Pete Townshend formed the band to back his former chauffeur, Speedy Keen, a drummer and singer-songwriter. They first met at Townshend's house where they rehearsed material Keen had written, including "Something in the Air." On the record, Townshend played bass to accompany Keen, Jimmy McCulloch on guitar, and Thundeclap Newman on piano. As you guys point out, Keen wasn't much of a drummer. Still, they had their one moment in the sun.

Wiki: In 1969, Pete Townshend, The Who's guitarist, was the catalyst behind the formation of the band. The concept was to create a band to perform songs written by drummer and singer Speedy Keen, who had written "Armenia City in the Sky", the first track on The Who Sell Out. Townshend recruited jazz pianist Andy "Thunderclap" Newman (a friend from art college), and 15-year-old guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, who later played lead guitar in Paul McCartney and Wings. Keen played the drums and sang the lead. Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

This is really such a great song. Over the past 48 years I’ve studied rock history and the interconnectedness and influences of the rock bands of the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. I have always felt that there was more to be known about Thunderclap Newman, they were kind of a mystery. The only thing I knew about the band was that Pete Townsend produced them. And that they had some wonderful musicians, orchestration, and interesting songwriting. Like someone else said, the timing in some parts of the song was intentionally shifted. Their shifts between perfection and imperfection, coupled with the tempo changes, is one of the things that makes the song so wonderful. And yes, they may have been one hit wonders, but that had several other songs on that album that were also excellent. One of the beautiful things about that era was the number of groups that had just one album, or even one song that was outstanding. My record collection has many of those. Thanks for playing this one!

This was used in the movie the Magic Christian. This was the movie that Ringo had to leave the Get Back sessions for. If he hadn't had the movie to do, the Beatles might have had more time to work on the Let it Be album. But then, we might not have had the rooftop concert. This song was used for the ads for the Magic Christian. The movie was also a big break for Badfinger. McCartney wrote Come and Get It, a song about a fool and his money, a big plot in the movie, for Badfinger.
