I wonder if they (remaining Anglia TV staff) retained the Knight, normally kept in a glass case in the board room , when they moved out of the old studios , this little statuete has been critised out of ignorance but personally I think its the best emblem of all the original ITV companies in the UK. I grew up in the central Midlands (ATV land basically) but with the right aerial we could 'get' Anglia , they showed some different programmes and it was good to see shots of Norfolk (where many Midlanders holidayed) and the coast in the regional news. That tune/fanfair and Knight was splendid - what have we 'progressed' to - a boring ITV sign no fanfair (doesn't deserve it)

watlingfen Anglia served Lincolnshire and as far inland as north Notinghamshire. They had the Belmont transmitter but in 1979 it was taken over by Yorkshire. We used to get ATV Midlands but Anglia as well.

watlingfen I know it was only supposed to serve Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambs but they had a much larger area with that powerful Belmont transmitter. When the station opened up the music played far longer. It played the whole of the hornpipe section of Handel's water music. It was a pleasure to listen to.

+watlingfen Anglia House is still used by ITV, and the Anglia knight is in the foyer there. Anglia TV took out a 99 year lease on the building from Norwich City Council in 1959 and it would cost ITV a pretty penny to leave it now.

Anglia also had the "Spirit of" Idents like Meridian had when they were both owned by United News and Media.

The Anglia Ident truly signifies and epitomizes a time when ITV was truly an independent franchise of television companies. I lament what Thatcher did in 1990 with her spiteful Broadcasting Act. What are we left with now? A homogenous mess that is neither independent and has a perpetual monopoly of utter cheap crap courtesy of Granada and Carlton. What is truly shocking is that Granada itself was once a great broadcaster. The Govt should break up ITV, bring back the IBA as a more stringent regulatory broadcaster as well as return to the old franchise system. Telly was much better back then. Now we all have the same shit forced on us.

Firstly there is still some anger, many years later, that overnight Belmont changed from Anglia TV to Yorkshire TV without it seems viewer consultation through the ITA (later re-labled IBA). . Lincolnshire has been first slotted into norther England now its part of the disliked 'east Midlands' whereas when I was a child Lincolnshire was firmly Eastern England (part of East Anglia) so part of the ancient kingdom of Anglia , hense Anglia TV served it right down to Essex (Sandy Heath, Beds) and (officially) west to Northants though both eastern Leicestershire and Notts got good signals from either Belmont or Tacolneston. My 6ft Fuba and masthead pre-amp used to be quite fun to rotate between Sandy and Belmont as I'm in Hinckley Leics (LE10 0NJ) but then came bloody digital !!!!!! As for the grumbling that the Anglia 'theme' extract was 'too long' - rubbish! - compare it with ATV and Westward Television in the early days of VHF Band 2 TV . Besides it (full version) was taken from a classical peice (Vaughn Williams Sea Songs) . The Anglia Presents programme intro (adapted from Handel) is very sort. It's a great shame the pride of the regions was lost when the not very original 'itv' 1,2,3,4 decided to 'ape' BBC.

I await to be corrected BUT when Anglia Television first began there were a number of complaints. For a start the name. It should have been East Anglia Television. The music on the ident was far too long. At first,the East Anglia television station refused to trim! Must add, i remember asking why the Handel Water Music as it was composed for the King on his River Thames barge! I await to be corrected.
@independentpuppy75209 жыл бұрын
Keith Martin I remember the music used to be far longer on Anglias opening on it's own channel. It played the whole of that section of the hornpipe from Handels water music. It lasted about 5 mins plus.

They'd have had trouble with a Granada megamix. The region had no music
@jane19756 жыл бұрын
@Argus Panoptes: They still count as idents, it wasn't until 1989 that Granada had an ident with music ( a ghostly Granada symbol in the sky, above a silhouette graphic ) then it came the stripe ident with the same music of the previous "sky" ident.
@arguspanoptes95106 жыл бұрын
jane1975 now I come to think of it Granada did have the ghostly musical ident. I'm from the Granada region so I should have remembered that. Thanks
@jane19756 жыл бұрын
@Argus Panoptes: You're welcome, yes Granada refused to adopt the generic ident in 1989 ( not surprised it was badly done for their region and a number of other regions too: TVS, TSW, Anglia all said no to it) and used the ghostly one sometimes in conjunction with the 89 ITV generic look or on its own. I saw the sky ident when I visited Cumbria once ( Granada partly covered Cumbria and the rest was served by Border ITV ).
