These types of songs were almost an everyday occurrence in the 70s. We almost took them for granted as they were just part of the landscape.
@relativetimeworx84592 ай бұрын
We absolutely did take them for granted. This track was little more than background music in its day. In retrospect, especially in the context of what currently qualifies as 'pop', this song and tracks like it get exponentially higher grades. But all in all, this song only really generates a "oh, I remember that" kinda reaction.

I think we definitely took them for granted. When they review songs like this and are so impressed with them, 1) probably the first time I've heard some of these songs on headphones. 2) The production of songs got more technical and expensive.

I grew up in the Missouri Ozarks at the time The Ozark Mountain Daredevils (OMD) were popular. Some of their members were in the earliest incarnation of another band from Springfield, Missouri called Granny’s Bathwater (GB) - at that point (late 1960s), I believe GB was a four piece blues band. Larry Lee, the beautiful high-pitched lead vocalist you hear here, was in Granny’s Bathwater as the drummer. GB morphed into a larger funk ensemble with horns who at one point was the backing band for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Around the same time, OMD formed with their eclectic mix of hillbilly, country rock, and the decidedly blues/R&B influences heard on tunes like Jackie Blue, Following the Way I Feel and ballads like Within Without and Spaceship Orion. The early OMD records were produced by none of other than the legendary Glyn Johns. So a bit of history from an old boomer privileged to grow up with some great music and the solid people of the Ozark mountains - which included some truly remarkable musicians who honed their craft in simpler times when talent mattered and great teeth did not 😮.
@bbowjazz2 ай бұрын
@@lauriekittle9459 I got really lucky and got to hear GB at Drury College for a few songs at the beginning of a sorority dance. My close friend and I were in the Branson high school jazz ensemble and were there for a festival. Of course, we were under age, but had heard of Granny’s Bathwater. We saw this band setting up with a Hammond B3, horns warming up, etc., and we asked who it was. It was like we had struck gold when hearing it was Granny’s Bathwater. The black sorority sisters allow us to sit in the back for the first few songs. It was extremely cool of them and showed how the music of the 1970s brought people together in unlikely ways. I mean, come on, two hillbilly kids from Southwest Missouri as white as a sheet of office paper, yet, because of that era we had music in common with folks from a very different culture.
@bbowjazz2 ай бұрын
@@lauriekittle9459 … also, you can find Granny’s Bathwater music on the Internet, including here on KZbin. Also the blues band that Don Shipps and Bill Brown were in. May they rest in peace! Don was, of course the bass player and a lead vocalist in Granny’s Bathwater. You can hear him sing Final Ride (which I believe he wrote), which ironically was played at their funeral at the Shrine Mosque as well as “if you blow it I’ll know it”. Bill played lead guitar for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils later on in the 80s. He and I were friends in college, music theory/piano proficiency classes and jammed together.
