I love the names of this time. Æthelstan is made up of two parts 'Æthel' which means noble and 'stan' which means stone so his name was Noblestone. Ætheling means noble person (like a prince).

It's always an interesting question of the impact on history, the "What ifs" of the early death of the designated heir, inevitably leaving either a regent or less competent ruler. Most famously of course is Edward the Black Prince, but so many times, this has occurred and shaped the course of history. One does wonder why Aethelstan Atheling and Edmund did not forcibly overthrow their father and pack him off to a monastery. I'm excited to see Godwin and Canute arrive on scene and the change that they will bring and the story of the North Sea Empire. Great video as usual Pete.

Interesting question indeed. Young Henry, son of Henry II as well. I feel like Æthelred must've had something going for him. Perhaps an honourable personality that has since become obscured over the ages. This was an era rife with crown princes revolting against their fathers, take Otto I and his son Liudolf over in East Francia for example, so it wouldn't have been unusual for them to overthrow him. Yet he even got invited back after Sweyn's death.

History Time Henry the Young King, not to mention Henry V for Charles of France. Bonnie Charlie and the '45 at Culloden, might be another such scenario, but that's just my Scots bitterness at the ill treatment of the Stuarts coming through. But do we read too much into the Holy Roman/Carolingian Empire? It was, or was soon to become, succession by electorate, not properly dynastic, and some Kings of the Romans preferred to force the issue before the vote.

Ian Medford. I read a couple of books on the Reivers a few months back. The first book was titled "Reiver." There is a sequel but I can not remember the name right now. They are historical fiction so I can not say anything about their accuracy to history but I thought the books were worth the reading and I personally enjoyed them. If you have not read them you also may enjoy them, if for no other reason than to check their accuracy.

JayDene Kail Steel Bonnets maybe? Thats a great book, and its "historical fiction" as well... I got into this topic by doing some ancestry research and found that my family (The Mitfords) was a minor English noble family based in Northumberland and was deeply involved in the border wars; and i just became fascinated. I'd love to see it covered by this channel because this guy does great work. Its the best historical podcast on the net as far as I'm concerned, and his topic selection is particularly good.

Cnut was actually in England when Sweyn died and proclaimed King by his troops (not the Wittan) but driven out by Athelstan and Edmund. Nor did it end there as Edmund had two sons Edward and Edmund who Cnut sent abroad probably to have them killed but they escaped to Kyiv and later went to Hungary where Edmund died. Edward 'the exile' however returned when his half Uncle Edward 'the Confessor' had no heir but the exile died soon after returning leaving his three children, Edgar Aethling who was briefly proclaimed King in 1066 after Harold ll died at Hastings but being only 12/13 could not gather sufficient support to withstand William of Normandy. But a daughter Margaret (later Sainted) married Malcom King of Scotland and a daughter of their union married Henry l, William's youngest son. Their son William 'Adelin' (or Aethling) died in the White Ship disaster but his Sister, Matilda or the Empress Maude, after her first Husband the Emperor died, married Henry of Anjou and fought her cousin Stephen who had usurped the throne of England. When Stephen's son died he agreed that the heir should be Matilda's son by Henry of Anjou so the first Angevin (Plantagenet) King, Henry ll, actually brought back the royal line of Wessex. But I am writing a book about it all.

These are great! I am glad I found your videos. I hope you plan on continuing with the history of the British Isles, at least through the Norman conquest. Perhaps go back in time a little and review the Holy Roman Empire and it's inception by Charlemagne, and then the divisions of the kingdom into the Franks, Lothars and Germans, then of course the intermarrying of the Frankish and West Saxon kings, the Viking raids and settlements in Frisia and Paris, and of course the story of Rollo and the creation of Normandy. From there we can follow the stories of Judith and Baldwin of Flanders, the legacy of William Longsword, the political drama between the Parisian court and the Frankish nobles in their varied territories, and finally William the Bastard. I would love to have a bigger picture of the political turmoil in France between Rollo and William (later the Conqueror), especially how the Vikings played a part, blending with cultures, siding with some nobles or some kings, or even with or against Christians. How Charlemagne could not defeat the Danes, how his son Charles could not buy them off, how Hedeby was built as a literal wall between the Christian world and the Norse. I would love to know everything there is to know about Viking settlements around the North and Baltic seas and the British Isles, things like that one souce mentions Uber Ragnarson as being a duke of Frisia. The stories that start with Judith, princess of Paris, queen of England, and Rollo in Normandy are the same that a few generations later culminate with William the Bastard landing in Dover in 1066, saying that he was a legitimate heir to the English throne, a claim that was made thereafter for hundreds of years as the English and French battled for supremacy. Thank you again. I am subscribed now, and will keep an eye on it all as we move forward, or backward, through history.

History Time but the millionth video on a European. Would love if someone taught about more obscure cultures like Africans or Arabs. Especially Arabs. So much happened and was recorded but not talked about on KZbin.

Patience. These videos take a very long time to make. I'd rather be completely clued up on the history before diving into a new subject. Hence why I'm taking my time to read everything there is to know about a subject before tackling it. I will eventually be covering a great deal of Arabic and African history.
