Thanks Tisch. In SCUBA diving I learned that as you go deeper ROYGBV-RED, ORANGE,YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE AND LASTLY VIOLET are the colors as you go deeper your world takes on or loses in that sequence. (So do not wear a watch with red hands). Atmosphere is primarily water-humidity so of course the same is true. I wonder how it appears on planets with no atmosphere? I do mostly portraits but the same principles apply.

That's a really interesting point, I've noticed this too! I've done a bit of spearfishing, as you bring some fish to the surface, their colours get even brighter!

I remember as a newbie suba diver, I thought my little flashlite batteries were dying - the light always had a reddish glow! Plus when you do a night dive OMG the colors!

I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon your wonderful videos Andrew! I spent an amazing six months in the Bay of Islands some years back my boat, anchored in Russell, and every night after my nightly dinner of freshly caught snapper, I would dig out my sketch book, pastels, pencils etc and spend hours drawing boats from photos I had found...New Zealand is very inspiring and beautiful.. And here I am learning oil painting from a true master!! ... I discovered something interesting to paint on recently, I would love to hear your opinion... Using Masonite (some call it Hardboard) I will take an orbital sander with aggressive sandpaper and sand that back, rough side until there is but just a trace of the pattern left... I will smooth by hand, down to 220 grit and then gesso finishing it with a light sanding when its dry. What remains is a fine pattern not unlike canvas and I paint over that... I also do mainly oval shapes, love the gentle curves ...I paint beach and sea scenes for the tourist trade here in Hawaii where I now live. I LOVE your sea tutorials, again so happy to have found your wealth of videos and wonderful lessons!! :)

Andrew, this is great advice. I never consciously consider these things, even though I get it right at times, it helps when you break down the reasoning of why things do or won't create depth, especially helpful for improvised art

I find that habits are hard to break. But with each attempt of another painting, I strive to break a bad habit. My biggest problem at the moment is toning down the colors in the distance, to achieve that far away look. I do thank you for what you post on here, because it allows me to dare challenge myself to do more landscapes. I’m more of a “people need to be in my art” kind of person, so this is a different route for me to take.

Absolutely lovely painting. I think at first listen, these dos and don'ts can sound a bit simplistic, but I really quite appreciate that even then, they are still the things that are easiest to forget about. *Obviously* we should think about base drawing + perspective, tones, and colours, yet somehow they are also the things most people mess up and only realise when it is too late to easily adjust. :)

Wow, that's an amazing landscape Andrew! You are such an awesome and gifted artist. Thank you for sharing your tips! I'm both an oil painter and recently also have done gouache. I'm representational, but not as realistic as you are (maybe I'm not capable of it!). Sometimes it is challenging to get the right balance between a representational/moody and slightly abstracted feeling with a super loose style but have it read accurately at the same time. Do you know what I mean? I love John Singer Sargent but I also love Turner.... both were such a masters of conveying a scene with only a few perfectly placed strokes, and Turner's atmospheric effects were other-worldly! Thanks for the great video.

I'm curious to learn more about your safety practices for cleaning/storing brushes, as well as your method for waste disposal? Painting mountainous scenes is a cheat code. I don't blame you. I live in a flat part of the US. I like the flat farm compositions. How do I create a strong sense of depth and composition when I don't have the diagonals of mountains to create movement.

I have tried to paint but instead of being a relaxing activity I find myself incredibly stressed and unable to mix the colors I want to. Everything ends up being a few colors without shading, lighting, or detail which just makes the problem worse. I have lost all my desire to paint, one of my problems I might have as well is that I am currently using acrylic and have had a few people tell me that the style I paint is better suited for oil. I am hopeful but I don't have any desire to paint currently

Hi, Andrew. I like a lot of your art, but sometimes, i dont like. Let me explain. When I see the result, I really now that is a great composition, colors, perspective... but when I see your paint in a close up, the texture apears, I dont like it, because in my work, I strugle against brush marks. Your texture remembers me the artis Arthur Nisio, a great artist, by the way. But I still learnir and re-learnirg a lot of your videos. Thank you and God bless you.
