Often overshadowed by its smaller neighbor, Alcatraz, Angel Island is no less historically interesting but also wonderfully wild and beautiful. It's SF locals' best kept secret for picnicking, swimming, hiking, biking, and glorious backcountry camping. But there's also the ugly -- Angel Island served as the immigration detention center of the west and is the site of some horrific US history.

No, you CAN go to Angel Island from the Ferry Building.

I visited there two years ago in March and took a tram up to the immigration station. it was very eye opening to see how the Chinese were kept in an almost no win situation with the Chinese Exclusion Act at the time. The day I visited I was the only one there since it rained the days prior so they were closed. Fortunately the were open and a older gentleman was a volunteer docent who came up to me outside and gave me the grand one on one tour including all the spots roped off to the public. Did you see the toilets? he told me the story about the shame women had with no stalls so they wore bags over their heads to not see each other while sitting and were able to converse. may I suggest also visiting the Chinese Historical Society of America as well in Chinatown. They have more exhibits about the station and biographicall stories...The following day I had my comic book appearance at the museum for Highball and Pepe. The visit to Angel Island before hand made it even more special to be there . cheers!

Wow! That is really awesome! We had a docent but not as thorough -- did not get to go up to the bathrooms and that story is fascinating. Will for sure go to the Historical Society next time I'm in Chinatown. I'd love to learn more.

Zeene InRealLife great! try plan to visit Donaldina Cameron House down the alley for a tour. she is the hereoine who took on the brothels and gangs of the Barbary Coast to rescue over 3000 Chinese girls. there's a secret tunnel in the basement where girls could hide when bribed cops came to look for the "stolen" property of the brothels. And the basketball court roof top was used in a Will Smith film and Steph Curry commercial! cheers

Hi there Simran! I brought my own bike over on the ferry but there is a service on Angel Island where you can rent a bike (it's right at the dock just as you get off the boat). If you don't want to bike, there is a tram service that circles the entire island. Best to reserve before you get there: angelisland.com/tram-tour/

Simran Kaur Hello! Yes, they make frequent stops for riders to take pictures. However, it’s not a hop-on/hop-off service - you need to get back on the same tram.
