Compromise might be in order. Legends not in hall numbers can be worn but are retired to players who held that position. Example would be posadas number being retired for catchers. Maybe go so far as to only allow coaches to wear certain numbers or allowing coaches numbers to also be player worn at the same time. There are some fixes that still allow the honor of having the number retired.

I definitely prefer the European/soccer model for number retirement. Retiring numbers are usually just reserved for players who died tragically and is a very rare occurrence. Otherwise, inheriting a given number is a tradition. Wearing the #7 shirt at Man United or Brazil’s #10 shirt is an honor that shows the organization had trust and faith in the player. It provides an awesome lineage that carries through the generations.

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. It may seem a bit silly to discuss, but teams should really be thinking about what they’ll do when they retire too many numbers. Will they resort to triple-digits? Decimals (lol)? Some teams have gone a little crazy retiring numbers, when there are so many other ways to honor their legendary players. I think that retired numbers should be VERY restrained, dedicated to only the best of the best for their team. All of your locks for the Yankees are perfect. I also find it a bit comical that some teams have the same number retired multiple times (like the Yankees with the numbers 8 and 42)

This feels like a potential endpoint for any highly successful team in baseball, hockey, or basketball. If your team is highly successful, chances are you'll have a lot of retired numbers. And that'll eventually limit the ability for players to choose a number as options diminish further and further. This happening in baseball is most likely due to the fact baseball teams are far larger than the other two mentioned sports. However, it doesn't have to be this way. I actually like what the Dallas Cowboys do, where players are put in a ring of honor and their jersey number and name are displayed in the stadium. The number technically isn't retired, but the player is still honored. It feels like the best of both worlds as players who made a number iconic for their city are still honored, and future players aren't restricted by the past. The number 88 is a great example of this, the Cowboys have honored two players with the number 88: Michael Irvin and Drew Pearson. So both are in the ring of honor, and both have a banner with their number and name in the stadium. Even with that, Dez Bryant and CeeDee Lamb have worn 88, and it will almost certainly be worn again in the future (probably by a wide receiver because why not?) Again, I feel it's a best of both worlds solution. Though I wouldn't object to keeping 42 retired leaguewide considering the impact Jackie Robinson had on the game of baseball, and having just one retired number won't cause this issue of limiting future players' choice.

We only have three officially retired numbers, but a much longer list of numbers that are "out of circulation" and won't be given out unless absolutely necessary with preseason roster sizes. As a Yankees fan, I can imagine Sabathia getting his number retired at some point in the near future. He played long enough and was beloved by the team for the 10+ years he was there. Judge seems like the obvious one. Even if he doesn't win a World Series, he''ll get his number retired for having maybe the best 3-4 year stretch we've seem from a Yankees player in quite some time. I agree with you on Martin and O'Neill though. Loved Paul O'Neill, but retiring his number (and even Bernie's to some extent) felt like overkill. I saw this video pop up and couldn’t watch right away but it got my interest and I looked up the retired numbers and who they were retired for before watching. As a non yankee fan I came away from it with a very similar list with my only major differences being Reggie Jackson and Roger Maris on my definitely shoulder be retired list and Phil Rizzuto as maybe. I didn’t realize he was a broadcaster for the team for so long too because I didn’t get deep into my love of baseball until the 1997 season after he was done. You made great arguments for all the placements and I know some people will think it’s bias because you are a Yankee fan but I had no idea before watching this and if you hadn’t said anything I wouldn’t have known. However, there are ways to honor players from the pre-number days. Several teams (at least the Giants, Tigers and Pirates) have honored early legends by including them among the retired numbers, sometimes with a team logo replacing the number, sometimes with just the last name.

As a New Yorker, I always found it redundant to have so many numbers retired by the Yankees. Yes we get it, the Yankees have a rich history, as do other clubs, but they don't retire everyone it seems. Yankees are retiring everyone in site that it is screwing them now. I literally stopped the video to make this comment. Gardner is not a 10th as deserving as the Warrior. If there was an unofficial captain between Mattingly and Jeter, it was Paul O’Neill. 4x WS champ, 4x AS, (add on another ring and asg from his time in Cincy) a batting title(.359) and top 5 MVP finish in the strike year of 1994, 6 straight seasons above .300, 8 straight above .280, 20+HR 6 of 9 seasons never below 18, 4 100 RBI seasons, a 5th at 96, had 83 when the strike hit in 94 and if he finishes the year definitely goes over 100 that year too. His passion pushed into psychotic territory(ask that Gatorade jug). At 36 in his final season he slashed .269/.330/.459, a .789ops, a 105 ops+, 21 hr, 70 RBI, and was one out away from being a 5x champ with the Yankees that season. To compare him to Gardner, who at his peak wasn’t close to Paul, and at his worst(age 36/37) was atrocious, is insulting. Idk how old you are, but I’m guessing you weren’t watching with awareness or even old enough at all, during the 90’s. And that’s fine, but an awful take. Anyone my age(41) and up would totally disagree with that comment.

