FYI: That type of sleeve is called a Dolman sleeve. I think they made a comeback in the 1980s as I remember knitting a sweater with Dolman sleeves about that time. Adorable dress.

The whole outfit looks so pretty and ladylike! And congrats on passing your test! Here in Germany we don’t have ‚learners permits‘....we have to do all our practicing with a liscensed driving instructor. The whole process is hideously expensive. And I was so nervous on my first test, I ran over a red light 😳

Marie Mason Isn‘t that the correct expression? Not a native speaker 😎 What I meant is...I was about to go over an intersection and I had the green light at first, so I should have just hit the gas. But from the opposite direction came a large truck signaling a left turn and not really looking like it was slowing down. So I did...and then the truck did break and I wanted to go, but just a second before the light had switched to red. Ups.
@doglover1neo
@doglover1neo 5 жыл бұрын
@@raraavis7782 You almost had the expression correct, you just added an extra work, "over". You said 'you ran over a red light' means you drove your vehicle into the physical light pole. To say you crossed the intersection when the light was red, you would say 'you ran a red light'.

My oldest daughter would never have passed a driver's test. She gets extreme performance anxiety. By some great stroke of grace, there was a two-year period where teens who took a driver's education course and passed the written exam were not required to take the driving portion of the test. A parental-taught course was accepted, as well. (We ordered it online.) She is 27 and has only found a way to be comfortable with driving within the last year. You have no need to feel self conscious because there are many who share your plight. As for your outfit, I love it. You chose a pattern that naturally flatters you, especially when you lengthened the waist. I share in your satisfaction of finding a use for the lone snap. It adds an extra layer to the satisfaction of completion of the whole dress. I think such snaps are missing from many modern dresses and that is a pity. If you happen to be low on inspiration at some point, please consider a short tutorial on the process for covering the belt buckle. I inherited a dozen or so vintage buckles and haven't used a one of them because of their peculiar colors. I also wouldn't complain if you eventually release a tutorial for the hat. It was such a perfect accessory. Every aspect of it was well considered and executed.

Oh my, this outfit is adorable, and so are you! Your sewing skills are beyond amazing and you truly are inspiring me to get back and start sewing for myself again! One thing I would point out is "nap" Velvet, velveteen, corduroy and such all have a "nap". If you run your hands down the fabric one way it feels soft and smooth, as the fibers lay down. Running your hand up the other way you will feel resistance as you are going against the grain. When sewing a garment with nap, you will need extra fabric so that you can layout ALL of your pieces going in the same direction. The lower edges all need to be pointing the same direction. You want to be able to run your hands down over the entire dress and have it feel smooth. I think you may have laid out the center front section of your skirt against the grain, or upside down. The result is that section will appear just a shade lighter than the other sections of the skirt, even though it is all the same exact fabric. I once sewed an entire skirt upside down with the nap. No one else could tell, but I knew because it wasn't pleasant running my hands down the skirt! I hope this helps!

