I'm hitting the road soon. I picked up a cheap van and am going to live in it for a while and travel the country. Taking my raspberry pi 4 with me and my laptop. My laptop was a $400 US laptop in 2020, it's a ryzen 5 3500u, it's actually pretty powerful compared to some of the celeron laptops around but the screen sucks. I'm bringing an external monitor to use with the pi and the laptop. Also bringing my mini travel keyboard so I can compose music on the go! Hope no one thieves it! Going to eventually have 12v power in it and solar panels but can't afford it just yet.

The fact that Android 15 is still so far behind in this functionality and still hides it behind Developer Options is ... depressing at this point. Killing the host display but not turning it off is hilarious. Google should just kill Chrome OS and focus on Android. Android does literally everything already, and does it well. The only thing missing from Android is more desktop-class software. Imagine how quickly that would be solved if every Android device with a video-capable USB port was able to run a complete desktop UI like DeX. Suddenly you'd have a massive install base. 9:40 DeX does not give you a full desktop browser. There's no such thing on Android, currently - they're all mobile browsers. The closest you can get is Kiwi Browser which can be used on any Android device.
@leepspvideo2 ай бұрын
I found out about Kiwi when I was editing this video, just haven’t tried it yet. Dex feels much more like a desktop browser compared to phones and tablets. It’s a shame given the power we now have. My iPad has an M2 processor and 16GB of ram but I can’t run full UTM with Linux on it. (Without jailbreak) It’s more than good enough on my M1 MacBook Air with 8GB ram How does this run so well with only 1GB of ram allocated? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpTHZXaKeL2ZgqM
@nickthaskater2 ай бұрын
@@leepspvideo DeX triggers the tablet layout for browsers (typically includes tabs across the top of the window) and, depending on the browser, the large viewport will trigger said browser to display pages in desktop view by default. I get the same experience outside of DeX on the inner display of my Galaxy Z Fold. Microsoft Edge does a great job dynamically adjusting between mobile and desktop UI and pages. It's my primary browser on my Z Fold for mobile use and for DeX. 100% - phones are more powerful now than laptops not that long ago. Dual/quad core laptops were commonplace within the last 5 years. Something like a Z Fold 6 will annihilate those laptops and there's no reason they shouldn't be better leveraged today. Relegating ultra powerful devices like this to social media scrolling and KZbin is a massive shame.

I don't know about killing Chrome OS, but I do agree that the flag ship hardware and Android can have desktop class software. I found a productivity suite from SoftMaker the Office NX Suite. You get the same exact thing on Android that I run on my Linux Beta on my Lenovo Chromebook. I put them side by side and it is the same thing, functions, menu, and UI, all of it. It mostly the developers not realizing Androids potential.

Whilst I could see what they were going for, it did leave a feeling of being a tad underwhelming when the flaws were quickly uncovered. Maybe if the promotion was that this was some form of Alpha/Beta release then the context would be clearer and the flaws would be instantly seen as more normal as a part of development. Hopefully the complete package will come, so here could be some expectant excitement. But the initial delivery, at least to my eyes and ears, left more of a dampened feeling of reality and not what I came thinking that I would see.

Android is clunky on large screens with mouse and keyboard control, and it's impossible to do proper computing on a touch screen OS anyway - that's why toddlers like touch screens for playing their Disney movies on tablets in the back of the parents' car on long journeys. Kudos to Konstakang for his hard work in putting this stuff together, especially AOSP-based stuff without Google's malware plastered all over it - but there's a reason why Windows 8 failed when it tried to be both a desktop and mobile OS. And whilst I don't like Apple or use their products, they have one OS for mobile (iOS) and one for desktops (OSX) for good reason too.

@@leepspvideo I stopped enjoying MS-DOS and Windows at XP - I skipped Windows ME and Vista and I always felt Windows 7 was a step down from XP but "just about bearable". I just don't think that one interface for desktop and mobile can ever work, and that was the main problem with Windows 8 - it failed at doing both. For the same reason, I wouldn't want to see Linux on a touch screen device either - I think Android and iOS do the job well enough on mobile devices, I just don't like mobile devices very much anyway. I can't bear the thought of spending my life peering at a 4 inch screen from a phone constantly demanding my attention. Running de-Googled Lineage OS on them makes them much quieter and nicer anyway - the battery life doubles too! I carry a small Thinkpad with me most of the time - if I need to "compute" I find a nearby coffee bar and get the Thinkpad out with a coffee. I only use phones or tablets for calls, texts, email and playing music or video downloaded to the device (not streamijng services).

@@terrydaktyllus1320 "I wouldn't want to see Linux on a touch screen device either" I'm sure you know this (you seem more than technical enough) but for the general audience: Android is built on Linux, so Linux is technically the most popular mobile OS kernel. That aside- I think GNU/Linux on mobile does still have some potential, but it would come at the cost of being a very different UI, as in almost all graphical software would want to be redesigned/rewritten (and non-graphical software would only "work" if a new graphical interface was designed). It's less sandboxed than Android, for better or worse as you see fit. RE: "I carry a small Thinkpad with me most of the time - if I need to "compute" I find a nearby coffee bar and get the Thinkpad out with a coffee. I only use phones or tablets for calls, texts, email and playing music or video downloaded to the device (not streaming services)." - I see you enjoy your netbook... I'm curious what are your thoughts on the idea of Chromebooks? I think they're a good middle ground between the not-everything-works-on-a-phone use case and the streaming media use case, but I have no idea if they even support offline file storage.
@terrydaktyllus13202 ай бұрын
@@zombie_pigdragon Thanks for an interesting reply. I consider Google Android and ChromeOS to be "surveillance" OSes filled with Google's spyware and I would not use either. If I buy a mobile device then it is often a used one because I don't want to spend much money on a device I don't really like to use anyway - but because I have no social media presence (apart from here) then I rely on phone calls, texts and emails to stay in touch with people. So every mobile device I do have must support LineageOS or another AOSP-based Android build.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 as someone who has used Samsung DeX as a daily PC for several years, Android is not "clunky on large screens with mouse and keyboard control." It's also absolutely not "impossible to do proper computing" on Android (whatever you mean by "proper"). If you want to use a "dumb" feature phone instead of a smartphone, you do you, but at least try to have a basic understanding of something if you're going to write paragraphs about it.

How do I install apps? I can't find any google play Store
@terrydaktyllus13202 ай бұрын
"AOSP" means "Android Open Source Project", which is the "clean" version of Android before Google installs all of its rubbish on there to turn it into a surveillance device for them to start owning you and all of your data. If you really want to sacrifice your privacy to Google then you need to find a compatible "gapps" ("Google Apps") package to install to put all their rubbish on it, that will include the awful Play Store. I can't help you any further because the only Android I run on any device is de-Googled and I consider gapps to be malware - but maybe have a look on Konstakang's site as he may have details on there about a compatible gapps package.

Actually the only working gapps for Android 15 are the LiteGapps. I’m on AOSP 15 by Konsta but the device id registration doesn’t work. If you open the device id info you’ll get the Device ID but not the GSF ID. You can register the device id (as i did) but Play Store still won’t work, even after days. I think we have to wait for a more complete gapps since Android 15 is still in beta.
