why not just electroplate gold onto silver

I could electro plate it but the idea is to try things that I've not tried before. Keum Boo offers a more hard wearing, longer lasting surface finish than plating. Regards . . Andy

Toaster ovens often have heating elements inside what I assume are quarts tubes.

Thanks Jack I've only ever seen toaster elements wrapped around sheets of mica. I've been thinking about it and I reckon that one could embed an element into a small block of fire cement or fire putty. (maybe even pottery clay) You can get fire cement at hardware stores. Don't make it too big though, try 1"x1" x 1/2" and see how it goes. I want to check out if one could use a 12 volt battery charger as the power supply. Screwfix in the UK do a 4 amp 12 volt charger for £21 (Feb 2023) that would deliver 48 watts into a 3 ohms element. Not sure if that would get hot enough. It would have to be very well insulated with a top cover. I'd try two 6 ohms elements in parallel to give 3 ohms. By the way a 12 volt battery charger has to provide more that 12 volts in order to get the current to flow into the battery, so that would increase the heater wattage. I haven't tried it but if anyone dose maybe they'd let me know. Regards . . . Andy
