If Only MP's were compelled to have lived and or worked within a 15-mile radius of the constituency which they wish to represent for at least five or even ten years, this country would be a much better and safer place. Notwithstanding the fact that it would rid parliament of the odious career politician. Politicians parachuted into a constituency because it's a safe seat and they are one of the chosen few, yet have no interest whatsoever in the constituents, or constituency that they wish to represent.

A view from the UK. Here's a question for you : Who do you vote for in an election, the party or the person? Me?, the party. Why?, because i've got my local county council to look after my local interests, haven't you? I can't ever remember my MP standing up and asking the PM at question time what he's gonna do about the traffic jams on the A505 at commuter time. I don't have an airport that's planning to expand in my village. I don't have a Railway (HS2), planned in my region, No. They don't need to come from the area, as they represent their party's manifesto which is what you vote for. Sure there's lots of 'promises' to do everything for their constituency, but hey, they all say that?

In the US, we call it "carpet bagging" and the culprits are "carpet baggers," an old reference from just after our civil war where yankees moved into the South and used their money to buy power. Carpet baggers are very rarely successful in the US. Hillary Clinton running for senate in New York was a notable exception. In a more recent congressional race in Texas, a major attack on one candidate was the fact he only moved into the district 4 years ago. We don't like carpet baggers at all, especially in the South.

It’s okay, they will be given accommodation in their constituency. Probably rented accommodation, which they will be able to claim for, in their expenses. Obviously, they will need a pad in London as well, if they get elected. It’s a hard life being an MP. 😂 My local Reform candidate is local to my area. So he will only need constituency office. The Tories have fielded a candidate in my constituency who lives in a totally different part of the country too. I guess this is further evidence of them a) not having enough ready-to-go candidates available; and b) giving up hope of winning.

Make it law that any candidate standing as an MP must live in the constituency they are representing and must have for at least 10 years before they can be a constituent in that area! Having a second home in the constituency that they occasionally live in should not count it must be the main family home. IMO that would stop party's from parachuting in candidates that live miles away, sometimes a hundred miles plus.

I can understand why @bobedwards6039 feels that way and I'm highly tempted not to bother either. Of the 8 candidates in my constituency, only one, an independent, lives in the constituency. The Tory one lives about 200 miles away. One lives 26 miles away. Maybe its time for a rule that any candidate must have lived or worked in a constituency for a minimum period, say 3 years, or even 5. Only then couod they have demonstrated any commitment to tgat constituency and understand tye issues and concerns of the local electorate. It would certainly end the parachuting into a safe seat of some party lackey.
