I definitely will, at least for some of them! I just finished my second attempt at the hoopskirt and I plan on sharing what went wrong and what I did differently the second time around. I think talking about how to resolve, or get past mistakes is really important because everyone makes them! Sometimes though, it's just better to cut your losses. Spending a few days on something that ends up unwearable can be really discouraging - and then devoting more time into editing a video about the project can feel really unproductive. Even if people would watch it.

I’d like to see the boning storage bag. I mean, since you have the footage anyway. . . . . Also, when you said, “I hate floppy facings!” I muttered, “hmmm, indeed!” I apparently still have minor hang ups about home made garments from when I was a child, even though I didn’t have many home made garments as a child, because when I recently made little A line shirts for my daughters, I finished the pocket inside edges, as well as tacking down the inner facings as I clearly remember the annoyance of having a facing fly up in my face and trying to find items in my pocket and everything in my pocket getting caught on the frayed inside edges of my pocket. Anyway, so many things I don’t remember from my childhood and that’s what sticks?! Anyway, your blouse and jumper are amazing! And even more amazing given the lack of quality in the instructions. Well done and educational, as always!

I almost died laughing when you talked about making a sequin corset. Aesthetically it sounds like a great idea but also like a nightmare to construct. The only ways I think it could be done is either by using a sequined fashion fabric on top of the corset or adding the sequins on by hand after construction. I hope we can see these "fails" in a video some day.
@AngelaCostumery5 жыл бұрын
Even aesthetically it's a bad idea. I worked SO HARD to create a pattern with interesting lines and it's completely covered by the density of sequins in the fabric. And everything in my sewing room is covered with sequin shards. It's worse than glitter. I'm too deep in to stop now but I hate it so much lol!

The jumper is flattering is dies fit you waist beautifully. And if only you'd lift the neck line tapering to the shoulder it would fix the beck gapping when you relax your shoulders. I had the same problem with my friends wedding dress and this technique fixed it and I didn't have to slash and close it this would of distorted the garment. I'm a couture pattern cutter and Fashion Designer from the UK and I was taught by one of the UK's top fashion tutor's he taught and wrote the sylibus for the degree course at the London school of fashion. Also with a 5/8 inch 1.5cm seam allowance you never add to the seam for French seams there is enough there in the allowance.for this , Ive done more french seams than I care to remember successfully. I've definitely had my fair share of cursed projects - even multiple cursed projects in a row that really shook my faith in my own abilities. One thing I always do to try and shake it off is sewing something really basic that I know I could do in my sleep - usually something like a gathered skirt. Completing a project you know you can do and feel good about can help break the run of bad luck, at least in my experience. I loved this video, by the way! You did a great job, even with those wonky instructions - they would've driven me up the wall and had me pulling my hair out! Good for you for finding solutions to the confusion and lack of information! And that fabric from Joann's is gorgeous as well - once again, it makes me wish I could pop over the border to do some fabric shopping. 😂 Keep your chin up, Angela. ❤

I really enjoyed watching this video. I am thrilled to know about the new Simplicity fabric. Your insights are priceless. The idea of a mock-up for the jumper, to help alleviate the gaping in the front, I agree with what you said. It would have been done with a lighter fabric and would not likely have shown the need for removal of the extra couple of inches. Do not beat yourself up. I NEVER do mock-ups (I’m too lazy). I’m so impressed with your very thorough processes.

Just a note about the pattern with the bloomers that might look like a diaper. I just made it but from a reproduction, size-scaled pattern from Reconstructing History! It's a 1954 bathing suit pattern. Mine didn't come out as poofy as the picture made it seem (I chose linen with a power mesh lining), and it is actually pretty flattering, definitely not diaper-like (despite having that potential). It has hope yet :) (side note: I may sing a different tune when I try to use it in water, but for the time-being this is what I've found.) As always, it is a pleasure watching your progress through your projects. And watching your videos has honestly helped me to get my butt in gear and start making things again, following my vintage dreams.

