He was a hell of a guy. A friend of mine was a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and did an article on him when he was in the Bay Area for 2 shows. We all met and somehow wound up drinking Irish coffees underneath the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge at sundown. It was very Hunter S. Thompson. He was funny, and brilliant and a poet. One of the best afternoons into evenings of my life. In a past life he would have been a bard.

@@johnpbh Formative years he was absolutely a Crumlin Dublin boy and the accent speaks for it (as well as his personal sense of identity). I would also recommend the live version from one of the most dynamic live albums ever, Live And Dangerous. In fact side 3 is an a absolute masterclass in intensity and pacing. Starts with Cowboy Song, straight into The Boys Are Back In Town, Don't Believe A Word, Warriors and Are You Ready. The dual guitar attack of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham really comes to the fore, Wishbone Ash had a similar dual guitar style. Was fortunate to see them live 3 times although not with Robbo unfortunately. Still one of the best live bands I ever saw. Another live album that never gets the kudos it deserves is Viva Roxy Music. Released in 1976 it bucked the trend at the time having only 8 tracks when the norm was double or triple albums. The last 3 songs (side 2), If There Is Something, In Every Dream Home and Do The Strand are breathttaking, the first two surpassing the studio versions in my opinion.

Give 'The Hero and The Madman' a spin. You won't regret. I was 14yo when I saw a tall young black man walking up the street in my little Irish town. It was 1974 and the man was Phil Lynott.

These guys were so musically talented, a real pro band live, yet at the time still kind of a third tier band in the sense of popularity, there were so many incredible bands then.

They were very good musicians. Phil wrote fantastic songs with very poetic lyrics. What a band!

The “Live and dangerous album” is a top ten live album . I heard Stev Jones (Sex Pistol ) talk about Phil Lynott and his bass. Steve gave it back to Lynotts mother after he passed away much too you . Jones know how to spin a tale

As many others have stated here Lizzy is one of those bands who have a live album in this case “Live and Dangerous” that contains the definitive versions of many of their songs. This includes “Cowboy Song”which segues into a rollicking version of “The boys are back in town.” It also features “Still in love with you” which is an incredible ballad which incredible guitar work. PS. The version of “Jailbreak” on that album my well fix the issues you had with the under powered studio version :)

My favorite thing that Phil Lynott's ever been in (outside of Thin Lizzy) is Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" musical, which is a mad 70's synth musical, with narration by Richard Burton. It's insanely good, especially the bassline in Horsell Commons.

"JOHNNY" - please make that your next Thin Lizzy song. More cool lyrics, even more cool drums and two guitar solos to die for (from the guy that did the second guitar solo on Cowboy Song). I am so stoked you like Thin Lizzy. They are my favourite rock band ever and I got to see them in concert on their farewell tour. They were awesome and will always have a special place in my heart.

I think it's one of the quintessential rock songs. Easily their best. S tier. And most songs about masturbation are great. Rosie by Jackson Browne is the greatest. I seriously can't believe people don't know what this song is about. He's lonesome on the trail. He's thinking about a certain female. He's riding in the rodeo. Then he's thinking about all those southern girls. Then a reference to down below the border and bustin broncs. 🤣 The we have Roll me over and I'll turn around And I'll move my fingers up and down Up and down Roll me over and set me free A cowboys life is the life for me Yeah Phil. Me too. 😂

I was pissed off the first and only time I saw Thin Lizzy in concert. They were supposed to be the opening act for Queen in Sacramento in 1977, and became the headliner when Queen cancelled the day of the concert due to failure of upfront payment by the concert promoters. Recently gone solo guitarist Sammy Hagar (previously of Montrose) filled in as the opening act, and nearly stole the show, but Thin Lizzy was great and rescued the night. Such a unique band for that time.

Always wondered what a bunch of guys from Dublin, Ireland knew about "Cowboys". Turns out they had a knowledge of the subject, probably from Westerns on the screen. Good enough to make a killer song, with a great riff and beat.
