I was a Whitney fan from the beginning of her career to her tragic end. Whitney was great, but Angelina at 16 is far better than Whitney ever was at making you feel each word, and phrase. AJ changes every cover to make it hers and far, far better than the original. AJ is the greatest STORYTELLING ARTEST I have ever experienced in my 75 years.
@PhilipKnopp2 жыл бұрын
I'll second your opinion, every last word, and I am 79 years old. Angelina has renewed, revived, restored so many classics in ways that are for lack of a word--magical. As for Whitney, I have always been impressed by her range and technical skill, but Angelina has already surpassed Whitney in evoking emotion and, as you say, in "storytelling"!

One of the many things that makes Angelina so great is that she doesn’t over-sing when you might think there are opportunities for that. She has a talent for selecting the style to deliver a song, and she stays true to that. The arrangement she chooses dictates her vocals, not the opportunities to show what she can do. She has so much ammunition in her vocal toolbox that she nails many different genres authentically and effortlessly. As some other commenters have suggested, watch Suspicious Minds. I’ve heard some reactors say they thought Angelina was going to really open up vocally at some point in this song, but she stays in the unique, nearly-somber vibe she creates, and like many of her performances, it’s mesmerizing. It’s a masterpiece in vocal restraint that again takes an iconic song, turns it on its head, and gives me the best version that I’ve ever heard.

She changed the key to this song, but does it really matter as long as she has the ability to give each word, or phrase, meaning like no one else in this universe can. How can she evoke such emotion in each and every performance? Why do I get chills, or cry tears, or lose my breath when Angelina sing a song that I have experienced many times in the past without this happening? If this feeling only happened to me that would be ok, but it happens to billions of people. We play these videos of AJ over, and over again to get our high.

Thanks a lot, Chris, for this amazing reaction. It is always so nice to hear a person with knowledge like yourself react to Angelina. Truth be told, the more knowledge and experience (vocal coaches, performance coaches and singers) the reactors have, the more blown away they are. And as I have been on your tail since day ONE, trying to convince you just HOW amazing she is, you already know what I personally think of her...😂😅♥🔥 I just have to say, Chris, That I REALLY treasure your every reaction to her, and I just pray that you will soon find the time to react to some more to her. When you do, there is one song in particular that I think you should consider, namely her cover of "Suspicious Minds", made popular by Elvis. She completely reconstructs the song, starting off with the bridge and what not, completely making it her own, in true Angelina style. And her vocals in that one is just off the charts strong,soft, rich and beautiful. It is a MUST listen for sure. You even get music video to go with it 🙂 Here is the link : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIXFfJuhmMqFZpI Lastly, what do you think of the visuals in her videos? Nothing extremely costly, no effects, no pimping whatsoever. Just beauty. I look at them as true pimp slaps in the face of the music industry, just proving that if you have the abilities, no such stuff is really necessary. She lets her voice and her ability to emote do the talking (or singing, rather). And I think you are right in that there is no auto-tune here. At least to MY knowledge, that is something she has never used. Listen to her live performances and you will understand why that is. I got to see her live here in Norway on July 10th, and she made it abundantly clear for 85 minutes straight, with no breaks in between, that no such thing is needed 😉 Before I go for REAL tho, I have to give you a link to her opening performance on her concerts at Kongsberg Jazz Festival on July 7th and the one I attended on July 10th. It is a completely new style of music for her, at least that her fans have heard, and she caught all of us completely off guard. She covered "Mount Everest" by Labrinth. I don't like the original very much, but again Angelina completely changed it into something amazingly great. Now her fans just HAVE to wonder if that song is a sign of waht's about to come in her upcoming album next year😂 Here is the link to that one as well : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGqkqoOAaNWCqtE The video was recorded and uploaded by one of her biggest fans, a man from Hawaii called Chris Walker. He has his own channel dedicated to Angelina, called BigAngieFan 🙂 You get a nice little introduction to the venue, and you also get to hear Angelina's speaking voice for a minute at the very end. Should be interesting for YOU as well I think and hope. And no filter needed for that one, which is always a big plus, right ? I could easily go on for a week, rambling on about her, but I'll leave you now 😊 Much love from your Pal Al ♥♥♥♥♥♥

@@poolhallshark I've made myself somewhat unpopular for suggesting that too often. I'm told "My comment gets deleted if I include a link." or "Why didn't you just include the link for me instead of wasting time telling me to do it?" or "The reactors can look up the links just fine." Personally, I think it's very inconsiderate not to include a link with a request. I've noticed some reactors now require a link be included for the request to be considered. That's the way it should be. This content is free and these reactions take much more time and effort to create than we expend enjoying them. I used to comment about that in replies to comments requesting a reaction w/o including a link. I've learned they aren't worth replying to. I would rather show appreciation for people like you. I think the genius thing about Angelina's approach to this song is that she takes some of the heat out of Whitney's version and it comes across as a more mature song. I think they might have put auto-cry on her performances because they always bring a tear to my eye, and I've never ever heard any other singer who could do that. Maybe Judy Garland sometimes but Angelina goes right to my emotions EVERY time and I don't know how she does it. I sing and I've listened carefully to all the greats, Ray Charles, Aretha, Streisand, Ella, Elvis, Armstrong, Holliday you name 'em and while they give masterful performances, none of them pulls at my heartstrings as effortlessly as she does. Don't get me wrong this will always be Houston's song, but she was a long ball hitter whereas Angelina has a more personal take on the song. I think that restraint lets the beauty of the song itself shine through. After all the songwriter and the song is the foundation on which all great vocal performances are built.

