We just adopted a 7 year old recently neutered male. We have lots of work to do-but when feeding the horses-everything he does well (heel, sit, leave it) goes right out the window. The horses get reactive -which ramps up the dog. I will keep watching your channel and we will get this done. Who dumps their 7 year old intact male into the pound? He did not have much of a chance of coming out with many families. We are dedicated and he bonded with us that day-now-the work begins

THIS is an EXCELLENT VIDEO if someone understands what they're actually looking at!! Like 6-8 basic concepts in 4 minutes, shown and done correctly! Another trainer would have taken 20-30 minutes to explain this, lol. I taught both whistle and "Come" recall. Our "pet recall" is FAST, perfect and ENTHUSIASTIC. I started recall in the house and yard, with me hiding, and tons of excited praise, treats when he finds me. I still do that now off leash: I'll put him into a place or in a down, walk 20-40 ft away and hide, and recall. He loves the game. Off leash, if I've put him on a release to pee, wander a short distance, and he gets distracted by prey or kitties or whatever and begins to bolt, if I say "Come" loudly, he immediately changes tack and sprints back. Even though it's enthusiastic and FAST, it IS a "sloppy" "pet recall". Do you think I could retrain our recall to go through my legs and end up in this position with a three year old German Shepherd? I'd like to try. I'd like to get him some very basic BH titles. I wish I'd known more when he was younger, but his "pet obedience" is actually perfect, having a novice owner, he's actually spectacular.
@AndyKrueger3 жыл бұрын
Thank you 🙏🏼 You could definitely retrain this! If it is one of the primary ways the dog receives food everyday, with the right training I believe he could learn this quickly! Go for that BH! 🙏🏼
@Karina-Loves-Andreas3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyKrueger Thanks!! I DO treat with high value treats, and roughly subtract the amount from his dinner. I get discouraged because NO KIDDING--his "pet obedience" is PERFECT. But the first year we did dog parks and positive only nonsense. I SOCIALIZED the heck out of him (by a pro trainers standard). He is FEARLESS of surfaces, fireworks, wheelchairs, elevators, escalators, shopping carts, agility equipment, and much more. I just didn't know about sports level obedience. And our "bane"...bitework. I TOTALLY inhibited this guy's bite. Didn't allow tug at all. I was SO MISINFORMED. Extremely well bred GSD. His mother is a true "Service Dog". Mother from titled West German lines, father from titled East German lines. One sibling went straight to Police Academy. Two siblings went to Wounded Warriors. My MAIN regret is not encouraging bite work. Otherwise, he's rock solid. He's now VERY engaged with me. I made all training as much "fun, play" as I could to keep it interesting for him, get him engaged. He now gets corrections (mostly pretty gentle), and he's RELIABLE OFF LEASH in suburban areas. THIS is a BIG DEAL & accomplishment for us. I feel guilty that I didn't give him what I know now, watching people like you. Thanks for your encouragement. I think I will have to do luring to get him in correct recall position. He's very comfortable going between my legs (we've done that a million times as "play"). I just have to figure out how to get from point A to point B. Will have to start from drawing board, new signals, new command word AFTER luring into correct place enough, I think??? You are an awesome trainer, and so much fun to watch. My stinker IS exceptional, also. A celebrity at neighborhood stores and with neighborhood kids. We will be doing hospital therapy work once COVID is no longer a big issue. Super obedience, but it's "pet obedience" or "Service Dog" obedience, NOT competition obedience. Your recall between legs would clearly help us get BH titles. We'll be getting AKC GC and Community Citizen soon, THOSE will be a " piece of cake". I only hesitated because when younger, with dog parks & such, he became reactive. And Good Citizen involves being around a lot of strange dogs. "Community Citizen" is considered "level 2" after AKC GC, but he could have flown through that with flying colors a year or two ago. We're finally at the stage where I can walk him off leash around other dogs without worrying much; IF he pays too much attention, a quick "eh-eh" brings him back to my side. And if he's in a pet heel (not looking at my face but next to my thigh), he won't break position if he sees other dogs. Have a great weekend! Hopefully I'll have a good progress update to send you in a few weeks or month. I'm excited to get this going with him!😄❤🐾
@Karina-Loves-Andreas3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyKrueger Today was exciting. My "pet" working line GSD has demonstrated good "down in motion" while heeling. I started putting him in "down" while on release "breaks" and during active recall in line of sight toward me, also with a good/fast response. Today, for the first time, I threw balls and commanded "down" while running AWAY from me, where he's motivated to get the ball, AND CAN'T SEE any hand/body signals. And he went into fast, perfect downs!!! While running away from me! I'm so delighted with my brilliant boy. He may not be ready for competition yet, but at three years old, he's still incredibly smart and willing to do new things! I feel like today was a special accomplishment. I also think German Shepherds are VERY GOOD at "generalizing" certain things. While I can't necessarily depend on him to successfully generalize certain behaviors or commands, I'm always SO THRILLED when he does. He hasn't won any "titles", but he's the BEST German Shepherd in the world as far as I'm concerned!!🐾❤😁❤🐾

Andy, if I may offer a tip for "luring treats"? Frozen peanut butter without salt or sugar (or additive free sunbutter or almond butter) in a clean, empty yogurt container works wonders, especially with a dog that either manages to get your chicken out of your hand despite holding it correctly, or loses interest when he realizes he can't get the entire piece of chicken easily.💖👍👍🐾
