Just noticed you today, must say I'm very impressed. So far best McKee covers I've seen on youtube. Keep it up! I really love his style, and I'm trying my best to learn it. Drifting was the first one (only one so far) I learned, which I think is the easier ones to start with. It's great to start getting the tapping down, and a few harmonics. This one is still a bit too tough for me I think, but hopefully I'll get there with practice. I'm 25 so it takes a bit longer to learn new styles :P

Love the tutorial man. And love the fact that you're being honest about parts which you can't play. Hope you nail them some day... I spent 2 days learning the first 2 minutes haha loving the challenge though :)

for anyone wondering, the "waggy" thing mentioned in the chorus, that "muted triplet" is actually performed (at least live) using the left hand, hammer on and pull off on the muted note

Nice work man. I've been teaching myself this song without the sheet music from watching his video. I know it's been several years, but if you never figured out how to do the technique at the beginning of the chorus, it's not as complicated as it seems. He just does a snare hit with the thumb on the 6th string, and leaves his thumb resting on the string while doing a hammer on and a pull off on the 3rd fret. It's a variation on a Michael Hedges technique that Andy likes to use.

thanks a lot for your time and effort man, thanks to you I've put the song as GTP tab and been able to learn that way. congratz !

Thank you, just having someone play it slow for a change helped me figure out quite a bit about the melody. Just for the perspective. Ive tried to practise it 2 years by myself, before directing myself to one of the tutorial videos. Yours was the 1st and it took me 2 hours.. My palm hurts.. THANK YOU!!!!!! -edit- For the people practising and having trouble with the harmonics, try practising slap harmonics instead of the picked harmonics, i practise it that way so i can get the motion into my hands and then focus on improving that. But just tap the harmonics, makes it a bit easier to practise!

Just wanna say you are an absolute legend for making this video! Thanks so much!
@Bucci88513 жыл бұрын
@Th3C4ke A digital tuner will tell you what note you are playing and whether it's in tune. So if you are trying to get to DADGAD, you just need to tune the low-E string down one whole tone (to D), the high-E string down one whole tone (also to D) and the B-string down one whole tone to A. The digital tuner will help you make sure that all the strings are at the right pitch. Does that make sense? Type in "digital tuner" in youtube and click on the first hit. That will also help.
@DonCadavona10 жыл бұрын
I noticed you mentioned the wrong tuning on the video thou your guitar was correct so I just listened to it and came up to this tuning. So I heres what it should be. FG#A#D#GA# The fourth string and the first just were tuned down a bit.
@jakeshaw-sutherland6 жыл бұрын
No, that's the correct tuning he mentioned. The flats he mentioned are just the enharmonic equivalent of the sharps you have written down. :)

great tutorial, THANK YOU! made my day, was listening to blue liquid on really high end speakers today and wanted to give it a try, thanks to your guidance i've almost made it;) have a good day!
@Genesis1042513 жыл бұрын
@Th3C4ke preety much when you start building an ear to tone, yes the tuner will help, but when you develop your ear to the notes, you can actually use the 4th or D string in standard tuning to tune the top and bottom strings down to D, and the 5th string or A in standard, can be used to tune the second string down to A, its how i do it if i dont wanna pull out my tuner, lol :P but its a suggestion that might help even more. just thought id give ya a tip

a beautiful and difficult song, and you teach it very well ! thanks man i learn it from your video !

@JAKE887 hmmmm are we talking about the same bit? The very first notes of the verse should be played together. That's picking the 12th fret harmonic on the 6th string while simultaneously hammering on the first fret of the 2nd string.
@Bucci88511 жыл бұрын

Hi! I learnd everything because of you, thanks mate! I just miss the post chorus, i just can't play it :( Can you send me the tabs only for this part please? This would be awesome!
@Bucci88513 жыл бұрын
@Th3C4ke Okay, lets see if I can answer your question. When someone says "tune your guitar down half a step", it means that every string should be tuned one semitone lower. So normally, standard tuning is E A D G B E. Tuning down half a step would mean the tuning is Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb. I would highly recommend getting a digital tuner. That would really help you out. Let me know if this helps.

hah, glad you found out the riff. Hope the tutorial helps. If you're still having problems with it, let me know. Otherwise, you can also buy the tab book for all of the "Joyland" album. Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you ask me, since there are so many kickass songs on that album. I've learned "Joyland", "Never Grow Old", "Hunters Moon" and "Blue Liquid" from that book. I think it was somewhere around $20.

I like Elixir strings, gauge 12. I think they hold up pretty well and have pretty good versatility across the different tunings.

Good tutorial. My only question is, how do you play tap harmonics on a really low end guitar? I have a $25 guitar and the harmonics barely ring with the 1-finger tapping style that's prevalent here with the right hand. Any tips?
@TheMysticTeacup10 жыл бұрын
If you want to play songs like this I'd suggest a new guitar haha
@Bucci88510 жыл бұрын
Yeah, hate to say it man, but a $25 guitar may just not have the specs to sustain the notes, maintain the harmonics or even let the harmonics ring out. I didn't even know there were $25 guitars, lol. By no means do you need something CRAZY! My first guitar and cheapest guitar is a $200 Dean that still works well enough to play fingerstyle. Godspeed!
@Wardog1111110 жыл бұрын
I know this is a bit late but he picks behind his pointing finger on his right hand with his thumb on his right hand to get the harmonic to ring out. If you knew this and you have no luck, try a new guitar :)

The zoomed in bits with each hand is really all you need - you can see what notes I'm playing. It will take time with the video (of course), but I've received messages from a number of guitarists who have been able to pick up the song from this video. If you want something with the notes spelled out for you, I would suggest buying the tabs from Andy's website. Good luck!

@thewahooo1234 Hey man, sorry - I don't think I'll have time to record another video just for a close-up of each hand on that section. Was there anything in particular you had questions about or just generally the hand positions? I would recommend playing it really slowly to the video. I think I play it slow enough that you should be able to pick out what I'm playing.

hey everyone, I'm not sure why so many people are asking me for tabs... I don't have any digital tabs to distribute, nor would I if I even had the tabs. I bought the tab book for $20, which I would highly recommend EVERYONE do if they want to learn this song and others off Joyland. Hey man, I purchased the tab book for Joyland. I think yuo can buy it from his website. It's onliy like $20 and you get tabs for this entire AWESOME album! I would definitely recommend it if you wanna learn this song! Also, no, I'm not using any fake nails here AND I had recently cut my nails when I made this tutorial, so the notes and harmonics could be a lot clearer. I would definitely recommend having a longer thumbnail for this song though! Good luck!
