This is why she sang in such a restrained tone. From the committee's press release: "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2023 to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all. Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Ms. Mohammadi is still in prison." What makes this song so meaningful is, Unchained Melody was written about a prisoner longing to be reunited with a loved one. And her husband and children were there to receive the honor on her behalf.

This was one of the latest recordings,with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, for the Nobel Peace price for Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist and Nobel laureate. She is the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, headed by her fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Shirin Ebadi.The freedom struggle cost her dearly. She was arrested 13 times and sentenced to 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. In October 2023, when her selection as the Nobel Peace Prize laureate was announced, she was locked in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. Fuck it, how can men be so evil.

Angelina did indeed give this performance an extra helping of reverence and emotion, because it wasn't about her, it was about Narges. BTW Narges children were sitting directly in front of her while she sang (they have not seen their mother in over 9 years). To me that gives this song a whole different meaning. In 2014, a little Norwegian girl was named and codified, a national treasure by both the King of Norway and the prime Minister. That same year, she sang for the Nobel peace prize winners all at the age of 8. In 2023, that same girl, now almost 18 once again graced the Nobel peace prize stage and sang for the recipient once again. That young girl is none other than Angelina Jordan. Angelina Jordan made history with this performance. Angelina is the only solo singer under the age of 18 to have performed twice at the Nobel peace prize concert. When I learned the story of Narges Mohammadi, this years recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the history of the song "Unchained Melody", I fully understood why Angelina Jordan chose this song. P.S.: Angelina arranged the music and vocals for this performance. She thanked the director of KORK publicly for allowing her to do this.

And let’s not forget Angelina’s Iranian heritage and Oslo is her hometown! Third time with KORK, she did Back to Black and Summertime when she was 10! Has been invited twice to Nobel Peace Prize, previously appeared when she was eight! She has brought grace and elegance back to the stage! Narges is in jail for leading the fight for women’s rights in Iran! At the end Angelina puts her hand over her heart acknowledging Narges children who were on stage and happen to be Angelina’s age and are living in exile in France! Debbie, sorry you couldn't sleep but we benefited with your reaction. Once you understand the background for this performance, it takes it to a much higher level of emotion. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges was, at the time of this tribute, on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian. We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family. I hope all the angels will spread the story of Narges and her mission, with the hope for change. In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". "Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release.

She was intentionally holding back to express the longing of a mother for her children. The recipient of the Peace Prize is Narges Mohammadi. She is in prison in Iran. Her twin children (the same age as Angelina) accepted the prize on her behalf. Angelina took it upon herself to express the longing of a mother for her children. The original song was written for a movie about a man in prison. At the end when you paused it Angelina looked at the children and put her hand over her heart. Her heart is as big as her talent. The song comes from the 1956 Movie "Unchained" about incarcerated prisoners longing to be with their families. This fully represents Narges Mohammadi who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She is imprisoned by the barbaric Iranian regime for standing up for women's rights and equality. Her 2 children, around Angelina's age, were in attendance here to except the award on Narges behalf and are in the audience. This took place at the Town Hall in Oslo Norway, Angelina's home town.
