I HATE THIS VIDEO I LOVE BIRDS AND I AM NOT GOING TO LISTEN TOO YOU WARNING
@bekeneel3 жыл бұрын
It sounds mostly familiar :) except for my Moluccan cockatoo, maybe slightly shorter wingspan but got pretty big, new cage for 500$ (ebay). Seems like all the trouble a cockatoo gives a Macaw like this gives too, however I think cockatoos can still be more crazy & unfortunately even louder up to 130db... I kinda regret buying one by now lol, I knew some of these Moluccans from a rescue and they were always calm and sweet so I had no reason to believe they would be so loud & destructive.. And you're right, you can't leave them in their cage a whole day, I wouldn't want that either. If I'd buy a Macaw tho I'd certainly get such a Hyacinth, love the blue and how they look. But I doubt it would make my moluccan less loud, because I bought him from a place with many birds and they were used to screaming to each other often, that's probably why mine is pretty loud. It's indeed best if u got a bird from as young as possible, that u can teach and train them the way you want, I feel like if they are older it's very hard still to train them the way you want or make them stop doing certain things..
@lnayler3 жыл бұрын
As an ornithologist, I would have to say, you may be making your bird hormonal by petting below the neck. Birds also train you more than you think. If they scream and you run to them to keep them quiet, you are training them to scream louder and longer until they get your attention. I made this mistake with a very loud and obnoxious Moluccan Cockatoo. I grew to resent this bird until I learned that my behaviour trained him to scream. Moluccan’s can be as loud as Hyacinths. I was miserable until I learned not to run to see him whenever he screamed. You’re right though.....large birds are like toddlers on crack that never grow up. I like the chaos! The screaming and destruction......not so much. But all pets can be loud. And even a dog will chew your best shoes if you leave them out. The trick is you have to control your environment. Make one room in your house an aviary, with tiled floors and walls, access to a hose, and have a drain in the floor. Buy baby toys. They are fairly durable, or find stainless steel toys. It is possible to own big birds and live harmoniously. You just have to sacrifice and plan ahead.

Sometimes the abuse is mundane- where the owner is just not intelligent to realize they are abusing them. Last year we discovered a macaw that is confined to its cage 24/7, nearly year round. The owner literally thinks this is ok, that “he likes his cage” and the owner is so crude They think “ why do we have birdcages then? Birds living in bird cages”... The owner is a proprietor if a business. We begged her to take the macaw, while explaining why this is equivalent to a human being locked up in a little cell, in prison for 20, 30 years. She didn’t get the comparison. It’s heartbreaking. The bird Only comes out when they dedicate the time to a cage cleaning, even then right after the bird returns to the cage just like it’s programmed. What to do though, long we the bird has food and water access, isn’t suffering any obvious disease, the law has little right to take it away.

Can't agree with most of your advice since it's the pet owner that creates the pet's behavior. 24/7 attention will create a clingy pet and lots of alone time is always important just as time together too. #Engagednotcaged

Aren’t you reinforcing the negative behaviour ie. screaming for attention by reacting to her? She knows that if she starts to vocalize that she gets attention. All parrots scream but you can’t give in every time they do it and believe me I know how loud they can get. This is the same for any animal. You can’t be reinforcing their behaviour by giving in at their will. Great video with some helpful tips.

Your video has put the kibosh on any desire I had for a hyacinth macaw. Thank you! I knew parrots considered their human their flock, but I had no idea how intense that really is. Forget the expense of food, the cage, the bird itself, etc. All the other things you describe just threw cold water on any desire I had for a hyacinth macaw. The only thing I can think of that you forgot to mention is how long their life expectancy is: 70 years or more. I think I’ll go see if the zoo has parrots. But that has its own problems. 😬

Hyacinth Macaws are a majestic bird. I was friends with a bird store owner. He had a Hyacinth. When it was on your arm you knew it; they are heavy. He knew he was king too. I actually had to repair the bird's cage, made of 1/4" wrought iron bars. The bird bent and tore them apart. I welded 1" band metal around the upper and lower thirds of the cage, and he tore that up too.

thank you for this video I love the look of these birds, how curious they are and so on and so forth but I nearly jumped the gun a lady was trying to give away her 2 year old Hyacinth Macaw to me .... I live in a small apartment, and work night shifts, I do have a bird of my own (Indian Ringneck Parrot) but he's been adopted as well .... he hasn't been treated too well by his previous owners, so now i am living with consequences, and he hates fingers, my phone and anything to do with them, bites painfully through the shirt and you may even bleed underneath, but loves attention and wants affection too (just not from fingers or hands) ... I am glad I saw your video before taking on such a huge commitment and responsibility, that I don't have a space for nor the time for ... taking in small parrots is fine-ish but I should never think of getting a parrot unless I have a private house with a garden I guess. thank you for everything. Even with all the intense care and behaviour I still want a Macaw, but can't do anything about it now I'd feel awful keeping such a large bird in a cage when I can't be around due to work.

Everything you said is so true. I have a noble macaw and she needs to be up my butt all day from the time she wakes up until she goes to sleep. My bird does what she wants and expects me to be on standby for her all day. She is messy, loud and bites me when I preen her and one minute she loves it then she decides she doesn’t like it then presses me for more pets lol. I have to take my macaw everywhere with me or she gets so angry at me. Her squawk is so loud my neighbors can hear her from in the house. But unfortunately my noble macaw is the smallest macaw of them all so I can’t bring her outside for too long because there are giant hawks where I live. But yes everything you said about the hyacinth macaw rings true for most macaws especially my baby kiwi. Anyone who says otherwise has not owned a macaw lol Btw your birdie babies are sooo beautiful!

