I am painting a fan art painting of Queen Amidala from The Phantom Menace. I'm using the method of drawing on the canvas directly and then spraying the canvas with a sealant and then paint over the drawing. This is something I learned from Cesar Santos.

This is one of your best paintings, it is so YOU! It is your style, your eye for beauty and appreciation of the subject, your exquisite use of color and light, etc... Andrew, YOU are a modern master, so many of us agree with that fact. I want to learn to paint in the painterly realistic way that you do, not the old masters. Every thing you produce is breathtaking. I feel so fortunate to have found you and so thankful that you are sharing your gift with us. You are a diamond! : )

A really valuable message thank you Andrew. My tiny studio is my happy place, and right now I am painting flowers in acrylics, in my own style. Revamping and finishing a painting I began 7 years ago. 9 years ago, my brother died - he was my painting buddy and a superb, visionary artist with flowers, both realism and abstract. I miss him sorely, and have learned much from his paintings, but I still have my own style. Your Video has come at a special time for me and helped hugely. Today is the 9th anniversary of my Mum's death as well (my brother died in December 9 yrs ago) My Mum was also an excellent water color artist and loved critiquing my work. Thank you for continuing to share your experience and thoughts with us. Note, that I also do seascapes and landscapes - photo realistic.

The finished work is simply beautiful; I'm so glad you didn't give up on it....I cannot tell you how much I needed this video and these reminders. I think your thoughts on this are absolutely key to being authentic as an artist and to have that joy, but it's so easy to get caught up in extraneous "stuff," and that does finally suck the happiness out of the process. I sincerely thank you, Andrew.

This painting turned out really great - especially after your changes. The play of light and shadow makes it beautiful. In my opinion you achieve this mostly with the details like single blades of grass while the old masters you are referring to might be doing this on a bigger scale.

I am so grateful that I am living here now, in this present moment in space/ time to see the great painter Andrew Tischler. The Old masters may not consider them self masters in their living time. That is the mark of a master. Watching you painting, all your studies and your afford is so inspiring. Master or no master, who cares. It is just name convention of humanity. The point is if this makes you a better human been. That is the key. Thank you will never be enough.

I am reminded of my art teacher’s message to me: “detail adds interest!” For me, the best successes are when your vision can match your application. That is the ghost I’ve always chased. And there is, sometimes your vision does evolve within the composition. It is all about the journey. It can take you to new and exciting places. Another lesson from my teacher, “Paint what you see.” That in itself can be the hardest lesson.

You're quickly becoming one of my biggest inspirations! You hit on something that I've been struggling with lately and also sort of a realization I'm coming to grips with, as I've been trying to make my work more loose and "painterly". While it's great to grow and seek out new ways of learning its also ok to accept that I like to do detailed paintings. I too like small brushes and details and while I might really love the loose brush strokes other artists create, I can also accept the fact that I have my own style and don't need to shy away from my strengths. I'm eager to create a large scale piece! Thanks for sharing all your insight and keeping me inspired to push paint around!

I loved this post. As great as it is being you, it took trying to be someone else to recognize and appreciate who you are. Since we are born, imitation has been a part of the process of learning who we want to be. I still try to copy some of my favorite paintings just so that I can learn what I like about them and if creating them is as much fun as looking at them. I crash and burn on some and have a happy ending on others but I wouldn’t take back the time I spent on any of them because there were as much to learn from the failures as there was from successes. Keep inspiring artists with these great posts.