This whole outfit is CUTE. I specially like the jumper because there is no waist seam. A lot of the older patterns assume basic knowledge most people don’t have these days. Most people have no idea how those clothes got in the store in the first place. Thus you are ahead of the game. Just thoughts from “A little old lady”.
@lynetteshorten60432 жыл бұрын
Angela, I adore the outfit on you. also with reflection to the vintage patterns...Having come out of a time where most patterns were self-drafted and bought patterns were a rare purchase, I think that the instructions were minimal due to the fact that many women could sew or had someone to sew for them. Therefore the sewer was expected to know the process. I see so many modern young women struggling through following the exact instructions where I think that in our day, they were a 'guide' only. If you as the sewer, had another way of construction, then that's what you did. So...go too girl! Do it your own way. That was expected. Also re the apron...I can totally understand that. This would have been considered a 'bonus' pattern within the bought pattern. I can see that the confusion lies within the interpretation by a modern brain (where EVERYTHING is explained), to an age where most ideas were understood and little explanation was expected. I hope that this encourages you in your further ventures. These is really no right or wrong way to construction - its the end result that we see. Unless of course, you're entering a competition.
@lizzystitch48425 жыл бұрын
Great job! Alot of those old patterns assumed that a person already knew how to sew, and I mean sew with talent and skill, not just making a pillowcase as a home-ec project! In the 1940's, almost every girl was taught how to sew, either by her mother, or in school, and they were taught how to read a pattern and how to complete a garment construction! My mother was one of those who was blessed to learn to sew like that....both in school, from her mother, and in 4-H. She could take a new pattern out of the envelope and NEVER read the pattern instructions, and totally complete a garment to look beautiful. I didn't take home-ec because in my little town, the only girls who took those classes were the losers with poor grades, illegitimate pregnancies, drug users, etc. I did not want to be identified with them. So, I learned from my mother....not everything but enough to get by. Everything else, I learned on my own and through some very credible sewing books and on tv through Nancy Zeiman and Sandra Betzina. The people who write pattern instructions are, as you said, morons. They write poorly, leave out steps and instructions, and ought to be schooled on how to do it the correct way! But, I digress. Your sewing is very nice, and you are to be commended! Congrats!

Lovely! If you fix the shoulder & bust darts on the pattern, you could make several versions as follows: a) Casablanca - use white sharkstooth or gabardine, make skirt straight with kickback pleat in back. Make cotton jersey top in green/white horizontal stripe (or blue/white or red/white). Pair with white straw or cotton broad-brimmed hat, white slingback shoes, white gloves, large sunglasses, envelope bag. Presto! You have Ingrid Bergman in the shopping-at- the- market scene! b) Funny Face - make it either a-line or straight skirt using heather grey wool flannel with self-covered buttons. Pair with burgundy turtleneck, black stockings & shoes. Audrey Hepburn in the bookshop scene! c) My Fair Lady - use dark green silk taffeta & make the bodice longer so skirt can begin 7 inches below the waist. Change the skirt to a pleated circle skirt. Make 1 inch pleats all around. Use black velvet bias trim around neck and front bodice. Use velvet buttons and a velvet sash belt around the waist. Make a high-neck white silk organza blouse with pleated silk organza trim around neck and cuffs. Pleated sleeves with pearl buttons. Wear with black stockings, shoes, violet bunch tacked into belt. Audrey Hepburn in the library scene, "The Rain in Spain." Happy Sewing!

I adore this outfit and LOVE your HAIR!! I think it’s GREAT! I’m also glad you’re doing well with your new meds. As someone who suffers with anxiety and depression, I know how hard it is to find the right med combo. You’re a fabulous young woman and I love watching your work.

I saw this vintage lady fabric at Joann's yesterday and it is absolutely adorable. I think the blouse is perfect and this jumper really works well with it. Such a cool look

This was such a helpful video - I value your way of sewing just about anything and I learned so much! Making bias tape, attaching bias tape, that extra step of understitching the tape, REALLY good explanation, step by step, of making french seams - so, so helpful!!!!! Thank you for another delightful, educational video - you are one of my favorite sewing youtubers (sewing = pattern drafting, draping, mock ups, design details, you name-it!!!!!).

I've been watching your videos and I made me realize something. I love your vintage clothing but I am never going to attempt them tbh BUT my grandma had a shop in the 70s and she has loads of buttoms, threads, needles and other stuff from back them and I think some people might be interested in buying them hahaha. So if anyone is interested.... I'm here lol

After using the ruffler foot, I was kicking myself for not buying it sooner. My only advice would be to play around with it first. It’s really not that hard to use and gives really nice even results. I know I"ve seen tutorials online but can't remember at the moment where the best one was. Also, I loved your new outfit! The denim was a nice contrast to the lovely Simplicity fabric. I suspect you will wear that blouse until it’s threadbare. Lovely work!
