I've been a Kings fan all my life. One thing I learned years ago, I'm talking probably 15 years ago, the Kings will always inevitably dissapoint. It's not the players fault, it's not Mike Brown's. This is the owner's fault, and the front office's. They will never learn.

When you talk about the NBA and the whole thing with coaches of the Year getting fired, the main guy that comes to mind for me is Dwane Casey. The 2018 Raptors weren't even a bad team (I beleive they ended the season with the number 1 seed in the east) they were just missing the final piece to put it all together. They had no reason to fire their coach but they did anyway. This has become a new fad in the NBA to fire your head coach when your team is not as good as you wanted them to be. Most of the time (like I just said) the coach isn't the problem, the team just needs that missing piece. I think in most cases, it better to keep a coach that the players like rather than try and bring in a new coach that the team isn't used to.

The Kings overperformed during one regular season a couple of years ago, for some reason that created this whole "light the beam" hype. The Kings came quickly back to earth and the west improved a lot, they were way further away from contention than they thought and killed the whole progress by that ridiculous DeRozan decision that was obviously a terrible idea. Fox and Sabonis are not a contending core, they both could be great side-kicks in the right circumstances, but their flaws are just too much to carry a team, Sabonis is a huge problem on defense and Fox is too much of an underseized SG playing PG.

*Unpopular opinion as a Kings fan:* The Kings underlying defensive issues in the Mike Brown era actually started with the Domantas Sabonis trade as he is too small to guard most centers and too slow to play the 4. Now it is possible to field a good defense with Sabonis by having a starting power forward that has a pulse from 3 and protect the rim (Aaron Gordon for example) but there’s not many of those players around and the teams that have those players almost never trade them away.

Yeah I think Fox and Sabonis are a weird fit together. I see Fox and I think he would do great on a team like the Pacers. Sabonis on a run-and-gun team isn’t using his talents properly. Sabonis needs to be on a team like the Magic where his more traditional bigman skills would be better used. Kings just don’t have an identity. They have a bunch of good pieces but they don’t really fit together.

I've been a kings fan my whole life. It was so rewarding seeing the team make the playoffs for the first time since I was in kindergarden (I was a senior in college in 2022-23) and should've advanced at least to the second round that year imo. But that magic is completely gone. I don't know what to do as far as the roster goes because blowing it up and being a rebuilding team for at least another 3 years is not acceptable for me after so many losing seasons and blown draft picks. But also being a fringe play-in team isn't good enough for me either. I want sustained success of at least 4-5 years of consistently making the postseason and advancing deeper and deeper. Maybe someday make the finals or win the whole thing. I may be an extreme optimist but I saw that potential with this core of players 2 years ago, even last year, but now I've lost faith and don't know if the team will ever match or surpass the level of the early 2000s.

Still, that “Light The Beam” team was really fun to watch that year and I was hoping they would beat the Warriors. The 2022-23 Kings were similar to the 2009-10 Bucks one-year wonder team that began the “Fear The Deer” chant.

When the kings had that playoff season a couple of years ago they caught teams by surprise. When teams saw them on their schedule they thought “oh it’s the same old kings we can go ahead and pencil in a win and probably don’t need to play as hard” and also that season the west had a ton of injuries, while the kings stayed healthy. They took the defending champions to 7 games and teams saw okay we can’t take the night off and then the next season when they ran it back with the same team with the west healthy with only 2 less wins was the difference between being 3rd the previous season and missing the playoffs the next. Then coming into this season they decide to go after derozan of all players?!? The kings roster and the nba in general is built around shooting at least 40 3 pointers a game and you go out and get a guy that’s played for over 15 years and can’t shoot the 3 pointer? It makes no sense at all. The owner Vivek is a great businessman, obviously if he’s a billionaire, but he’s a horrible owner of an nba franchise. He meddles too much in the front office decisions as if that’s his expertise and now Mike brown is the scapegoat. I don’t think Mike had enough time to assemble a roster to his liking to actually move forward with and to me that’s a reflection of the general manager and owner. The kings messed up big time when they didn’t improve the roster after that playoff season. I’m born and raised in Sacramento and have been a kings fan my whole life and watched a majority of their games even when they were really bad in the 2010s but I stopped watching sports in general last season due to my beliefs changing about them and learning about what goes on behind the scenes, but I still check up on the teams I grew up watching from time to time. All in all I’m glad I watched that playoff season for them because it was hella fun and the city of Sacramento has a whole different vibe to it when the kings are playing well, but I’m glad that I stopped wasting time watching sports. All these sports leagues want to do is extract as much as your time and money as possible so they can sell ads to the tv companies. What changed my perspective was reading books like “the fix is in” by Brian tuohy and watching his interviews. The truth is right there in your face. Give your time to things that are more productive ✌🏻

I love demar derzan as a one-on-one player but not a team player. When the Kings got DD I almost cried because they went from my favorite team to watch to my least favorite team! All DD does is take the least efficient shot in the game of basketball: The long 2. It is hard to watch, frustrating cringe. If he just took one step back it would count for 3 points at the same level of difficulty. And movement stops as soon as he gets the ball, everyone just sits and watches, which is the opposite of team basketball

To compete, Kings first need to fire their management. Look at all the incompetant moves they made to kill any momentum they had: 1st - no upgrades when they finally showed promise and could attract talent. 2nd - trade fro Demar.

The Kings were the closest copy of GSW (Courtesy of Mike Brown, who just got fired LOL Not even his fault) The rest of the league saw Kings success replicating the Warriors. Now... All teams are doing it. They all had to keep up with the new meta. Mike Brown and Steve Kerr now appears powerless when every team in the league is playing the same way. The next Dynastic Team worthy of respect is the team who sets a new meta.

I’ve always said this about Demar he’s a good individual player but he’s not a good team player. A lot of the time he doesn’t fit into a team’s system. That’s why the Raptors had to move on from him years ago.

itsa cool analysis. i do hav a 2 critiques. 1) role players are rarely complete players. they tend to hav some holes in their games. that's league wide. cuz that's y they are role players. so this goes back to front office decisions (which is 1 of your best points). 2) good offense but meh defense will not lead to postseason success. but still an interesting thought provoking analysis. last thing. good nba teams, always lean towards better defense via those kinds of players, a good scheme and emphasis on that end. derozan is a good player but not a good playstyle fit. another solid point you make. bottom line: sac kings front office is not good at building a team around 2 excellent offensive players. which is the crux of what nba team building is and has been. it's hard to get 2 very good offensive players but once you do the clock starts really ticking to support them with at minimum 6 solid rotational players with complimentary and specific skills. as van gundy likes to make clear a good rotational player does at least a few things at a very high level. and i wanna add - but you need to build a unit, so these 6 gota b good at different, complimentary things. this mess is a front office mess.

Bulls fan here, I love demar and always will, i actually happen to be wearing a derozan jersey as i write this, but your team’s offense immediately becomes his when he has the ball. You cant just slot him into a team with two other stars eg: lavine and vucevic, he has to be tailored to for a team with him on it to work. As for how you do that? I really dunno lmao
