Try tuning 6 up to G. You have a massive sounding bottom end with a little natural chorusing. It will not hurt your neck on the typical solid body guitar, and you can always tune it to D when you're not using it.

We play Little Red Rooster in my band sometimes. I have guitar tuned to open E with a capo on the 3rd fret putting me in open G. One of the other guitarists plays his guitar in open G. We dedicate the better part of a set playing different blues rock folk mix of music in alternate tunings. Years ago as a beginner on guitar I focused mostly playing guitar in open G. It got me interested in other alternate tunings and drew me closer to standard tuning. This was a GREAT video.....

What I do these days is I tune my Guitar to Open E and put a capo on the 3rd Fret which gives me Open G Terz Tuning. It's a bit brighter than the Keith Richards 5 String Open G Tuning in the video (same tuning as a Banjo but the 5th String is 2 Octaves Lower than it normally would be) so it does add some high end.
@konradgundel42475 ай бұрын
Addenda: I was meaning 5 7 7 6 x x for the same voicing tone-wise - its much more dull. I'm thru with open G and open A cos I need to do ONE thing right and not show off multi-multi talent like the kind of Jimi Page etc. but I got to admit the ones like Keith got it nailed in terms of sound clarity
@RockStarOscarStern6345 ай бұрын
@@konradgundel4247 So why not use 7-38 gauge strings & tune to Open G Terz Tuning (GDGBDG)? which is like as if you're playing in open e w/ a capo on the 3rd fret.

I saw an interview with Richards and he emphasised that the reason not to have the bottom string active was to make sure the root note of the chord is G. I have a Tele set up like him with 5 strings and I use my usual 10-46 set but move them up a notch so that the top string is 13 and the bottom 5th string is the 46. (a spare 10 is always useful for other guitars) There doesn't seem to be a lot of bending involved with Open G Stones songs so heavier strings work for me.

I was age 14 when I first fell in love with the sound of slide guitar, courtesy of Brian Jones' playing on "Little Red Rooster." It was the first traditional blues song ever to top the singles chart in the U.K. I brought my vinyl copy of "The Rolling Stones, Now!" to school in the spring of 1965. When my 8th grade classmates heard Brian's slide guitar, they told me my record must be warped.

Unless you are going to keep your guitar in open G mode, I suggest you keep the sixth string and keep it mute. The truss rod balances the string tension and by taking the thickest string out you will have an imbalance and the truss rod will move towards negative relief and buzz.

Tuning up to a note sets you up to have it slip out of tune at the nut or the bridge. Always go a little high and come down. Especially if you bend a lot.
