Most people would be absolutely mortified if their off-air comments were revealed, its usually in-the-moment stuff and not at all a true reflection of a person/persons and that goes for every walks of life. Critics should bear in mind that we all have flaws and its just plain wrong to hound others for silly mistakes. The effects on mental health is enormous and clearly evident these days on the sad passing of many TV personalities who just couldn't cope. Dearest Richard, empty out that back pocket of anger, come on, you deserve much better than carrying that around for all these years, release it out to the Universe... The reason that this is very likely not a 'sackable offence' might be, to take a slightly circuitous route which isn't as controversial as it may at first seem, because it is merely a fact that women think more emotionally and men think more analytically (a University of Cambridge study of over half a million samples has proved what most people know instinctively) This means that many of the old un-pc jokes which men made about women and which women made about men are based on some scientific truths, even if they shouldn't be taken as inexorable fact. Yes, that's right, when women call men narrow thinking, low EQ brutes, there is some basis in fact. But without this, evolution would not have got us very far. Without the male literal lack of periphery vision but men's great physical strength and high analytical ability, how are you going to bring home a hunted animal which requires so many minute calculations and so much physical power to bring down? Without female high EQ, periphery vision and great sensitivity to the environment, how will the tribe be aware of when something poses a danger to the weaker people, such as children, in the tribe? Evolution and, indeed, the very nature of reality, gave us these traits for good reason. Now, does this mean women can't learn masculine modes of analysis and men can't learn female high EQ. Of course it can be done. We can all learn from eachother but, of course, those supposedly 'weak' traits were never complete weaknesses in the first place, in the truest sense. Like any good joke, there might be some deeper reflection behind it. With woke culture, since we can't even discuss the idea that gender exists, the conversation is dead in the water. In fact, it is important for genders to acknowledge these things. For example, if women tend towards emotionality (which they do) and women are more likely to be anti free speech (which is known to be the case) because they have experienced some pain or trauma, it wouldn't be wrong for women to self reflect on how they can take another person's words less personally and to use that 'colder' part of their brain, protecting themselves from certain types of pain in hearing another's words. Teaching would benefit greatly from this since, as a female dominated field, children are increasingly taking on the ideals of low ability to reflect on anything but pre determined 'correct' ideas. This is the very opposite of what made the Western world successful, so we are talking something really quite serious if we lose this. Similarly, I have personally seen scenarios where certain female professionals, police officers for example, but there are man, many other such roles, handle situations with far more tact, grace and less aggravation because they (quite literally and scientifically) able to see the periphery and read the fine musculature of another person's face with greater skill than men. This is something men can self reflect on in how they can develop. Women also have various types of endurance which men do not, which men could learn from. Now, one interesting question is 'were Andy Grays jokes funny under any circumstance and context?' This largely depends because, as suggested, you need the context and context might include the question 'what do these two men think about women, in the entirety of their lives and not just from a segment of them talking?' What would happen if you took a segment of two women talking as close friends in private conversation (we don't want to know tbh). Moreover, do women sometimes like it to be acknowledged that they are emotional brings and does it not make them feel beautiful to acknowledge these great, potent talents just like men sometimes feel proud to offer service to women in a crisis requiring extreme strength (such as one of those rare 'just wars' vs opressors). In analysing it this way, we might, in the end, conclude that there is room for contextual jokes between the sexes, as long as we realise that modern society allows for many possibilities of expression of talents and psychological modes of being. We might conclude, maybe, that this joke was unnuanced, for sure, since most people, even Andy Gray himself, knows that many women can achieve a high level of analytical skill. Does Andy Gray need to take some sort of 'bias course' as is the trend of the day? In some ideal world, there might be some course to make us more kind to eachother whilst maintaing our right to speak our minds, but most of that which I have seen is hideous (I saw one questionnaire where 70% of people thought it was racially biased to think a Muslim might not want to attend a hog roast dinner - no bias test will be any use if people are so full of twaddle). It might be better for us to focus on general learning and reading and following the latest ideas on psychology, mindfulness, neuroscience etc. What PC lacks is proportionality in addressing issues, which is another huge blow to those critical things which made the Western world great. Even in 1000 years, the sexes will still be like a venn diagram with certain traits being somewhat peculiar to the individual sexes, but with a very large section of our experience being sharable. Things would get boring if this wasn't so, wouldn't they? There will, in 1000 years, still be things we find funny about eachother. Now, I feel bed for Piers sometimes as a sort of guy wiling to address these topics, where others dare to tread. It is commendable surely. He is in a weird position where he has formally been in various jobs with specific mandates, coming from his bosses, to destroy peoples lives, and now he sees, or perhaps has the everyday common sense to see, that his bosses were wrong and discussion is a far better way to handle these hot topics.

If anything they made a cringey joke that wasn’t funny - but they are too apologetic! They shouldn’t have been cancelled. The media doesn’t speak for the feelings of normal people. Sky wanted them out. Sounds like they are happier away from the toxic UK news media but I’ll always miss Andy Gray’s commentary.

No one knows the game like Andy Gray. It was only once he left our shores that I realised that there was no one better. You watch matches these days where the co-commentator is Horrid Henry or Dion Dublin, and you understand that there are levels to the role.
