They also held a role in confirming succession. The automatic heir did not necessarily always take the place of a recently deceased monarch, as the Witan got the final say. In most cases they just confirmed the natural succession, but there were cases where a different relative, or even an entirely different royal family were chosen (eg. Alfred chosen over Aethelred's son Aethelwold, or Sweyn Forkbeard confirmed in place of Aethelred the Unred)
