nice videos , they really helped me, thank you ! i have a question , now i woulod like to paint my surfboard over the hot coat , i'm using “kick ultra epoxy resin” + additive f , by resin reserch . i know that some resins have issue with some acrylics color or colors with solventes. does anyone know what kind of color can i use to paint my board? should i use water based colors ?

Thanks, glad it's helped, if you check out my XPS build videos, I did a red paint job on top of the hotcoat. I used exterior acrylic house paint that I got mixed from the hardware store. I let it dry and cure really well, lightly sand and washed down with lots of soap and water before coating that with epoxy. It's tricky as there is always the potential for fish eyes but I've did this many times with great results. Also you can use just about any acrylic paints but again you have to let it cure. Oil based paints or even spray paints can "dissolve" from the epoxy solvents, my best tip is do a test with any paints before you commit to the actual board. Good luck!

@@ciusky3309 If you have access to a spray gun or airbrush setup, then you can spray acrylic which would likely work better than rattle can... If that is not an option and you need to spray, there are some rattle cans of water based acrylic (eg krylon h2o) though the majority are not. I have not used them for this. Definitely test first.

I can't believe you still make these videos! Keep it up man. I made two boards inspired and informed by your videos. Thanks!

Glad I'm not the only one not doing the water fall method with epoxy. Every time I hear lots of drips hitting the floor it feels like money being wasted, that could be put toward repairs and making fins.

It sounds like loonies (our 1 dollar coin) hitting the floor with each drip lol.

@@AndrewWorkshop worst part is the exchange rate right now makes the drips hurt a lot more lol (I also use loonies)

I'm also building a 9'8" longboard, and am trying to decide the glassing schedule. If I was just using E glass, do you think double-6oz on top with a single 6oz on the bottom is enough, or should I go heavier? I want something relatively durable but am also trying to limit the weight. Also thanks for posting this series along with all your other surfboard building content. This is super helpful :)

So will the resin remain thin if you let it cool to room temp? Won't heated resin will accelerate kicking. Sounds like you've got a nice tight layup! Very nice job!
@AndrewWorkshop
@AndrewWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes heated resin will accelerate kicking but it was cool weather when I did this so it wasn't too much of an issue as by the time I started mixing, the resin was almost room temp. Epoxy resin flows well at room temp, so it will be a bit thicker than when it was heated but not thick like when it started crystallizing.

Andrew..thanks for all the great instrtuction. Question: Do you sell the boards you make? Are they costom orders? Or just for fun

@@arthursault7355 Thanks for checking out my videos. I just build for fun, made some custom boards for friends but that's about it. Not enough hours in a day 😃.

I hate glassing! I love shaping. Sanding is just tedious but I can handle it. But glassing is the least fav for me. I shaped an egg PU today and if it wasn't because I ordered the glassing materials, I would have pay to get it glass.

Im using the offcuts as patches over the finboxes (fcs) as that was I can save on fibreglass. I feel like thats a better use of the fibreglass offcuts rather than just using them as rags. Unless its a heap stronger?

How much resin do you estimate to use on this board?

I'll try to make summery video of all the technical aspects of the materials but here is what I have looking over my notes: Total Mixed Resin for 6oz bottom, 9'8" board: 725 grams (25 ounces)

Can i make a request? Remove the music and just leave the working/sanding/talking sounds? I legitimately use your videos to fall asleep and the working with foam sounds/shaping/sanding and talking sounds really help me sleep. Sounds massively weird but it relaxes me as I have really bad sleeping/relaxing problems.. its the only thing that helps! :)