Hi Angela, I watched this video a few days ago and believe it is a wonderful project to shore up your construction skills. As always, beautiful design and fabric. The pattern of the dress is something my grandmother would have worn to a wedding in the late 40s. In her case a navy crepe. The pattern has to date from then because of the length and width of the skirt. Sumptuary (sp) laws limited the yardage allowed in garments during the war. WWII era dresses ended at the knee with very little fullness in the skirt. Velveteen is a napped fabric and not easy to sew because it has idiosyncrasies not seen on 1930's printed quilt fabric. It will 'walk' while sewing. Invest in a walking foot. The walking foot will prevent the shifting of layers under the pressure foot as you sew. See 21:18 Notice the ripple on one side of the seam causing the seam to swing? One side stretched as you were sewing. Cut all the pieces in the same direction being aware of the grain line in the fabric. This means.... shoulder seam, waist seam on skirt pieces, top of sleeve all face the same direction when pinned to the fabric. Most patterns will provide a layout drawing for a 'napped' fabric. See 21:18, 20:01. Notice how the center front panel is darker than the side front panels. It is caused the by the way the light reflects off the different direction of the nap in the velveteen. Sew the pieces from the top down. This will mean sewing the collar from center back to front on the right and left side. (I violated this rule with a commissioned Cluny lace cocktail dress and the seams spun around the client like a barber pole. I should have known better than to sew down from armscye to hem then from hem to armscye. I had to redo all the seams to make the seams lay right.) Cutting out a garment with pinking shears allows ample room for error because of the width of the cut. Use shears and pink later if that is your choice for a seam finish. With velveteen, underline the bodice for support with a light weight muslin fabric and tape the shoulder seams and a waist seam to add support for the weight of the dress. The collar and front facing NEED interfacing to add longevity to the garment and have it drape as intended while worn. When you trim multiple layers hold your shears at a 45 degree angle to the seam. This will stagger the layers for a smoother seam when pressed. Very helpful on a thicker fabric. It is hard to get a smooth edge on a rounded collar. I insert piping into the seam and it always lays nicely. Put a row of stay stitching on the seam on every inside corner and every inside curve of the garment. Clip to the stitching. Match up the outer corner with the inside corner. The notches are secondary to making that perfect corner. See 15:06 and 17:36 (Match intersecting seams, centers and corner details. If the fabric was accurately cut... the rest of the seams will fall in line. Velveteen will fray just looking at it. Put a straight stitch 1/4" from the cut edge then pink. My preference is a Hong Kong finish. Nicely done hem and button holes. Both hard things to do on velveteen. I did watch your video today of the butterfly dress. You were working on the overlapping circles decorative trim on the front of the over-skirt. Beautiful. You are indeed an artist. Kind regards, Nannette

For a young, self-taught seamstress you do such amazing work! I would recommend that when you are next out thrifting if you come across a Bishop Sewing Method workbook you purchase it and study it. My mom gave it to me many, many years ago and it has been so helpful. If you had it you would have known to watch for the nap and cutting directions of your cotton velveteen (which...I'm totally jealous! That hasn't been seen retail here in my area in 20+ years!) to avoid having the layers shifting while sewing and also in a colour discoulouration of the garment. But nevermind all that...I'm sorry I missed this when it first posted but tickled to get to see how lovely you and your matching shoes look!!! Edit: I hope you don't take this as a critical comment because I am TOTALLY In AWE of you!!

That hat is really cute. As far as driving anxiety goes, I completely understand. When I first started taking driving lessons as a teenager I would literally break down crying in the car, because I was so nervous. I learned to drive in rural Indiana, so even though I have had my license for a good ten years now (wow, I feel old writing that), I still get nervous driving in traffic and I have never driven in a big city or on steep winding roads. I also haven't parallel parked since my driving test. I suggest listening to music while driving. I find it keeps me calm without distracting me too much.

I hope that your mother’s health improves. 🙏 Congratulations on your test and patterns. I saw one of your patterns in a store and flippantly said “Oh, it’s one of Angela’s patterns. I know her.” My husband gave me a strange look and when I explained that I follow you on KZbin, he rightly told me that I know you but I don’t know you like we’re friends or something. Great dress! I’m just a beginner and my dresses look okay. But I’ve learned a lot by following you.

Hi Angela...I don't even know how I found your channel but after looking at your talented work and your affinity for fashions from the past, I just wanted to tell you that you are the most interesting person on KZbin. My problem is that I'm a lot older than you. I hope you don't freak out knowing that. And it's not that I'm interested in vintage fashions like you. What I admire about you is that you seem to be fearless about knowing about the past. Most people I know that are your age (or thereabouts) seem to be very disinterested in things and events that happened before they were born. They don't know the great films or music of the past. To them, nothing existed before cell phones and the internet. You are so amazing in the way you treasure vintage fashions. The guy who gets to date you or be your boyfriend is a very lucky guy. If only I were a younger man...oh well. And yes, I watched your entire video. Not that I'm going to take up sewing (I love black and white photography and films before 1982, the birth year of MTV) but I love hearing your lovely voice. Best wishes to you.

