.

Mazda looks like the rear seats were put in as an after thought. Long bonnet/hood at the expense of rear passenger room = poor design.

I agree Cliff (it's Ginny here), Tom (not surprisingly) doesn't! Thanks for your support.

Apparently the Mazda is also available with a fuel powertrain,so not designed as a pure EV with the packaging improvements that could allow.

How can someone really praise the look of the Mini, or only take it seriously? It seems like it had a bad lip surgery.

Thank goddess I have watched a lot of reviews on each of these cars. These people provided zero information about them. Such has interior quality being very poor on the fiat and high end on the Mazda. What about driving experience? All we got was a short one liner about the mini. I was so happy to see these 3 cars go head to head but was very let down on content

The mini hasn't been "cute" since the original mini was discontinued. The new "mini" isn't even mini in size. The look of a bruised upper lip isn't cute.

Got level 2 in racing green on order. It does take a lot of thinking 🤔 about the various pros and cons. The HYUNDAI KONA came a close second because of its massive range, but I couldn't see myself in such an ugly vehicle for the next few years. And it just wasn't as much FUN to drive. The mini is a giggle and faster than my current Seat Leon FR DSG 2.0Tdi. I'm getting a charging point installed at home and for the 2 or 3 occasions during the year I go over range I'll plan the journey and relax ...and think of all the extra pandas 🐼 🙄 that will be born. Can't wait 😁😁😁😉

How the doors on that Mazda got passed as safe is beyond me . Lets say you have an unfortunate crash , the driver has been rendered unconscious . The rear passengers are perfectly capable of walking if only they could open the stupid door .

The Mazda is weird and the interior is dark and cramped. Mini with ease.

I imagine a Tesla fan looking this video. This is probably their worst nightmare. They say: "What is this?????". And not just ones, but 3x.

£25k, way to expensive. EV should remain at less than 15k Euros, after all it just to go from A to B …big deal! Cars in general are not an investment. When people will start understanding that? Did I say “simpler is best”?

whats with the colour balance of the start? the women look jaundiced, and that post box looks really washed out. I assume its that rather than bad make up as Tom (wheres the hair) suddenly develops jaundice when he appears in that scene too.