I get it, I love Paul as a player and announcer. It's just that if you look at all the data, there are several players just as or more deserving. The reason his number was retired is because he was fan favorite. But so were Charlie Keller, Tommy Henrich, Hank Bauer and Roy White (heck even Lou Piniella) just counting corner outfielders, and their numbers are actually better (except for Lou). The real difference is the people that saw those guys play are mostly no longer with us. Let's face it, retiring numbers is a PR thing. Ceremony at the Stadium, pomp and circumstance, get all his fans to come out and raise attendance for at least one game. But for that to work, those fans have to be alive and well.

gardener’s peak is MVP caliber in the 2010 season according to WAR. Defensive master, and while he won in a ring 2009, He and Sabathia,like Mattingly were the guys who defined Yankees baseball in a transition period without rings.

This kind of video is great, I think you should do more retired numbers video, going over different teams and their many retired numbers. Discussing why it is retired, and if it is deserved. You could do the Dodgers and Red Sox numbers, or with teams with very few retired numbers, you can combine multiple teams in one video. I haven't seen a MLB KZbinr do this, so this kind of video idea is great.

I think retiring Bernie is reasonable because he’s a lifetime Yankee, but Paul only played here half his career and wasn’t as good. Even then, I don’t think Bernie is 100% necessary.

I agree with all your choices. As a fan of multiple sports that have teams with a ton of retired numbers, I've been of the opinion that a number should be retired for 20 years and then put back into circulation but the plaque and number monuments remain as an honored number.

Great video! I really liked learning about all the retro Yankee history. Would love one about the Red Sox. Or maybe a vid that lists every possible solution to the "running out of numbers" issue, with pros and cons to each. I personally think triple digits would look disturbing and not catchy to say. My preferred solution is for teams to let players wear retired numbers if they put a letter or symbol after it. So if 15 is retired, then one guy on the team could be 15-B or 15-X, etc. It would be optional to pronounce the symbol/letter part, and on jerseys it could be below the number instead of taking up the same text line.

One thing I don’t like about stat geeks, is that a player’s greatness is not just about numbers and stats, it’s about heart. It’s the intangibles . And that is something that they can’t figure out . Maris’ hair was falling out during the Hr chase. And he knew he wasn’t loved as much as Mantle. But he got through it, with all the scrutiny . With Paul O’Neil - he was a catalyst in so many ways. And fired up the team . A real warrior . And with Billy Martin- on his tombstone , it says “I may not have been the greatest Yankee, but I was definitely the proudest .” Calculate that

This is why you shouldn't permanently retire a number. Take the number and permanently post it in the stadium with the player's name. Hold it out of use for say 10 years, and then bring it back. You might even give the number to a current player who "earns" it as a way of rewarding the current player and honoring the past player.

Posada was better defensively than people remember. His ERA for pitchers is an advanced stat that people need to look into. Mattingly is my all time fav player & is a HoFer to me. He is the 2nd best defensive 1B ever next to Keith Hernandez. Both surefire HoFers. Pettitte - like Posada WILL make the Hall. He is basically Curt Schilling. O'Neill doesn't deserve to have his number retired, but O'Neill was a significantly better hitter than Garner, just taking a look at OPS and OPS+ alone will back that up. Gardner was an above average fielder and base runner but nothing more than a league average hitter. Please explain how Garner is 5 times more deserving? O'Neill was also was not a role player. Role players don't start 150 plus games a year and bat 3rd in the lineup. Entertaining video but that part was a big swing and a miss.

Honestly, 2 digit number-letter combinations (like A7, T3, BV, etc.) would work better than 3 digit numbers, both for how they fit on the uniform, and the fact that there are 1296 possibilities, as opposed to only 1000 different 3 number combos.

It does look weird…but with DEs wearing 11 and CB wearing 1 was weird but now it looks good. It just show that the Yanks have a long tradition of great players in their org. Personally, 99 looks weird on Judge where 10, 15, 24, 44 would’ve suited him better. But, by him wearing “99” makes it cool and acceptable for traditions to change. Just a thought….✌🏻

(Alan Trammell, Jeter's near-equal or *whisper* slight superior *back in full voice* in pretty much all measurable categories had to scratch and claw like hell to make it) No hate, and like I said, he was an integral part of a dynasty.
