Good comrade. Thanks for the positive. Please give me a link to buy fin and fin box

I'm using your videos to shape my first board and I have a question about when you install the fin boxes. I've seen a few shapers install the box after the board is glassed. Is there a reason for that?

I need one of those but green light doesn’t sell them anymore

Hi, thanks for this series, it's been a huge help. I don't get using pollyfilla though. Isn't it for spackling drywall? Doesn't that mess up the foam and resin?

I am about to shape my own board and I want to rout out my own fin boxes and everything but I don’t want to pay for the expensive kit so I was wondering if I could get a tutorial for how you made those wood templates for the futures fin boxes.

I'm going to trace the boxes from a same sized board, that I like, onto paper then onto a solid board and router out the board.

Every time I see one I like I'll do the same and write the board dimensions on the fin box template and save it.

Great video, thanks for continuing to make content. Quick question - how do you deal with fin installation with a lot of tail rocker, or vee/concave?
@AndrewWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Good question, I haven't done too much with over amounts of concave or vee but I would probably lay out the fins and shape a concave around them (for a double concave). A single concave I would just install as normal. For Futures the fin cant is built into the fins, so to account for that maybe get fins with less or more depending on how angled the finbox is in the pocket of the concave. If you are installing a fin box with lots of tail rocker like the bahne box, that you just installed and grind off the excess flush to the board (later video). I guess the best thing to do is go look at some boards at the surfshop and see what the pros do too. I haven't done much with FCS fins but I believe the cant is built into the boxes, at least they are for the plugs which are the older style, not sure about the newer version of their system.

I've done a few boards with putting the boxes in line with channels. I always level the tail of the board then level my router jig with wedges to the board so my future fin boxes stay at zero can't. Then just router the boxes so that the none of the box is above the foam. With channels usually one side is 1/8" or more below the foam, so ill build up that side with extra glass when glassing to fill the extra space. Then sand it all smooth when I grind open the boxes. I'm not a pro but its worked well so far for me using futures. The down side to fin systems is you need to think about how the box size/shape will glass into the contours before you start shaping. I'm interested to see about the Bahne box Andrew mentioned, being able to grind down part of the box could be a good way to go.

I just finished shaping my board( it's a 9'0") with a big single concave 1/2" deep in the middle from the nose to just past the fulcrum and from there a very subtle double concave that's only a 1/8" deep that each lead to the side bites. I measured beforehand where those would be and made sure it that foam was level at the side bite placement. The double concave is barely noticeable, maybe even less than an 1/8", after glassing probably won't even be noticeable. I'm basically copying a board I loved and the "V" started just behind the side bites. It's a longboard so they're quite forward, like the back of the fin box is 16 or so inches from the back. So like the board I'm copying the V starts after that and doesn't affect the side bites or the center fin for that matter as it's on the stringer.

Hey Andrew! Awesome stuff as usual, has the polly filler ever caused any issues with delamination? If you are doing a single colour tint could you just do this on the gloss coat perhaps?

I was wondering that also. I think there are different polyfilla mixes, but I wonder how they behave if they get wet (eg a ding). I painted the board I'm doing now (prior to glassing). It is XPS but had some minor irregularities to fill. I mixed very fine foam dust from my sander with acrylic paint to make a filler that is tinted and sandable. Not yet sure how it will work long term, but the finish is kind of "sandblasted" so the epoxy should grip well.

And the inclination of the side fins? Does the fin box itself take care of that?
