My theory is that Angelina knew that microphone would explode if it got the full impact of her dynamic vocals, so she turned it around to spare its life.

If you have people listen to it, there is no way they are saying 'Oh this is a (1) 12 year old (2) sitting on a sofa (3) in a living room (4) having the microphone turned around singing this in (5) one raw take.' This mic that she got for her 12th Birthday from her family is a Neumann TLM 102, not a 103. She upgraded to a 103 when she was 15 & she used it in her covers of Billie Jean & Yesterday in those monochromatic studios. Great reaction, she is the best I've ever seen/heard, now that she is 16. Hope you don't mind Peter. My comment keeps disappearing and I want him to see my comment. I can't figure out why it just keeps disappearing. So here it is. I am so happy you have followed up on my initial plea with you to check this girl out. I think you are starting to realize what I was trying to convey to you in my comments about this incredible talented and compassionate young girl. She has the ability to change lives as I know she has changed mine. You trusted me once so i'm hoping you will trust me again. Your next reaction has to be 'I Put a Spell On YOu' by Screamin Jay Hawkins 1956. Angelina goes full Beast Mode and I believe this this will go down in Music and Jazz History as the most epic performance of a 9 year old in Music History. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKipnaJ5hb2tedU The Angelina fans will be begging for this one next anyway. Be prepared (if anyone can be) for the most amazing performance you have ever seen. Then to get a true sense of the beauty of Angelina's voice from a young age please do this one. The world is endless. It's like, full of happiness. I love it. It's amazing. And when I am on stage, I don't want to go [leave the stage]. [laughing]. I just want to be on stage" A snippet of Skaylan’s interview of Angelina Jordan (age 12) on Norwegian TV - November 2018 ♥👣 Never have I seen Angelina go so deeply into this world as she does here. Herr Stadlmeier, hallo aus Schwaben. Die Höflichkeit gebietet, die Fortsetzung in English. You are absolutly correct. Some commenter who knows this mic, said, turning it around makes it sound old-fashioned like the 50s-60s, you can bet on it there was a "how to use this mic" from Germany in English, Norwegian etc.

@@elmarwinkler6335 You both are correct but as far as I know this is the earliest upload using this mic so Angelina might just be showing off her new Birthday present or has made a genuine mistake. Another notible thing is this upload is the only one that needed sound enhancement using this mic. I'm just saying without her input on the reason of a backward facing mic no one really knows why. Its still an amazing vocal performance though.

As she got this mic for her 12th birthday, it was her wish, as I understand it. You can bet on it, she read the instructions. No problems in reading, as she speaks fluently 5 languages. She KNEW she had to be careful with this expensive mic, as she has a VERY strong voice, turning the mic had the side effect of her sounding like in the 50s-60s. GRIN, you don´t want to sit near a vocalist with classic vocal training. And yes, I know, some troll think it almost blasphemy to suggest she had such training. SHE HAD. Mostly AJ is a very quiet young lady, BUT she can sing your eardrums out. You, sir, stay safe and sound, PEACE. German Greetings.

I liked one of your first comments when Angelina just started-saying that a rasp was trying to “peek in” because we were all waiting for her to really get into it. She is like no one else. I like to say that Angelina inhabits genres. You’ll see how completely and authentically she can give us perfect blues, soul, jazz, r&b, ballads and other genres. It’s one thing to have the gift of a truly unique voice, but it’s clear that Angelina has studied the greats and learned the essence of the genres she gives us. Yes-you have to watch the most amazing music video you might ever see with Angelina at nine years old showing everyone how old school blues should sound on her own arrangement of I Put a Spell on You with a live jazz band behind her. She absolutely kills it, and all you can do is realize that you’re hearing talent that’s once in a lifetime.

What you are witnessing is the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices as she is known. Angelina has the ability to adjust the tone, style, register, even accent of her voice depending upon the song, the artist, and the genre she is covering. Every song can sound different, and even as you say, parts of songs can sound different. This is one of Angelina's unique gifts. Thank you for your thorough and knowledgeable reaction. You are very enjoyable to listen to and provide insightful perspectives on Angelina and her vocals. Angelina's family has supported her all along the way since she was a toddler and has given her every opportunity she could want. But she has chosen her own path and has not been forced. She was exposed to the classics when she was a toddler and she continued to immerse herself in jazz, and Blues and other classic music throughout her young career. The reason she has not blown up even larger at this point is that her family decided to not have Republic records promote her until she graduates high school so she can have a normal childhood. Too many young artists have been ruined by being forced and stressed too young. I think her family made the right decision.

That ear for details, she got it at least since age of 7. People noted she even made sure to replicate the vibrato style of the era she's covering. So you say its a mistake, she should have read the mic manual😉? Hm, maybe. In all other vids she did orientate the mic the "right" way. BTW If you're eager for the Neuman, the TLM 103 sells for 1000€ in german online shops - might be an option.

