Look over my shoulder as I do an on-location oil painting of a gum tree growing by the roadside.

I like the cinematic effect, like sitting in the first few rows at a movie theater, looking at this painting.

When I like an image I try to replicate it in watercolour. So this one was one of the most liked watercolours in my Facebook page. So thank you! And welcome back!

I've seen a lot of painting videos and this is truly one of the very best. One suggestion. If you would position the camera to show what you're painting as you paint it, that would be great. Cheers.

At the 22 second point, he shows the picture source. Snip and save it, then open it (another window) and you will have both to view simultaneously.

Did you use turpentine to dilute the paint well in the first step of the paint or any other solvent?

What size is the panel you're working on and what kind of primer are you using?

hope you don't mind me being honest, but I think I preferred the original with highlights - it just seemed fresher (more honest? ) somehow, and matched the bright foreground (to me anyway:) The latter dimmed tree kind of feels out of place with the vibrant grasses lower right . Again - hope you don't mind me sticking my virtual oar in - it's a superb painting either way.

Would you mind sharing what brushes you use? I have been trying to lighten my paintings-they end up so dark- so I am going to play this again and follow step-by-step. Thank you!!
@AndyDolphinArtist3 жыл бұрын
I use different brushes all the time. Sometimes expensive bristle brushes, sometimes cheap bristles and sometimes flat synthetic. Brushes are not that important. Learn to control the tones first, before worrying too much about the type of brush.

I have a question. What medium do you use initially? Looking at the video, I thought the first layer of wood was pretty wet and would be difficult to paint over.
@AndyDolphinArtist2 ай бұрын
It was just solvent and, yes, it was a mistake. 🤦♂️ I don’t recommend it.
@romelbryan77366 жыл бұрын
wonderful work Andy, what was the medium your using?
@AndyDolphinArtist6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Romel. I only used pure gum turpentine in this one. Mainly in the early stages.

Nice painting and a well presented video, I have to say that I preferred the painting before it was worked up in the studio, I think it lost some of its freshness.

Just pure gum turpentine. I only started using it this year so I'm still considering it a trial but it was recommended by a well-respected artist.
