Anemia and Thyroid - Key Nutrients to Improve Your Anemia Symptoms // Anemia can be problematic because it can cause many symptoms that look similar to low thyroid symptoms. Without doing a thorough assessment of labs and symptoms, then it’s possible for us to develop unaddressed symptoms in addition to the original thyroid symptoms. Anemia can cause fatigue, cold body temperature, heart palpitations, and brain fog, which makes it critical for us to determine the true cause and driver of symptoms. This video discusses the assessment, lab findings, and solutions for these kinds of chronic thyroid and anemia problems.

Unfortunately I've been diagnosed with pernicious anemia. 5 B12 injections later feeling much better. Now on oral sublingual B12. 🤞 That will keep it up, will see. I wish I would have had this information long time ago. Great video though..

@@daniellegibson316 Hi Danielle, oof! That's a tough one. I'm glad you're feeling better though! B12 injections aren't always fun, but they're a good way remedy those kinds of situations. With pernicious anemia it's important to find out why the B12 is low and if we have gut inflammation or antibodies for intrinsic factor. Once the cause is identified, then you can add some additional support as needed. Thank you for sharing your experience! Really appreciate it! Hope you have a nice rest of your day :)

Hopefully, by working on both simultaneously you can feel better sooner and get better outcomes in the long run. Wishing you the best! Let me know if I can help with any questions.

I have a question: If a thyroid is well controlled, I mean tyroxine level is correct thanks to hormone pills, can anemia be still caused by the same thyroid condition? I've got iron in normal range and all thyroid parameters are ok now and excesive bleeding has been treated and reduced, but I still have anemia half a year after all the possible causes were treated.

What about someone that had low iron and low ferritin , but normal hct and hemoglobin ?
@DrBradBodle
@DrBradBodle 5 ай бұрын
Hi Rick, thanks for the question! You can still have health problems associated with low iron even though your hct and hemoglobin are normal. Anemia is only one manifestation of low iron, so we don't want to use that as the only indicator for when we should utilize some sort of iron therapy. Hope that helps!

@@DrBradBodle thank you for the reply. Yes that helps . Unfortunately I have low testosterone. When I don’t take my shots my total T is around 100 and I’m just drained at the end of the day . When I do take my testosterone my ferritin is 5 and my total iron is 50-60 . If I take iron my hct gets high and they have to phlebotomize me which zaps my iron and ferritin defeating the purpose. It looks like I have to choose between low t and low iron. What advice would you give in that situation ? My hematologist doesn’t have an answer.

What do you know about fibroids and ways to shrink them?.
@DrBradBodle
@DrBradBodle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, it can be extremely difficult to manage fibroids. I try my best to optimize a patients fatty acid intake, which helps with hormone production, make sure their blood sugar and insulin levels are normal, and also support any issues with gut or liver clearance pathways. From there, we track symptoms with the menstrual cycle and also iron levels, but they don't always get better with natural support. One of the harder diagnosis to deal with in my opinion :(

@@DrBradBodle Have heard from other doctors video"s that increasing iodine usually lugol 2 % drops, can rid women of fibroid breast and help prevent breast cancer. Japanese women consume around 12mg iodine a day from seaweed foods had much less breast cancer but since eating more western diet has been increasing. Watched several video saying adding iodine supplement 1mg to 3mg per day can help your thyroid. I have borderline anemia and slightly low RBC count, my iron and B12 were both good, my thyroid blood test showed normal but on the very low end.What is your opinion on 1mg iodine a day as I am taking for the last month
@DrBradBodle
@DrBradBodle Жыл бұрын
@@tubingtonite Hi Bob, I have seen that before, we just have to be careful in the thyroid world as people with thyroid autoimmunity do not do well with iodine. If we think it can be helpful, then I recommend people starting low and slow, then titrating up if warranted. Recommended daily allowance is 150 mcg, so I prefer people start in the mcg range before increasing to mg or g. Of course, if you're feeling good and your lab values continue to improve, then I think that's good feedback for you to continue with where you're at. Hopefully this sounds reasonable to you!

Hi, I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis with anemia, neutropenia, and a redundant colon and osteopenia. I just saw my doctor today and she wants me to see a Hematologist. I guess I would need to find the root cause of the anemia: my WBC, RBC, Hgb, Hct, MCHC are low; RDW is a little high. My dad had to have Procrit shots for anemia I think. Maybe I did inherit the anemia from him. Any thoughts? I am a 68 year old female and my thyroid results are normal although my doctor did not test for TPO-Ab (TPO antibodies). Can anemia and hashimoto's be inherited from a parent?
@DrBradBodle
@DrBradBodle 5 ай бұрын
Hi Mary Jane, it sounds like you're on the right track and I do think that seeing the hematologist could be helpful, especially with you having a family history. There is a genetic component to Hashimoto's and certain anemias, so any time I see people who have relatives with those kinds of conditions, then I think it's worth checking the necessary markers, so we can, at the very least, rule out any issues. Hope this helps answer your question! Let me know if you have any others I can assist with :)

I’d be interested in a video discussing anemia and small intestine damage caused by celiac. My body is still struggling with ferritin and it’s almost been a year since eliminating gluten.
@DrBradBodle
@DrBradBodle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Leslie, doing a more in-depth look at Celiac is actually on my list! I just wasn't sure exactly what to focus on yet. Is there anything you'd like me to touch on specifically or would it be helpful to cover decreased nutrient absorption as you mentioned? One thing you may want to consider is that it's common for people with Celiac to have other food sensitivities, either to other grains used in gluten free foods or even non-grains (dairy, soy, nuts, etc.). It might be worth your while to explore this with your doctor as it sounds like there could be additional factors preventing your gut from healing. Something to think about! Thank you for reaching out and let me know if you have any other questions!

@@DrBradBodle I have also eliminated dairy and corn products because I was have counter reactions. I have been cross contaminated, but I am getting better at avoiding places that aren’t careful with preparing my meals in restaurants since discovering find me gluten free app. I’m definitely interested in decreased nutrient absorption, as well as how long it takes and what can help with the absorption of ferritin/iron. Also, sudden drops in glucose after several months of eliminating gluten and dairy (is that a potential factor in celiac?). Also costochondritis and celiac.

Hi Spike, thanks for the message! As I discussed in the video, the most important thing would be to figure out what is causing your anemia and what is causing your hypothyroidism. Hypothyroid is just a description that says something is wrong with your thyroid, but it doesn't tell us what. Work with your doctor to do some additional testing that way you can figure out specifically what your body needs to feel better. Hope this helps and hope you can start feeling better soon!

I have found your video extremely helpful. I was a vegan athlete & my iron was constantly low & suffered from dizzines, fatigue, heart palpitations, headaches, heavy bleeding etc. My doc tests Iron regularly and was always low, but not low enough for her to be concerned (at low end of the range). But I also have Hashimoto's & high inflammation. Your videos on Iron have helped me immensely to understand the iron tests & why I feel the way I do.