Other than for a few tributes, Angelina reinterprets songs the way she feels them. Some people can't handle her not copying songs exactly and unfairly criticize her. Anglina has a jazz background and most of her performances reflect this. Being slightly behind slightly behind or in front of the music, using different phrasing, you name it. She has been a master of this since her very early years. Before age 9, she proved she could copy exactly, adding little personal touches. By the age of 10, she started performing more varied interpretations. Her recent live concerts in Norway show she can perform live as good as in a studio. She is amazing!

By omitting the consonants from the end of some words allows her to keep the airflow for her voice instead of ending and starting up again. Sometimes you'll hear "Whaa" instead of "What" or "Walk". The 'T' or 'K' at the end would shut off the sound and the tongue would close off the airflow. Omitting the consonant leaves her throat open and the air keeps flowing over her vocal cords.

To answer your question, nope Angelina doesn't need auto-tune. You can see in one of the longer versions of her portrait of a child video, that she notices when she is a bit flat compared to the instruments. And in that one I just referenced, I wouldn't be surprised if the instruments were slightly Sharp and she was actually right on key. Anyway so back to your point, yeah she always sings without Auto-Tune because she has the music i playing in her head, with whatever changes she feels should be there, so she doesn't need auto-tune.

Part if not all of the variations in enunciation are meant to support the vocal performance. Voice teachers tend to commend her for it; musicians tend to complain. I'm neither and I love it. The lyrics are perfectly understandable.

It’s more difficult to sing the lowest notes and requires more breath control that’s what Angelina does best she is a musical genius, Angelina always takes a song and makes it her own, she has been doing that since was 7 years old!

You can hear her during the Norway concerts in July she did this one back to back because the winds was so bad first time.

Jazz term "back phrasing". She did it at the start of the 12 year old version. She isn't "Off Beat". It's intentional. She also dropped the key slightly. I Love the way she says "walk". Enjoy your reactions.

He only meant intentional offbeat, when he said ‘offbeat’. Cheers.

Hey Chris, Glad to see you again! Yes I agree, this was a very different and more soulful rendition than the one she did at 12/13. You should check out her live performances in Norway of this song as well. She released those before she dropped this one. Again, a slightly different feel but the same magic. It's all about the way she makes you feel. From the comments one reads, yes, people feel uplifted, cathartic, warm, peaceful, all of those things. So I have a theory: when you put 3,000 people into a room to hear Angelina sing, there are 3,000 versions of that song. What people call storytelling? she singing to YOU. Not the person in the chair next to yours, not the person seated two rows behind you, but to YOU. That's what's extraordinary about Angelina. Thank you! By the way, Chris, what does your wife think of this version? I recall the first time after you finished your reaction you were going to grab her and make her listen. This time? Would be good to know 😁

Going back to what may be her first visit to a recording studio this is Angelina AT SIX YEARS OF AGE. It shows that she is a six-year-old but watch what happens when she goes into singing mode. Then she shows that she hit the sections that she wanted to and then when the music stops, she comes back to age 6 and starts to analyze her error. Imagine doing this song at six and knocking out of the park on THE FIRST TAKE?? AT 6 kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJu0i354pbuUm9U

It’s never been stated, but I believe Angelina has perfect pitch. There are too many riffs, complicated lines where she is singing with perfect intonation! I’d be curious as a composer-pianist to know if I’m correct!

It took me awhile to like AJ. She was really brilliant as a early teen, but then I thought she cackled and her enunciation wasn't the best, and her tik toks, phew, but Suspicious Minds changed that for me and also this song at her concert, where she wore that nice blue dress and should have clipped her hair back!!!! Now, I ignore the not so good because I know what she is capable of. And with only a handful of singers I think are the best ever, I give AJ the edge because of her age. Personally, I just don't get why grown men cry, come on man, she's good but to cry? Lol. I will never understand the obsession. With this said, Whitney, omg, the voice. Tbh, I think AJ has a better tone than WH AT 16, but what WH had, since she was a little girl, was perfect diction. Also when Whitney belts, she doesn't just hit the note, she conquered it. And certainly, listen to Whitney, and please, people that say AJ has that kind-of power, I'm sorry, that's just absurd. As a Whitney fan (and I've been listening to her all day), I guess the Lord Giveth and also taketh away, but while I'm willing to say AJ is spectacular at 16, until she can sing like Whitney oh, let's say at her concert at Wimbley stadium in 1988, then WH is still the voice. If AJ can sing like THAT in 9 years, I will personally come back and say, yes, AJ is the best ever.
