My first sewing machine, bought last week, is a 338 model. I've never touched any sewing machine, so this tutorial is real gift. I got the instruction book, in french, but there's a world betwwen read an instruction and apply, or see someone make it and repeat the choregraphy...Thanks again, Mr Andy, from France.

@@andytubesewing1953 Hello, Mr Andy :) You're welcome...I Just looked at your video showing how it works inside, and it's amazing how things were beautifully done with metal parts and such creative, precise simultaneous actions. In a few days I will open mine to put oil where it must be, I'm glad because I will understand why it must be put here and there remembering the moving parts. I love when things are done with conscient mind, so thanks again for being such a pedagogue and sharing all this content.

Thanks very much, Jenna. I'm glad you found my channel. It's a great Postable ZigZag machine. Strong & dependable. It's the model my daughter requested when I offered her a restored machine. Besides the 20 Vidoe playlist for the 338, kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKK4y8dsq3oMKJFTGsoNJWmi I also have a 30 video playlist of its little sister, the model 337 straight stitch machine. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJxbOOMKQPvmeTRqi0dhGa5 I show how to completely restore the machine, so if you ever need to adjust it, replace parts, fix the tension or the foot pedal you can see me do all that. They are the same parts except your is the fancier ZZ model that takes pattern disc too! Happy, happy for you and hope you enjoy crafting and creating with it. Take Care.

Welcome, and what a nice machine to inherit, congratulations! May I suggest you download a FREE copy of the original Instruction Manual from Singer? www.singer.com/search/support?title=338 It is a 38-page PDF and it has great info about using and caring for the machine. I read the entire manual of each model I work on as I feel it is well worth the time spent. Thanks for watching my channel and happy sewing.

It's interesting that singer made so many models that are very similar with just a few minor changes.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 4 жыл бұрын
Models within the same or two decades are similar. They made hundreds of different models over 100+ years, and the mechanics have varied quite a bit, but some things did not need changing. Needle bar, Presser foot, feed dog, etc.

Singer 348 478 bobbin stop will work on 338 if you ever wanted to grade your machine ..singer later decided it was better to make bobbin stop and many people upgraded 338 ..singer salesman sold them later as upgrades and put them on the older models ..there adjustable so you can spool different amounts of thread

I had been wondering if that arm guide was used! I'm glad to note I predicted the thread path correctly! With no auto stop, I would need to be careful winding bobbins on this machine...
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 7 жыл бұрын
People new to sewing on a vintage machine usually wind the bobbin at full speed and it's easy to over-fill it and have it come flying off the spindle...Yikes! I know this from personal experience...hahaha.

Hi Andy, Love the videos, thanks, so helpful. I’ve just bought a 338 and, like yours in this video, when I engage the bobbin winder the needle still runs. What should I do to stop this? Also you refer to service manuals, where would it be possible to find a service guide for this machine? Many thanks Glenn
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new machine, Glenn. Thanks for keeping it in service. If you released the stop motion knob as I show in the video, and the needle bar still moves, the clutch washer behind the knob may be installed backward, or the parts are just dirty and need a good cleaning. I don't know of a free Service Manual for the 338, but you can buy and download one here for $9 manualsoncd.com/product/singer-338-sewing-machine-service-manual/ Also, I have 30+ videos for restoring a model 337, the sister machine to your 338. The 337 is the same machine without the flip-up arm cover. I show most of the things you'll find in the service manual (not all) Here is my playlist for the 337 kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJxbOOMKQPvmeTRqi0dhGa5 Thanks for watching my channel and good luck.

Thank you for this video, its good to know how to properly wind a bobbin :) I wonder if you would be so kind as to suggest the source of an issue I am having with the 338, where the stop motion knob becomes loose after sewing for a while, then the needle stops. I'm pretty sure that I have the clutch disk(?) in the correct position with the screw in between. (watched another video on this).
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 3 жыл бұрын
The cause is your installation method or a worn clutch washer. Your "pretty sure" you installed it correctly. I'm pretty sure you did not. 🙏😉 You can take the washer off, rotate it 180 degrees and put it back on, and try that. Also, be sure the handwheel is completely pushed on as far as possible before you tighten the stop motion knob. I have also found the washer put on backward, meaning the wrong side facing the machines. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnnPammNgZaesKM If none of that works it may be a worn clutch washer, but I've only had one of those after all the machines I've done.

@@andytubesewing1953 Thank you for your reply. I’ve got the machine sewing perfectly now. My son helped me a bit with this as his finger dexterity is better than mine and he tightened it so much that I’m unable to loosen it. I’ve been winding bobbins with the needle going up and down. I’m wondering if this is harmful to the machine, perhaps in the long run. Next time he’s here I’ll ask him to loosen it and see if the wheel will behave itself net being as tight as now.

@@judy8798 I'm glad he was able to help. Yes, in the long run winding bobbins with the needle/hook/feed dog in motion will cause more wear, but using it that way won't hurt anything for a few weeks.

@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
0.6 or 0.7 amps if you'd like to see more videos of this model, here is a playlist. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKK4y8dsq3oMKJFTGsoNJWmi&si=A_GUrZHzlKs-JvvT You can also go to singer.com/support and enter model 338 in the search box to download a free copy of the original instruction manual. It's a nice machine. Versatile and strong and you can get pattern cams about 20 different ones for different patterns that you insert into the top under the arm cover flap

You are welcome, Valarina. Whenever I post videos of a different model I get many emails about how to wind the bobbin, thread the needle, etc. so I started to make these type of videos. Many people new to sewing or this machine can now see how to do the bobbin. It was nice of you to take time and comment, thanks!

If you have a Singer Model 338 machine it uses Singer Class 66 Plastic Bobbins. That is what it came from the factory with. The part number is 172336. I buy mine here: www.ebay.com/p/664504770 but there are many, many sellers online and in some fabric stores and even Walmart may have them. Thanks for watching my channel.
