My favorite is when hiccup close his eyes, 'Cause he's scared to be this close to a dragon, but he swallows his fear and go on, toothless notice his fear and chose to let him touch his nose It's such a poetic scene, the first friendly contact between two species that were suppose to hate each other, It takes place in ancient times but I feel it is SO ahead of so many people in our time

Fun facts: Hiccup is also left handed in the books. He was probably one of the few if not the only left handed person in the village because it didn't seem like anyone knew. They all just thought he sucked at swordsmanship until he tried it with his left hand and became one of the best. Hiccup learns to speak to dragons in the books too but I think the way he communicates despite the language barrier in the movies and tv series is better in my opinion.

@@chocolatbownie35 I grew up on these beautiful, wonderful books by Cressida Cowell that tell the most amazing story and for that reason and many more I will love the books more than the films always, and the films set an incredibly high bar. A few words tho, going from films to books would be quite jarring, they train hunting dragons, about the size of a big dog, and dont get onto riding dragons till about book 5or6 (cant remember 100% its been a long time since I read them) It might be a bit of putting at first but if you truly value a great story and character dev stick with it. There are so many brilliant references to the books in the films and even some straight plot point lifts that are wonderful payoffs for the original book fans. Sorry for the long comment but ive been wanting to say something like this for so long on basically all the dragons reviews on YT, everyone who reviews these films either don't know or forget about the books and some things they criticise about the films are brilliant references to the films

I know it’s hard to say a character as prominent as Stoick is underrated, but he’s a character I can’t get enough of. He’s so complex, he genuinely loves his son and his people but he just has a hard time figuring out how to be a good father and balance that with chiefdom. He reminds me a lot of a Viking version of King Triton. And the sequel? He gets the best scenes of it.

elephants is always the answer for large animals/creatures in movies because elephants are very loud and they can make super low frequency sounds that reverberate through the body so it adds a lot of depth and sense of power to a creature if you mix in some elephant sounds. For example most dinosaur sounds in movies and tv use elephants in the sound mix

A lots of people hates on Astrid and the others for how they treated Hiccup before he became good at dragon training but they had every right to hate him. The fans seems to forgot the fact despite his good intentions Hiccup did destroy the village more than a few times. He endangered them. And he was their next chief. A boy who didn’t take anything seriously, couldn’t fight, can’t follow direct orders and caused trouble every time he stepped outside was suppose to lead them, not only in everyday life but in a war against fucking fire breathing reptiles! And of course they started to like him when he became good at dragon training. As Hiccup said in the beginning of the movie, dragon killing was everything in there, because their lifes depended on it. Dragons attacked. They were forced to but that doesn’t matter. They were attacking them. It’s obvious they would defend themselves. Now when Stoick disowned Hiccup. Everybody says or do things they didn’t really mean when they are angry. It was not only about Hiccup lying, but also about denying his own people. When he dropped his helmet and said he wasn’t one of them, he practically disowned himself and since he got the helmet from his mother, he disrespected her memory too. He acted for good reason, but he also betrayed his whole tribe their traditions and history. I would also remind you that neither the Stoick nor the other Vikings saw how Toothless and Hiccup befriended or known that the dragons were to forced to attack them to get food. All they know is that the “unholy offspring of lightning and death” came out of nowhere blasted their arena and started fighting against another deadly fire breathing killing machine and that he was dangerous, so they need to protect their loved ones. In their eyes, dragons were still cruel, killing machines who had attacked them for centuries, burning their homes, wounding and killing their loved ones. Just as Stoick’s wife, Valka, was abducted by a dragon next to her a couple of months old baby, or as Gobber's hand and foot were bitten and not so long ago they wanted to kill Hiccup. All they could do all their lives was to kill or die, and they had been raised to do that since they were children.

