I’m a stainless/wood combo gun junkie, I bought 2 stock sets from Boyd’s for my CVA scout rifles and both cracked so I’ve been looking for ideas on how to make the factory polymer stocks look like wood and you sir have saved the day! Thank you!!

I have Maverick 88 with checkered synthetic stock. It was originally FDE, which turned out to be mediocre (at best) factory spray paint. It started coming off after I worked action about 50 times, revealing black spots on the forend and the stock. Mossberg said it's normal wear and tear and they can't help me - a shame, really. I was very disappointed with this finish, and was thinking to replace the furniture entirely. Watching this video, I decided to give it a shot since it's very inexpensive in comparison to my initial idea. I got awesome results! Love how it looks now. Much much better than original FDE, and so far no visible wear after shooting a few hundred rounds! I appreciate the level of details in this video, it was super helpful! Thanks!

I chased, had bidding wars, and finally got a full 590 wood set a few years ago for an older 590 I’ve refinished tons of surplus rifles and AKs over the years. This is totally doable. Can’t believe I never thought of it

They'd have my money... and alot of others as well. I think wood grain looks so much better than black polymer, especially on shotguns. I guess there's always this diy and hydro dipping. I'm thinking of sending an sxp stock to get dipped like wood. Thanks for watching and for your comments.

@@CRoutdoor agreed wood looks way better then black polymer but polymer is lighter and durable so if they made a polymer look like wood grain it would be kinda the best of both worlds hahaha hopefully they see this and try it lol i mean its done on a daisy 880 pellet gun im sure mossberg can make their own but a better more realistic wood grain version hahaha 👊👍

Hmm? That would be interesting to play with. I dont have a definite answer, but check out the video linked in the description for how some different color combos react with eachother. There's also a lot of "tumbler wood grain" videos that turn out some wild looking grain. I might have to play around with some different techniques to figure it out. Thats a great question. This technique might be a little more difficult with a polymer stock that is checkered. I may try it on a random stock to see how it works. If you do it, I'd love to hear about your results. It also may help others with the same question. I would say there's definitely enough material to do that or some other engraving, it's just if you have the time, tools, and know how. @@CRoutdoor yes somehow this just popped up so algorithms were working for you. I'll have to look at more of your channel. I have a Mossberg with synthetic stock. I like that it's so durable. This could be a nice option to dress it up. Repaint when it gets beat up too much.

@@postingwhateveriwant If it's the overmolded/rubbery grip, unfortunately I would also guess not. Rubber doesn't take paint very well.

As long as it's properly prepped, I think aluminum would work great. Maybe look into "wood grain tumbler" videos. Those are routinely made of aluminum and there's lots of examples using them here on KZbin. I hope that helps and good luck with your project. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

He cheated some prospective wood stock maker out of about $2500 by using plastic. He also didn't at first wipe off with rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, acetone, or finger nail polish remover before painting.
