I was blessed to work with a high schooler with Angelman syndrome; that experience was immeasurable joy.

Yakima Ellison I currently work with a girl who has Angelmen Syndrome and it certainly is a blessing. She is one of the sweetest things ever!

Being a highly-functional autistic man, I used to have special needs classes. In some of these classes, I studied with a girl, (whose name will be kept private) now a woman, who has Angelman syndrome. Every time, I walked into the classroom when she was there, her face just lit up beaming a big smile when she saw me, occasionally followed by an excited giggle. Her precious smile helped me get through some tough days back then. It was a little saddening to know she'll never walk or talk, but what gave me peace is knowing the eternal state of happiness she is always in. Could you imagine how beautiful it must be to not ever know of the world's problems or to not ever know what sadness is? I wish not the condition on anybody, but instead, the infectious and wonderful level of joy that sweet girl feels. Sometimes, being a special needs individual does not mean having a disability, but rather, a different ability. In this awesome girl's case, her ability continues to make others, including myself, smile and be optimistic. One of my favorite things she would often do is hold my hand after I greet her. I know the condition was named after a Doctor, but to my view, they're literally Angels on Earth, shining with the rare ability to spread total positivity. I haven't seen her since I graduated High school in 2015, but I'm still in touch with some of the students and staff who went where I went and those closest to her say she's continuing to make others happy, nearing 25 years of age.

We have created (and are still making) more films in this series to try and offer lots of details about Angelman Syndrome. Hopefully these will be useful for you and your family - take a look at our channel for them all. Also, ASSERT (www.angelmanuk.org) help lots of families with a new diagnosis, please do get in touch if you want to discuss the details of your nephew. Perhaps we will get to meet you and your nephew at the one local events for International Angelman Syndrome Day (IAD)!! Thanks for the support Mark!

Hi Gina, The name formed because Harry Angelman (13 August 1915 - 8 August 1996) was a British consultant paediatrician who identified Angelman Syndrome. Thanks for your question!

I thought it also had something to do with the handflapping. My two kids have autism but the more I find out about this syndrome the more I think my younger son was wrongly diagnosed as he is a very very happy child, he sleeps very little we've had nights where he would sleep less than 30 mins and be up and hyper as ever where as our older boy sleeps fine (well as good as can expected when the little brother is up and about)