"Sound Enhanced" in this case means pre-recorded. Still Angelina, but her voice was recorded prior to the video. If you watch carefully, you can see her mouth movements not match up to the audio. Several of her videos were produced in this way, notably her Whitney Houston tribute, I Have Nothing. Vocal coach and reactor Jennifer Glatzhofer pointed this out while reacting to I'd Rather Go Blind, confirming a suspicion I've had for a while about it. I've heard that she's a perfectionist, and I can relate. Her talent is the real deal; I don't mind her doing some perfectly normal production on a few videos.

It's possible that several of her performances have sound enhanced, but that image and sound are recorded separately, it's an issue that I'm not very clear about, in this song and especially in 'I have nothing', if this were true, in addition to being an exceptional singer, she would be the best voice actress in the world. I'm not a music producer and I don't know the difference between a pre-recorded and a mismatch in the montage between image and sound, but I agree with you in your final sentence, there are enough live concerts to not doubt her enormous talent.

I borrowed this mic and did a walk through of it but now I’m thinking I wanna change it and maybe show y’all how studio tracking goes. I think I touched on it in this video, but most of the time it’s done chunk by chunk just for breath and to make sure everything is perfect - typically you don’t want to push a voice for longer than about 30 mins or so at a time. Now I don’t know her setup or recording preferences, and she very welll could 1 take the recording, but just for the sake of it it’s recorded to the audio program, then she will sing along with it for the camera but use the pre recorded audio. I’m not as talented as her, so it’s much more obvious in my videos if you want to watch my cover of ‘Where would I be?’ I don’t mean to shamelessly plug it, but you can hear in the third hook how I obviously came in with a fresh breath in the recording but in the video it’s just a smooth transition, and I miss a few queues in the last verse. If you have headphones you can hear the sensitivity and response of the microphone as well, it’s the same as Angelina’s

BEL, Absolutely fascinating. I have watched many, many Angelina reactions, but your acuity in distinguishing the nuances of sound equipment is something I've never seen before. And, your vocal experience integrated with that adds another dimension. Super. The one question I had that you didn't get to (Hopefully, you'll respond with your opinion.) is, "Was Angelina singing into the back of the mic intentional?" Was it a (audio) stylistic choice on her part? My guess is that it was, but I don't have the audio expertise to make that more than a guess. The reason I (currently) believe singing into the back of the mic was on purpose is because Angelina's sense of hearing is so acute. Angelina also had years of experience with microphones, having first stepped into a recording studio half a lifetime earlier at age six.🙂 I also believe Angelina could echo-locate her way through a mine field, blind folded, in pitch black darkness. Everything you pointed out about how the backwards mic responded to her voice she could also have perceived. (I had no clue until you explained it.) This performance strikes me as a study in "vocal fry" (rasp and growl). Big dynamic range in it, as well. So, how do you think this track would have come out if Angelina had sung into the front of the mic? Pluses and minus vis-a-vis singing into the back of it as she did? Also note that the mic is hand held, which may have made a pop filter unmanageable. Could that have been the deciding factor? BTW, my understanding is that the mic here is the less expensive TLM-102. ($600 - $700) I believe the 102 is narrower that than 103, so maybe its size relative to Angelina's hand may provide a visual clue to confirm the mic choice on this video. You may want to verify which mic, exactly, before doing more field work on this performance. Bueno, gracias.

Thank you for your very informative reaction. Angelina has always been given the opportunity to perform with the best bands an equipment, this probably due to her grandmother Mery Zamani aka Mosarz world renowned poet and artist, the band she hired for the recording of I put a spell on you was stellar as was the orchestra KORK she hired to record back to black, her two guitarist that she uses in a lot of her home videos are very good, now that she has signed with Republic Records she performs with a Grammy winning pianist. I knew when she was traveling the world doing charity concerts and shows she carried a tutor with her, I’ve been following her for almost 4 years know and until someone mentioned in your comments that she also has a voice coach in all the videos I’ve seen and she has never mentioned a voice coach, but it makes sense that she would have. She’s a very talented young lady, and we as fans are fortunate to see her grow and improve over the years. Unlike most young artist her parents could and did turn down many lucrative offers for her to sign including Disney, they finally allowed her to sign with the understanding that education comes first.

that break you were talking about .. she totally knows what she's doing. It is amazing the control she has over that kind of detail. The more you see her the more you will know this is so. I do think this mic is totally perfect for this song .. especially.

People have commented on the mic being backwards. Possibly implying that Angelina didn't know this. Angelina does nothing by accident. She probably had a reason WHY she used this mic backwards!! I also believe that this mic was given to her 4 her 13th birthday.

Total control of her breath, tone, head-, chest- and mixed voice..and her fry. She can sing like butter with straight tones, or channel the jazz/blues/r&b greats with the most controlled fry out there.

