How can anyone dislike something that is just plain cool?

Don't alter my altar Don't desecrate my shrine My church is the water And my home is underneath the shady pines Don't underestimate the spine in a poor man's back When it's against the wall and his future's black One man's story is another man's shame I ain't bound for glory, I'm bound for flames Take to the woods boy, and cover up your tracks Go away child and don't look back Sad is the lullaby from a mother's heart and soul When she knows her child has strayed from the foal The parish will perish By death's cruel hand And finish the job that fate began All that static in the attic That's just an old drunk ghost His chains are rattlin' but his end is close Ain't no hell below and ain't no heaven above I came for the drinks but I stayed for the love

The American culture as we were imagining it back in the days in the USSR. Cool, sinister, and with a banjo.

I'd love to hear this in a smoky tavern, surrounded by dirty men and dirty souls. It'd make me smile.

this probably isn't what the song is about, but this makes me think of young boys who look up to gangsters and mercenaries and the like, admiring them and wanting to grow up to be them but not understanding the pain and misery of that life

This reminds me of the movie American gangster, I think that was it, I feel it's about a desperate man trying to provide for his family. He can't do it legally so he does bad things to make ends meet. This song makes me feel like he'd die to make sure his family is taken care of, even if he can't be alive to see it.

exactly. I haven't always been the most upstanding citizen or particularly sane. I've done some crazy shit, and i was far enough out there that my dad already planned his eulogy for me before I turned 20. over the years I've calmed down, but working around younger people and having a pseudo little brother that idolized that batshit version of me I've tried to get the point across that they should imagine what I would've done then do the opposite. they think in bragging, making shit up,or that I'm somehow cool when I occasionally tell stories about my batshit days, but really I'm trying to tell the poor bastards what will happen if they keep it up... looking back my ex biker/tweaker dad tried the same with me.

it reminds me of my home. here in my 800 population town, our land is our lifeblood. we fish the creeks and lakes for catfish, we farm the land, raise livestock, if we lose our land to big businesses polluting shit, we lose our livelihoods. don't alter my altar, don't desecrate my shrine, my church is the water, and my home is underneath the shady pines.
