How to Make a Surfboard - Single Fin Box, Leash and Vent Plugs Part 08

This is the second last video for the longboard build, in this video I quickly power sand the longboard glosscoat and then install a center fin box and install the leash and vent plugs. In the previous video I sanded, applied a pin stripe and glosscoated the surfboard, see below for the playlist for the other videos in this build series.

Hi Andrew! Exceptional, impressive quality of work on hot and gloss coats! You did not tell though how the deck gloss coat is. Is it better then bottom one? I think, installation of vent, leash plug and, especially fin box after lamination, and even after hot/gloss coat is a mistake. Vent is ok. But the leash plug and fin box must have constructional strength and sound integrity with the whole laminate. The layer of resin cannot do it. At least, the leash plug and the fin box should be covered with patches of a layer or two of fiberglass, that will take tensions and stresses. Also, having that high density foam, I would install the vent somewhere in the middle.

Great video. Thank you. Your breather hole looks like it is blocked by the stringer. You may want to drill about 3/8" deeper into the stringer out so the air in the foam can get to the hole.

It's big enough that the air can escape from both sides :)

Hi Andrew! Thanks for these videos - I used this set for my very first board! Just half way through my second, coming up to doing my fin box... you don't glass in yours - is there a reason why? I would have thought for a cleaner finish and extra strength , a glass in would be best Cheers on any thoughts! Jeremy

Why didn't you install the singe fin box before the first lamination (at the same stage that you installed the other 2 fin boxes)?

Bahne boxes are installed after the hotcoat. In this case after the gloss coat.

Use a 10.5 inch box. It gives a little bit more adjustability than using an 8.5 inch box.

Andrew, you’ve inspired me. I’m pretty handy, built airplane hangars and halfpipes and balsa wood models. I kayak fish in NorCal, but want to build a long (13’6”) light sup with a v shaped bow (to cut swell and eliminate slap) for ocean fishing. It needs to be reasonably tough, but sub 40lbs so I can launch from tough-to-reach spots. The deck will have a recessed standing area and a ridge around it and a spot for a cooler. Maybe an internal rod storage area for rough landings. I’ve considered foam, plywood ribs, even laser cut cardboard. How would you build it? Any advice appreciated. Is the foam 2lbs per square foot? Or, 2lbs per cubic foot? The latter makes intuitive sense ... unless I’m missing something. Also, why put one of the vent plugs in the tail since it will be underwater most of the time?

Water would never get in. It's made out of goretex. Air/gas comes out, water does not go in.