Lovely reaction, thanks so much for sharing! 🌹 I wonder if she turned the mic around to get a sound that is closer to what it would be on the original recording, back in the day, when the equipment wasnt as advanced as it is today? If you hear a 'cut' in the singing, it were well might be. This and several other videos have 2 or more audio tracks. If you look closely at the long belt at the end, when she sings 'boy' she doesnt close her lips to make the b-sound. Everyone who has worked with her says that she nails most recordings in one or two goes, even if she doesnt know the songs by heart. So I dont think she needs to make several audio tracks, but I think her 'advanced musical ears' (is that a word?) choses to, so the final product sounds even better 💖

If this was her first or an early recording with the mic then absolutely. The shock mount system it comes with is wild and awkward, and you almost have to develop a relationship with the mic before you get real comfortable with it. Spinning it around would mitigate some of those growing pains real quick and also lend a toast to the original sound

Great reaction, commentaries and explanations of how a mic works. Very much appreciated. I also heard the 2 tones that remind me of a polyphonic ability that another young prodigy uses as well as subharmonics. Diana Ankudinova is a very rare voice type being considered a dramatic contralto with polyphonic and subharmonic abilities. “Wicked Game” at age just turned 15 on a Russian talent show (you will possibly have to blur or put something over to get through now), “You are Super”. It’s a talent show for young orphans or other children who have had difficulty in their lives. Angelina also does a superb cover of “Wicked Game” as well. It would be lovely if a comparison and commentaries could be done for these together. Angelina is, I believe playing the piano at about this same age (13, I believe). Totally unique prodigies but both are mesmerizing and superb people with amazing families. (Diana was adopted after being taken away from abuse by her mother). It’s a sad story with hopefully a happy ending. Angelina’s family are extraordinary as well. Please enjoy whenever you can and much love and appreciation from California.❤️🕊🌈🍀😇🙏❣️

Another voice you should NOT miss is that of the "Queen of Goosebumps", Russian teen Diana (dee-AH-na) Ankudinova (an-ku-DEE-no-vah). Her voice is totally unique and she has masterful stage presence living the music. The best intro to her is probably her "Wicked Game" cover. Just make sure you are seated first.

So when I tried this mic, I plugged it in to my regular set up, put my headphones on and immediately went ‘woah’ haha it was so crisp and clear. If I was holding the microphone in my hand, and didn’t have previous experience with the mic, I think I would have immediately span it around, said test test and go ‘oh this sounds right’ It’s like bob ross says, no mistakes, just happy accidents. That’s my take on it at least. My first microphone that had a shape like this I returned twice because I thought it was broken, but I was singing in to it backwards

Great reaction. You're right about SEO implications in your reaction notes -- you came up in my feed today. Just subbed. You have a great ear, and your comments about AJ's vocal fry as almost a second "tone" to the pitch is really interesting. If you want to get blown away, listen to AJ's cover of Summertime on NGT at 8, and her cover of Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT at 13. And then, of course, everything else . . . .

Why Does Angelina Jordan Perform Barefoot? When Angelina was 6 years old, she met a homeless girl around her age in Iran. (Her grandmother is Iranian artist Mery Zamani.) The girl did not have any shoes, and Angelina says her feet were scarred. Angelina gave the girl her own shoes. And Angelina said she never wears shoes on stage to all children have shoes!

Sweet reaction... Angelina experiments so often that I wonder if she tried the microphone frontwards and backwards. Is it possible that the "flatter" restricted effect is to give homage to the 1960's recording of the original?

After seeing this about 50 times, I had a thought about why the mic is backwards. Try this scenario - brand new mic and she is dying to try it out. I don't know what she's using for a mixing board, but would guess it doesn't have any built in padding. She tests the setup with this tune, and realizes she's overloading the input. So what can she do to get this recording out? Being the pro that she is, she turns the cardoid mic around and the distortion and overload is a lot less. I would expect that the next day she got a 10db inline pad.

I've watched at least 2 videos of yours reacting to Angelina and mentioning vowels, and I thought you might find it interesting to know that the Norwegian language has 3 extra vowels compared to the English/American langauges (I put in both since their vowels are different to some extent). Some of the things you have remarked on sounds to me like she is utilising those vowels to move from different sounds , and that the control over those movements are natural to some that have those 3 vowels in their repertoire, as well as having had singing lessons. I'm not taking anything away from her genius, I just wanted to mention this since you've mentioned vowels.

Just so you know there is a good probability that this specific presentation was lipsync To a final prerecorded track, Answer wearing this headphones here as well. If you look closely there are some clues.... She probably truly is singing along here because it is safe quite well, But it is probably not the audio of her on that couch that Video capture.,,, Probably done earlier in the day and possibly more than one take. .... And possibly spoiced or produced, Is impart or in whole.
