Back in the early 70's my parents briefly moved us back to Texas and some friends in school turned me on to ZZ Top's 1st album and Rio Grande Mud. When you said "It's like the blues", ZZ Top is basically a blues band, just louder and harder. Guitar, bass, drums. Basic blues chords. If someone said what does Texas sound like all you'd have to do is pop this track on and go "have at". ZZ is a Texas frame of mind. Hard hitting, buzzy shuffle with lyrics that only got by because no one got to the Z's when it came to censorship. You just need a Lone Star, some chargrilled oysters from Gilhooleys and a bar fight. Edit: My husband pointed out that there's usually a bartender with a shirt that says 'I don't make mistakes. I date them' somewhere in the mix. Good point.

I lived in the wilds of Wales, and I bought and loved 'Fandango' in 1975, a highly unusual thing to do. I felt they sold out in the 80s, but what an honest combo they were before that.
@lisaw56044 жыл бұрын
For some reason, I don't think of it as "selling out" in the 80's. They went into survival mode, as so many did and they made it out the other side. The 80's were such a tough time for musicians. omg! jmo though. Have a great day! :)

Ha, I was the opposite. I grew up in Texas seeing ZZ Top frequently and ended up living in Pembrokeshire for several years in my early 20s. Love the wilds of Wales. ZZ Top certainly underwent an evolution after MTV hit. Still love the older stuff and they can still bring it live.
@lisaw56044 жыл бұрын
@Davvy Jannes Very well said, and I totally respect your opinion! If we just take ZZ Top as an example, it was difficult to hear their raw, grittiness all cleaned up and "glossy"... One could still hear that dirty, bluesy rock in it, but it wasn't the same. However, they did have bills to pay and families to support, as do all people. So, I need to give them a break. Just my way of thinking. -- I kind of went backward into it. I was exposed to the glossy 80's, but went back to their roots, where it's real and raw -- That's where I prefer to stay! Hope this makes sense? Have a good one, friend. :)

"Heard It On The X" is a total jam. It's about an underground radio station in Texas. This station could be heard along Florida's gulf coast during the overnight hours.
@thatoneguyagain22524 жыл бұрын
"X" was what they called a Border-Blaster. The station was located across the river in Mexico, so the American FCC couldn't tell them how much output power they were allowed to have. If the FCC says you can only have 25,000 watts, in Mexico you could run half a million. I grew up on the North Coast, and we had a Border-Blaster in Windsor, Ontario, just across the river from Detroit. The Canadian government not only didn't limit output power, they actively encouraged it with government subsidies. Once on vacation we kept CKLW on the radio all the way down to Tallahassee.

Another band I’ve been listening to for 50+ years 🔥🎸🎤🔥 They have a huge catalog well worth checking out 😉 This one is on my house cleaning playlist 🤣🤣 First ZZ Top album I bought was Tres Hombres 🔥🔥 Could be a good one for a future entire album reaction??

ZZ Top, very bluesy, then transitioned into pop, then back to rock. The band I've seen the most number of times in concert beginning in '80. These might not be their best songs but undeniably their most tongue-in-cheek lyrics: velcro fly, pearl necklace, woke up with wood, tube snake boogie.

Glad you came back to the Top! Saw ZZ Top live, HS graduation night 1980, El Paso Colesium. A Gibson Custom gold top played with a filed down peso, Fender Standard Bass, and a drum kit. 2 hours without a break. They slayed it. Keep them coming, well done boys...very well done.

Kinks best English sound not called the Beatles. Led Zep was better, but the Kinks are English sound all the way. Too many good songs to even name one.

Great selection! "Jesus just left Chicago" should be next on your ZZ Top list. They were solid gold, oh their first 5-6 albums

Wow, a new one for me...How did I manage to miss such a great tune like this from ZZTOP. The only thing i can think of is it wasn't radio friendly at the time. Some great licks in there. Seing Andy make those faces was how I was feeling too. Good stuff.

Their first single that didn't sell well except in Texas is Somebody Else Been Shaking Your Tree...and it is still one of my favorites! Beer drinkers and hell raisers is another good one.

Anybody else nervously and intently watch the bourbon in Alex’s hand? How did it not spill

Obviously, a Brewer would be concerned about that.
