There will never again be a band like Garbage nor a singer like Shirley Manson. The coming together of the two created a rock legand. I think I fell in love with Shirley in the 90's, like millions of others. The strength, power, voracious sexual energy, and voice on par with Freddie Mercury and Meat Loaf. Oh, what talent. And the kicker is when she talks to the audience or in interviews, how real, how sweet, yet how strong a woman she is.....all blended into the one and only Shirley Manson. Thank you forever for the gift of us being able listen to you and Garbage.

thanks to the success of Garbage, this DID get played more...on MTV2...in the mid-late 90s when they still only played videos. i remember taping this a few times on vhs tapes (yeah, i'm THAT old). This was also one of the songs played in the DARIA episode "Road Worrier" (YAY DARIA!) along with Mad Season's "i don't know anything"...

I remember the time she and Craig were discussing the differences between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Apparently Glasgow (her hometown) is working class, Edinburgh (his hometown) is middle to upper class.

Thank you, "Mr. Marker" (Steve) for being a fellow sleep-deprived viewer of the now defunct MTV alternative rock video show, "120 Minutes". You didn't know it at the time, but you discovered a legend. As Shirley Manson is and has most definitely become. And her work in this video just scratched the surface of her future potential. And if it weren't for Steve. The innovation and ground-breaking brilliance of "garbage" most likely would have never been heard or even created at all. The drummer and the guitarist (Angelfish's music was written as a Goodbye Mr Mackenzie album before Shirley took on vocal duties). Shirley only ever had one writing credit in the Mackenzies, on the song "Niagara". After Shirley went to Madison, she came up with the lyrics to Not My Idea while playing with Duke on swings, which was her first actual lyrics.

Dear Shirley (so wish you'd read this), I know people have criticized the Angelfish album but I for one cannot understand why. I honestly love the album & still listen to it. I actually think about what the 2nd album would've sounded like. The album as a whole is really enjoyable & all the songs mesh well. Your voice is the most seductive I've ever heard & Garbage is & always will be my favorite band of all time. Your writing & the boys engineering are a match made in heaven. Never has a band had such an impact on my life (mainly the lyrics) & I thank you all. I've seen you all perform 4 times & I hope to one day meet you all (without the mask nonsense). Her amazing voice and talent shines through. That band was clearly too limited musically to make the most of her. Steve Marker deserves the gratitude of humanity (no, I am not joking) for having found her, and Duke and Butch (and Steve) for supplying an appropriate amount of creativity and artistry to help her really shine. I was late to the game discovering them as a band, but it is truly the best and most creative music I have ever heard. Is there another goddess that can stir you to war in one song, and then sing you a lullaby that tears your heart out in another? They were easily the top live performance I have ever witnessed.

reminds me of "gothic rock" fairly slow and dark tune. alternative rock seems a bit brought/open. darker tune than garbage.

It's weird that Steve liked Shirley in this vid. Tbh it's not even that good of a song or performance by Shirley. I just Steve just has an eye for talent. Shirley can do so much more than is demonstrated by this stock alternative song.

Kairi091 The boys have said that they liked Shirley in this video because unlike a lot of female singers at the time, she didn't have to scream or shout to get your attention. It isn't the absolute best vocal performance, but it was enough for them to want to seek her out.

And I thought the video was quite neat but then again, I'm a sucker for darker imagery and I loved the shots with the Roman candles and that floating pan object in the water.

I honestly think the vocals are the weak point of the song. Not the quality of Shirley's voice, but rather the vocal melody and lyrics, and maybe the mixing too. It feels mismatched to the energy of the music.
