Excellent vid Andy very informative and will help me with mine, so thanks for my lunchtime (tomato soup) entertainment. So now back to curing surface rusted spraying with ACF50 on 3 bikes 1.1935 NSU OSL501 this just needed a clean and dust washed off no rust and was seconded to the Luftwaffe during WW2, complete and unrestored, 2.1948 Ariel NH350 in trials trim and 3.quite a special bike with competition history is a Matchless G85CS 500 Jack Emmett Tuned grass tracker. The guy who bought it new at the Earls Court Show in 1966 and brought it to Ireland is coming to see it next week. The NSU and Matchless were my brothers he had a good eye and there are others, he refused to restore, make good and ride them.

Thanks for this one, excellent job, the best video on this by far that I've seen, nice and clearly and calmly explained. Now bookmarked. Great tip on the guitar string, I've always used drill bit on my Guzzis but it never comes out right. I've got to tackle this at some point on my (not too much of a project) GPz 900R and I've never had to deal with an in-line cylinder bike with this type of setup before. At this rate though I'll be retiring age by the time I get round to it!

One more thing. I always check my floats don't have leaks while I have the carbs apart. I don't know about Mikunis as I'm only familiar with Dell'Orto. The ones I've come across have plastic bowls which are susceptible to developing small holes/cracks which are pretty much invisible to my tired eyes. So the tip is: Toss the floats in the freezer for an hour to get them as cold as you can. Then place them gently into a bowl of warm water. Any bubbles that come to the surface of the float indicates tiny cracks/holes. Another excellent tip from the venerable Rod Yeomans RIP.

Even brass floats can develop leaks, seen it a number of times. Good tip about the freezer

I've just picked up one of the bikes .. opened up the cabs found out someone had "rebuilt "these carbs but..didn't put any caps over the pilot jets..is there a suitable rubber plug to put back in here that won't brake down with gas..or just research carb kit manufacturers and get correct plugs..???

What is the function of the part you mention at 1:54? I was unaware of them until I reassembled it all and had a leftover tiny spring, looks like I lost some of those smaller parts, where could I look for replacements?

G’day Jacob. They hold the choke (enrichment valve) in place. There is a small spring and a small ball. The ball locates into detents in the shaft and holds it under spring pressure. From memory the ball is 3mm in diameter. Try to find a local bearing supply shop, they should sell 3mm balls. If not ask them for a ball bearing that uses 3mm diameter balls and cut it apart.

Just wondering I bought a rebuild kit for my xs 850 carbs. And the float bowl gasket is leaking. I cleaned the face of both the carb and bowl, but still leaks. Could you assist me information.

I made it mate. I silver soldered a 6mm hose tail to an old plug and drilled it out.

I have tried setting float heights a few times and checked the needles and everything has looked correct but I am leaking into my air box every time.

Nice work as usual Andy, I have never seen the strainers on the jets before, (assuming they are clean) do they make any difference to the fuel flow? and do they have to be there or is that just a belt and braces system alongside the fuel filter? +yankee doodle As long as the volume of the combined spaces in the screen is greater than or equal to the needle and seat there should be know problem. I'm pretty sure it's function is more as a defuser than a filter

@Andy's motorcycle obsessions i have the same model and carburetors but what did yo end up doing with the auxiliary fuel line? Did you cap it off or leave it open? At the moment i have my 79 special idling but when i give it throttle it stalls and been trying to figure out if i should uncap the auxiliary fuel line and leave it open but cant find info if i should or shouldn't. When i leave it capped it and start the bike it rises in rpm immediately and when i take them off, it idles fine but when i apply throttle it dies. So your input about whether to leave the auxiliary fuel line open or close would be appreciated.

I’m not sure what auxiliary fuel lines that you’re referring to. The there are two fuel lines that connect to tee pieces, one between carburetor 1&2 and one between carburetor 3&4. Above those are another two tee pieces with hoses that run back to the airbox, they are vents for the fuel bowls and must remain uncapped.

Hey Andy, got myself an XS1100 and cant seem to figure out why I am not getting fuel into my carb 1 bowl and carb 4 bowl... thought it might have been those T connectors but they seem to be clear. I also checked the float needle to see if maybe it was not allowing it let fuel through but works fine... Any advice you can pass on to me? Thanks, Tony

+Tony A g'day Tony, thanks for watching. Wow that seems odd. I presume you can get fuel into 2 & 3? It all points to some form of blockage between the tee and the float valve. Can you blow air in there? Are the floats set correctly? Are the floats working and not filled with petrol or being impeded by anything? Are the bowl vents clear? Where are you located mate?

After a taking my #1 carb completely off and removing the bowl, I poured carb cleaner down the T connector and noticed the carb cleaner was not passing through the needle.. turns out that although the float heights were set at 25.7mm, it was close enough to the needle to close the passage therefore not allowing fuel through. I bent the floats just a hair and fuel was able to pass through.. it was the same situation with the 4th carb. put the carbs back on the bike and it started up! first time in a while! now i am noticing what looks like gas leaking from from around spark plug number#1 I am in Southern California with a 1979 xs1100 special

Good result mate. If you were in Australia we have a member of the XS11 community who does a kind of exchange program. We have a set or two of carbs in a float and he will take your set and rebuild, test run and tune them or exchange them for a set that is already rebuilt. He is a CV carb guru.
