In the early dsys they were underground and 'dangerous'....and only heard late at night on what the establishment considered 'subversive' FM radio stations. In the 80s they turned into almost a comedy act...and became 'safe'. Lost the magic, imo.

Back in the early 70's my parents briefly moved us back to Texas and some friends in school turned me on to ZZ Top's 1st album and Rio Grande Mud. When we moved back to Illinois i made sure all my friends heard them. The following year " Tres Hombres" came out and " La Grange " blew up on the radio and everyone knew who ZZ Top was.

When you said "It's like the blues", ZZ Top is basically a blues band, just louder and harder. Guitar, bass, drums. Basic blues chords. And they (like a lot of greats, Clapton, Stones, etc) have said their influence was and give kudos to the blues. You should check out these guys doing "Blue Jeans Blues". Nice work guys

Old ZZ Top....classic early days blues-tinged greasy rock! I'm ready for "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" or "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers", the short but awesome "She Loves My Automobile"....."Ten Foot Pole" would rock your world and make you smile too, as would "Tube Snake Boogie" and maybe more than any "Pearl Necklace" (yes, I said pearl necklace)! If someone said what does Texas sound like all you'd have to do is pop this track on and go "have at". ZZ is a Texas frame of mind. Hard hitting, buzzy shuffle with lyrics that only got by because no one got to the Z's when it came to censorship. You just need a Lone Star, some chargrilled oysters from Gilhooleys and a bar fight. Edit: My husband pointed out that there's usually a bartender with a shirt that says 'I don't make mistakes. I date them' somewhere in the mix. Good point.

@Davvy Jannes Very well said, and I totally respect your opinion! If we just take ZZ Top as an example, it was difficult to hear their raw, grittiness all cleaned up and "glossy"... One could still hear that dirty, bluesy rock in it, but it wasn't the same. However, they did have bills to pay and families to support, as do all people. So, I need to give them a break. Just my way of thinking. -- I kind of went backward into it. I was exposed to the glossy 80's, but went back to their roots, where it's real and raw -- That's where I prefer to stay! Hope this makes sense? Have a good one, friend. :)

"X" was what they called a Border-Blaster. The station was located across the river in Mexico, so the American FCC couldn't tell them how much output power they were allowed to have. If the FCC says you can only have 25,000 watts, in Mexico you could run half a million. I grew up on the North Coast, and we had a Border-Blaster in Windsor, Ontario, just across the river from Detroit. The Canadian government not only didn't limit output power, they actively encouraged it with government subsidies. Once on vacation we kept CKLW on the radio all the way down to Tallahassee.

You guys need to try some of their blues stuff; "Blue Jean Blues", "I Need You Tonight" and/or "2,000 Blues".🤟⚡🔥🎸 BTW, you're right on the money. Billy Gibbons is a guitar master.

I like 2,000 Blues and I Need You Tonight for 80's tracks but would not be my A&A recommendation when they have so much other tasty Blues. How bout " Brown Sugar" from their first album.

Wow finally got here! Might be my all time favorite ZZ Top song, followed by "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" then everything else. Been a fan since high school days and Tres Hombres came out about a month or so after I graduated in 1973. The Reverend Billy G sure spanks the plank on this one!

Now it's time for. Later 70's. ZZ Top " Cheap Sunglasses" & " I'm Bad I'm Nationwide" from the album "Dueguelllo".(circa 79) Funkier, better production but no 80's overproduction.

@Thundertrain Definitely, even "Brown Sugar" from their first album. Can"t go wrong with anything from that era but just to show them how they developed would suggest tracks mentioned from 79.

ZZ Top, very bluesy, then transitioned into pop, then back to rock. The band I've seen the most number of times in concert beginning in '80. These might not be their best songs but undeniably their most tongue-in-cheek lyrics: velcro fly, pearl necklace, woke up with wood, tube snake boogie.
