In this video I'm making a new stock and fore end for my Papas old Springfield 12 gouge shotgun. I bored the hole for the bolt on my drill press using long 3/8" twist bit and 3/4 brad point bit. The fore end was carved round using my hand planes. The material is walnut crotch I found in San Antonio.

My dad was a gunsmith, he passed away a few years ago, but my mom said he carried two gunstock blanks for 22 years and always intended to make them for some rifles. This video has inspired me to some day finish a project he started but couldn't finish, thank you for that Andy! As always your videos are great! Sometimes the best part of my day is watching your videos. God bless.

Awesome job brother. If you run into a patch situation, try using a clear epoxy and mix in some saw dust from the same wood. It usually blends very well

A beautiful result to be sure. A wonderful homage too. I'm a fan of when creators share their mistakes with the audience. Sometimes it's nice to have a reminder that we're all just humans who screw up here and there. The video format makes it easy to make videos where it looks like you never make mistakes during a project. For newbies, I think that can lead to unrealistic expectations. As I'm sure you know, part of the journey of making stuff is learning to deal with those mistakes. Sometimes you figure out how to cover them up and sometimes you just chalk it up and start over. Mistakes can be frustrating, but they're also valuable learning opportunities. Thanks for sharing.

“This, milord, is my family's axe. We have owned it for almost nine hundred years, see. Of course, sometimes it needed a new blade. And sometimes it has required a new handle, new designs on the metalwork, a little refreshing of the ornamentation . . . but is this not the nine hundred-year-old axe of my family? And because it has changed gently over time, it is still a pretty good axe, y'know. Pretty good.” ― Terry Pratchett, The Fifth Elephant

I think you should made more of this, I love the fact that you are using your talent to repair a gun or modify it, and it’s a lot more enjoyable since you find it diffucult and as in this video made a mistake and had to adapt to it, it kinda makes it like an adventure to repair the gun. I like this idea. I also thought about the Japanese method for fixing broken ceramic pieces, by filling the void or crack with a precious metal and it becomes part of the design. Walnut dowel wouldn’t be as noticeable, probably nobody would be able to tell.

Got to say, I love your band saw. Got one almost like it in my shop. Nothing like knowing that that thing will cut through anything you can lay on the table. But, I must say I have a millwright shop out beside my house. Started many moons ago with my dad and worked it with him for awhile before he passed. Now, I’m on my own. Lots of old tools I still use and can’t find anymore. Oh, no mistakes, just added character. Looks great. I’ve thought about doing that with my grandpas old 16 gauge brake over. I just might now that I’ve watched you.

When I drill a long hole through a piece of wood I drill from both ends and make the holes meet in the middle. I drill from one end a little more than halfway through the piece of wood. Then drill from the other end until it meets the first hole inside the wood. That way your through hole will have more of a chance of staying closer to where it needs to be. I only do that on my personal projects because it doesn't matter to me if my through hole is not totally straight. The most important to me is that whatever has to go through the hole does not bind.