The most important thing is, that despite them having you they need to have a partner, and that also makes the burden of having to be there for them all time much easier for you, bit i think that this video is for educational purposes and I saw another hyacinth macaw by the end of the video. Then you're doing it right and teaching right, instead of one thing: I'd point out, that it helps a lot to get them a partner, that actually it should be ONLY that way. One of them alone ain't enough, coz they're born to be with each other, even despite our 24//7 presence, that's very difficult to put into practice

This video is not an exaggeration. I have an African Grey and this all goes for them as well. My grey is with me on my shoulder 12 hours a day. When I have to go out for a large amount of time I have a sitter for her. I tried out so many sitters before I found one that actually CARED about my bird. It isn't that easy. If my bird is awake she does not want to be alone, or in her cage.She is very sensitive and wants love, love, love, and more love. When she misbehaves (and she does) you cannot hold a grudge or else you will have a very depressed bird. Then there is hormone season. All of that sweetness, is gone, and you wonder if it will E V E R return. You need to have thick skin and you need to be very empathetic and forgiving and YES they will bite you.

Dear, great video. Everyone interested in Macaws even the smaller species should reconsider. They are very much time demanding and destructive to house and a mess that one has to constantly clean up behind, be it debris from their powerful mandibles tearing your home or its belongs to pieces and or all the poop and food scrapes. I do not recommend anyone buy a Macaw or Cockatoo if you have more than one human child. Better ) Human Kids. One needs to be totally dedicated to these demanding attention birds. Butters my beloved Blue and Gold is now 25 years old and I could never have given him the love if I had human children. He is like caring for two kids constantly. We have the perfect setting as we are childless and run a Native Plant Botanical Garden where Butters has free roaming outside all day almost every day with visiting customers which help entertain him and truly help satisfy his desire for enrichment. If you are a giving and caring individual, yes you will get the special love back from your bird. Most people treat them as ornaments and this is very cruel to isolate them alone. Butters has been a full member of the family and watches movies and documentaries we us in bed. If one is not willing to put in the work as you suggest do not get Macaw rather they should stick a cat.

Had a Grey Jaco im me young days or more correct babysitting it. I'm also used to dogs and cats (mean also get along and train/control them). FYI I'm, a male and the parrot was female and 11 years old and in eggzellent shape. Wingclipped just a little (the "carrying inside feathers" on left cut) so struggle do real flying but no hinder for move around in my then tiny apartment that also joused my FEMALE gf. Let me sum it up. 1. It took me 2 moths just get friendly 2. 1/2 a year be buddies 3. She never accepted my gf (or any female) since they all were "rivals" 4. The crave for attention is real and IF not get, they will shatter your ears full. 5. You need +1 year to get "knit". After that, as long it is only YOU AND THE DANG PARROT all is fine... can even be obedient. 6. Unwanted behavior is treated easy nuff. Just scuff em off or leave in the instant it happens. I.e. shit on your shoulder. 7. If it bite? Bite back but sure not clip limbs etc. They have a purrfect control over their beak. 8. They can pout for days. 9. Don't close their cage door. It's their "safety home". Don't reach in exept if they are out and it's for cleaning. Beckon them out, if not come leave em be. 10. If it's nite and lights out show it. Shut off the lights, put a blanket cover 3/4 of the cage and say politely "good night". 11. Make sure it can join you on the sholder when driving car or shopping in the supermarket. They love that. BE A PART! If not they get NOISY and stress. :) (I love her and we're confident but she will never love my GFs... -.-)

Aren’t they extinct now or is that another bird

Hyacinth macaws are not extinct in thr wild, spix's macaws are.

There is a lot of disinformation in this video. They are fine in the cage, and will adjust to a schedule of when they get attention and when they play in their cage alone with all their toys. They don’t need all your time, that is simply not true.

I’m really sad how they are extinct in the wildlife :(
@ShadowFerretofD00m3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think they are. It’s the other blue parrot that’s extinct in the wild. I forget what it’s called but it’s the more powder blue one that’s extinct.

If you have a 9 to 5 job, don't get a bird period. I'm a nurse, I wish I could get a parrot again :( Cheers from France everyone !

One more reason not to get one: it's a lifelong commitment and they live a very long time.

some people let you take your bird on a plane so if you have money you can do it

imagine searching for an information video on a certain pet and actually getting a video that doesn’t immediately say “DONT BUY ONE!” - i’ve searched hyacinth macaw, macaw, cockatoo, raven, and literally ALL of them immediately say DONT BUY ONE. Here is a thought, maybe provide the information we’re requesting without biased presumptive titles assuming that EVERYONE searching for information on them are incapable of doing so. On top of it showing of the very pet were interested in while trying to say “do as i say, not as i do” - ultimate cringe

Whenever i see a video with a title of reasons of why you should not buy a “pet” i feel that the person talking just doesn’t want the others to have the same pet they own 😂😂😂

I though that too in the beginning. But now i have a macaw and its not for everyone

20minutes is a day is way way way too little. Poor baby is probably sufferring. Close to 24hrs a day of sitting idle is torture.