Congrats on passing your test! It really is a huge deal, especially after you pass 18, cos then it's like the pressure keeps exponentially getting worse yearly. As someone who hasn't passed her test due to health (and needing a knee replacement at 16, but being told I had to wait 30 years to be eligible), I can understand the anxiety and satisfaction that it is done. I hope you get a lot more comfortable and confident in driving in different areas as this will open the world up to you. Xx

Hi Anigela! Yet another lovely ensemble..Bravo my dear. Now the matter at hand. The "Waist" they are referring too. Just in case out of your 399 comments no one else mentioned this.. is actually what they were and still called among the older generation of dressmakers and wearers alike. To make a "waist " to match or go along with a skirt suit was a common phrase. One still used among my sister in laws whom all sew.

hey lady! Loving the look! In the past when sewing velvet I have popped a piece of tissue paper in between the two layers of fabric to keep the pile of the velvet from latching together and warping. Once you sew your seam, you can just tear away the tissue and either re-use it or recycle it! I also found that clips were VERY helpful when sewing with velvet, even though I much prefer pins in the rest of my sewing. XOXO!

The dress is gorgeous! Parallel parking...I've been a licensed driver since 1978 and I never learned to do that. I was in the military at the time I got my license and I found out if I had a military license the state would give me a license without a test. I knew I couldn't parallel park so I got a military license because all I had to do was drive around the block. No parking. I have since driven in the states of South Carolina, Michigan, Texas, and Pennsylvania as a licensed driver. And I also drove while I lived in Germany. I still can't parallel park. lol!!

I just found your channel and I already love your videos! I know this video was posted a while ago, but I just wanted to let you know that I also had to get my driver's license a thousand miles away from my house and it was in a more urban area than I was used to, and I was soooo nervous before the test. There wasn't any necessity for me to get my license like there was for you, so I just kept putting it off until my permit was about to expire and I couldn't anymore. But I got through it, and I'm glad you did too! It took me years to get comfortable with driving, and I know plenty of people who have been driving for years and are still uncomfortable with it, so you're not alone!

this is the cutest dress I'm in love omg ! also about the "waist yoke" mystery, the french version underneath says "corsage" which means bodice, so it confirms the waist= top part, though I don't know why they used that ...

My friend and I are just sitting around watching your videos & talking about how cool you are. Also I’m TERRIFIED of driving! And she can’t parallel park! So solidarity. The dress looks amazing

This is gorgeous! I love the flower design on the hat. I think that just adds a lot of interest and personality and it's so pretty. Well done! Also, congrats on your driving test. I absolutely hated taking mine and now that I live in a city with someone who owns a car, I never drive anyway. I hope your mom's surgery goes well.

I think the dress is really cute, but I must say, I'm in LOVE with the hat! The fact that you can get something mocked up and made in a weekend boggles my mind, since it seems to take me forever (even though I've been sewing for like 35 years). But then again, I think you've probably made more garments in the few years you've been sewing than I have in my lifetime, so that's probably got something to do with it. :)

This turned out really well! And your sewing room is cute, but ugly. I love how you've curated the items in your life to that which makes you happy. And you're videos make me happy. Thank you for doing it!

Oh man, driving in other suburbs or cities is so nerve-wracking and makes me anxious too - Australia has some doozies! So proud of you getting your license, well done! 💕 That hat needs more explanation, looks like two styles mashed together but looks amazing!

The hat was inspired by this! www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-40-039-s-Green-Felt-Flowers-Tilt-Hats-As-Is-for-Restoration-or-Pattern-/222055113773?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=nQpRVAMv0e9PgM%252F1TzhdlEjgmNo%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc And it kind of it - a hybrid of the 1950's half hat I attempted a while ago, and a traditional pillbox.

very happy you were able to get your licence. I have a severe driving phobia and have not yet been able to get my licence. So my solution is to move where there is good public transit. Love your videos.
