I literally just got off the phone with a recruiter. Here are some of her reactions after I asked these questions: "Wow! No one ever asked that before. Great question." "That's a really good question. You really know exactly what to ask." I was going to tell her to thank Andy, but I think I'll wait till she's job hunting, then send her the link to this video. Great stuff boss!

Notes - Questions for Recruiter 1. Why is the position open? Did someone quit or get fired? 2. Have you tried to fill it internally? Am I up against someone inside? What are they lacking? 3. How long has the position been open? Is anyone desparate to get this position filled? Have any of the requirements changed from the posting? 4. Are there any other candidates you are interviewing for this position? Where are they in the process? How are they doing? What are your reservations with hiring those people? 5. What are the actual keys to hiring? What precisely do you need? 6. Where are you finding your candidates? I want to know because I'm in the middle of a job search. I love your company, but if something doesn't work out I'm always looking for different ways to circulate my credentials and possible surface my next job.

Ask right out the shoot. Why is the position open? Did they fire someone? Are they growing? Have they considered hiring from within? Am I competing with an internal employee? How long has it been open? What can they live without? Get a sense why it’s been open. What has been missing in the other candidates? Highlight what you can do they don’t. What’s the actual key to hiring?stuff stuff stuff they want. Look at the top requirements. 2-3 are really important requirements. Sources? Where are they getting their employees? Well as you can see I’m on a job hunt.

Why is this job open? Are you recruiting internally for this position? How long has the position been open? (May want to get a sense of why it's been open that long also) If the job description has been open for a while, what has been missing in the other candidates that you've interviewed? What are the most important qualities that you're looking for in the candidate? Where are you sourcing your job candidates? (If they ask why you want to know that then say... Well the company and this position are very attractive to me, but I am interviewing currently and I want to know how I can circulate my credentials and find my next dream job.

So, after the position requirements have been changed, the employer doesn't go back to review the candidates who may have been previously ignored? Recruiters do not go back to previous candidates? Also, do recruiters lie? Of course some do. Some of these questions, for example, how many have you interviewed? Do you have anyone else you are considering? Will they honestly answer?

Andrew, I enjoy your videos and I think you are doing a great job and I really think that you should have more views. Your content is so great and unique. I have received mail from a group leader of the department at the company I have applied for a job. He asked me if I am available Monday for a phone call. He wants to ask me about my background and tell me about the position. I was happy and agreed. The day later one of my co-workers sent me message telling me he got a call from some other person in that company who happens to be a senior engineer with extensive background and asked him about me. And my coworker said only positive things about me and recommended me for that job. I am pretty active on linkedin and couple days before this happened I added a person who works for the same company. And after the e-mail I received I wrote him and he actually told me that he will be on the call as well. I am puzzled and don't know whether to think about this just as a phone screening or an actual job interview. These guys are not recruiters. They are engineers and the people who I will work with if I am hired. Do these tips apply if the interviewers are not the recruiting managers? And how common it is to contact coworkers even though I did not list them as my reference? Thank you.

@andylacivita

That specific response is not a red flag. I called that honesty. Now, it’s up to you to ask the appropriate questions about why their employee is not strong enough. You also need to dig at the employer as to what the employer could have done to make the employee stronger. If they say nothing, Then you need to dig at the employer as to what they could have done in the recruitment process to better detect this employee would not be strong enough. The point here is to get at the actual root of the issue!
