The big issue is that the catcher didn’t run the base runner back far enough to third base. I was always coaches to run the base runner further back to the bag he just came from. Sadly, the catcher made a bunch of mistakes in the clip.

This is almost ENTIRELY the catcher's fault. You can see everything else without much explanation but the go ahead run scoring, he throws too early. He has more room to run him back to third base, and he should know he has no support from the first baseman yet. But he still tosses the ball and the runner darts back to home base with no resistance. The catcher gave up 2nd base, 3rd base, and arguably the go ahead run.

This team needs new management and ownership. Moreno has seen his 10 million dollar investment two decades ago balloon into 2 billion dollars now. There is no excuse for last off-season after Ohtani won MVP and he begged for surrounding talent. Their reasoning was that Trout was back so everything would be fine. The Angels are embarrassing to their fans and baseball!
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to win to be profitable. They’re milking Ohtani’s popularity for every nickel, and it’s a lot of nickels. Ohtani sells jerseys and memorabilia. Ohtani puts butts in seats. His contract is up after this season. He is getting paid +/- $5 million a year. Trout is getting around $35 million a year. ($426 million/12 years) with 9 years to go on his contract. With all his injuries, he’s the biggest cost. Team ownership is more likely thinking about litigation to break the contract, not changing management. I don’t think anyone wants to buy the team with Trout on the payroll. He’s a $300 million liability. He is going to be on and off the IL, mostly on it, for the rest of his career. I bet the Angels find a way to pay him to go away.

Most of this is on the catcher. He is the reason the guy got to second and then stole 3rd on him (and the pitcher), but he has to recognize that 1st baseman is at 1st and the Pitcher is in front of him and neither are behind him covering the plate. He cannot take two steps and get rid of the ball, he needs to at the very least slowly run at the runner and move him back towards third, holding onto the ball giving his guys time to back him up and make the runner commit more to going back to third. He instead takes 2 steps with the ball and gets rid of the ball way faster than he ever should in a rundown. That's all on him. Edit: I posted this before finishing the video. Then the catcher drops the ball on the tag. Idk what his deal is. Too much in his own head about the previous plays, young inexperienced, pressure getting to him, or just lazy and not a very smart IQ player but dam that inning is all on him.
@howardbaxter25142 жыл бұрын
Very true. But, I would say that first run is also on the third baseman. Should have just thrown it to the first baseman instead of to the SS. Had he done so, the first baseman may have been able to beat out the runner to home and make a diving tag.

Agree 100%! That catcher just didn’t have his head in the game. I don’t follow the Angels, but I can assume he’s a good ball player to be playing in the bigs. Maybe just having a terrible inning! He’s the QB, and can see the whole field and everyone else, including the runners. So when he got the ball, after that hot shot up the middle, (a) he should’ve known that his pitcher and 1st baseman were nowhere near backing him up on the run down; (b) he should’ve bought time by holding on to the ball longer and slowly running the runner closer to 3rd (the sprinting 1st baseman was almost at home plate); or (c) he could’ve just eaten the ball, and stayed at home plate. That would’ve loaded the bases, but at least he did his most important job on that play, i.e. protect home plate!

The mistake on the rundown was the catcher throwing the ball to the third baseman too soon. Run him back and make the throw 3/4 of the way to the base he is coming from and throw at the half way point when advancing to the next base. Additionally you don’t want the third baseman stepping in front of the bag and shortening the base path for that same reason. You want the player covering home to step in front and cut the baseline down on his way back to third. Make his path home longer than his path back to third. Obviously easier said than done in real time at full speed.

Regardless the first basemen had a decent chance of making the play at home. He looked like he would've beat the runner at home, and maybe made a tag with a good enough throw.

Catcher has to have more awareness of where everyone is b4 he throws to 3B if he runs him back 2 more steps everyone is in position and runner doesnt make 3rd run

1:29 I've never played baseball. Is there _any_ excuse for that bad of a throw?? I can understand having a bad night and mental errors when you're tied up in the 9th. But throwing to second should be completely automatic for a catcher, right? It's like watching Steve Nash shoot a free throw over the backboard. It just shouldn't happen.
@BongRips4JesusАй бұрын
that would be a off balance throw. imagine shooting your basketball with your feet switched around. throws everything off. he was probably also trying to do a pump fake to first and throw to second in one motion and that’s how it ended up. trying to do to much and be a hero fucked them even more

Santana taking the walk on the 3-2 count was interesting as well. The umpire lost track of the count... called the passed ball a strike and then forgot he did.

The body language by the Angels players is pathetic. None of them look like they want to be there. As soon as that runner stole third you can see it in the players that they knew the game was over. I think the higher ups in that organization are what’s wrong with the Angels. Sad to see.

I don’t know who the second baseman is but 5:14 look at the frame. Jomboy says double play is not an option but based off the freeze frame I’d have to believe he could have thrown it to first, gotten Julio out and then thrown it to second before that runner was even close. It would have to be an immediate throw to first and hopefully the shortstop runs over and covers second in time but hey hindsight is always 20/20

Another video popped up for this breakdown and I immediately searched for Jomboy's. Guy's a gift to sports. Knowing very little about baseball strategy, I was thinking double-play depth when it was tied. Bad case you get one out and the run scores, worst case you get nothing for a ground ball but now runners on 1st and 2nd instead of 1st and 3rd. Getting no outs for 2 runs is horrid.

In college, I played first base and we got plays like this run-down between third and home every so often, like all teams do. One time, my brain just took a nap in the middle of it and I watched the whole thing standing there like an idiot. Never even occurred to me that I should break for home until it was all over. Awful feeling. At least in the Angels' case, it was somewhat understandable.

GOMS! It took me a while after the game to figure out why Rojas goes back to third base instead of home to throw out Haggerty… There’s nobody covering home 😂! I figured he just made a colossal error and somebody called for him to throw back to third. Lmao what an inning, may never see anything like that again.

Yeah the mistake in the rundown was with both 3B and C. The catcher didn't run the runner far enough back to third base, and the 3B didn't stay on the base and was running toward the catcher. If 3B would have stayed at his base, it would have allowed the catcher more time to run the runner back towards third and allow the 1B to reach home.

@ 2:00 - yelled at the catcher? I’ve been front row to many MLB games. One of the fundamental flaws that I see them make is that they don’t communicate with each other at all on the field. They don’t call pop flies, call each other off of plays, inform pitchers on first and third scenarios, or in this case, tell the catcher to hold off the throw, etc. You can bet their high school and college coaches didn’t teach them not to communicate - quite the opposite in fact. I’m not sure why communicating is so unpopular or ‘uncool’ at the MLB level. It’s fundamental to the game.