And indeed it is! This comment is so good that just my respect! And I agree with everything you said. I've only recently started reading the books, although I've been a fan for a long time, and the attitude towards hiccup is shown quite well, especially in the first book. This is my favorite animated movie and my second favorite movie of all time. It's just so amazing and has such beautiful animation, beautiful writing, fantastic sound design, a phenomenal soundtrack, great characters and arcs, incredible world building, just so many amazing and dare I say realistic mannerisms and movements put into the dragons. I love how cat-like some of the dragons are. The sound design is what really just sends me over the moon. I absolutely love the various vocalizations of the creatures, particularly those awesome night fury roars (and the skrill from the series, which is one of my favorite dragons), snarls, little guttural purr-like noises, the lightning/fire blasts, smoke, wing-beats, breathing, the sound of feet or claws or a tail dragging, and of course environmental sounds. Everything just sounds so natural and incredible and flows together perfectly with the animation and voice acting. I love how every dragon is unique, both is physical appearance, personality, and in the different sounds they make (varying from species to species), and being a descendant of vikings myself, the story and world building was just plain fun. I felt like I could be in a story like that, only I'm small and have floppy noodle arms, like Hiccup, so I'd have to figure out how to use things and the environment to my advantage.

I’m late I know. A couple of interesting facts about the movie: 1) A lot of of the choreography of Toothless came from the movements of cats. 2) Toothless’ “roars” are many animals: horse, elephant, etc. 3) Each main character actually has a theme song. In the beginning you hear Hiccup’s. You also hear Stoik’s. You don’t hear Toothless’ in first scene when he fired at Berk because he’s an unknown character to the movie, but in the scene where Hiccup cuts Toothless free, you’ll hear a melody that consists of bag pipes and this is Toothless’ theme. During the scene ‘Test Drive’, you can here Toothless’ and Hiccup’s theme combined and that becomes the main melody of the whole franchise. 3.5) you also hear Astrid’s theme in the beginning when she is introduced. You also hear it in the scene Romantic Flight. That whole song is pretty much her theme. 👍

Fun fact: dragons get really sick when they eat eels and it's very dangerous, that's why they're afraid of them, there's an episode in one of the shows where Toothless accidently eats one.

12:20 Maybe the left side thing is a world-building tool... for instance, it's just their superstition. Like- the left side is unlucky. Which would make sense if Hiccup was left handed because they would just consider him unlucky and be even more adverse to and distant with him.

"I'm a Viking, Dad... It's an occupational hazard!" I used that phrase for countless other situations, so seeing my daughter looking at me when Hiccup said that... I was wothin an ace of bawling my eyes out.

I saw this in the theater when it was first released. That was right near the height of the modern 3D movie era, and this is the one non-gimmicky 3D movie I've seen that I think you are missing something if you don't see it in 3D. Mostly for the flying scenes, but also there's basically a cut scene with the Viking fleet crossing the ocean where I thought the 3D version provided a sense of scale that you can't get with 2D. It's still a visually powerful film in 2D, but the 3D was better.

Dude, literally same! The only reason why I watched it in the first place is because my grandma and cousins told me that it was 3D and I never experienced 3D before because it was new ,so I went with them. Little did I know my life was about to change thanks to this movie!

I'm so excited for you to watch the rest bc these are some of my favorite animated movies of all time!! I grew up with this trilogy like I was about 10yo when I saw the first one and I was 19 when the last one came out, I went to see it in theaters and when I tell you I left that room bawling my eyes out lmaooo they're super sweet and fun and exciting and scary and painful and beautiful and yes yes yes the score is glorious!!! it's just so good. also as an animation fan, seeing the development in animation in these movies throughout the course of 10 years was just amazing. love every second of it. hope you enjoy it too!! 💖

yah. story is sooooo well written. so many things so brilliantly set up and paid off. and the music is SHOCKINGLY good... this movie came out the same year as avatar so i saw both in the theater and both movies have a romance riding dragons scenes... this one blew avatar out of the fucking water... and the music played a huge part in that. but also the beauty of the shots in that sequence.... for me, this was like kungfu panda... i was just expecting meh another cartoon... and i was leveled by just how much care and attention they put into every little thing and how amazing the results were. total surprise.

In case it wasn't mentioned in another comment there are two shows! The first one is called Riders of Berk and it takes place right after the first movie. It has two seasons of 13 episodes and you get to see the kids learn and develop along with their dragons. The second show is called Race to the Edge (it's also on Netflix) and they are like 17 or so in it so we see them as riders who have really come into their own and its amazing. If you were to watch the shows you can watch them after the movies but I think the best way is to watch How to Train Your Dragon then Riders of Berk then Race to the Edge and then the second and third movies.
