Very beautiful. I also found that a fan really dried out my orchids more than helped them. I turned them off and I think the plants like it better, though I sometimes have problems with cattleya buds rotting in a sheath. Its odd how some sheaths will stay green and healthy and others will go soft and rot the buds.
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I installed the fan chiefly for my cattleyas as last year I had a lot of rots popping up. Unfortunately I have such a mixed collection that it is impossible to just have the fan on the cattleyas. We all have our cross to bear :) Happy growing!

Beautiful Angraecum well done! I just recently bought an Angraecum magdelanae from la Canopee in France ( you might of heard of them haha) hoping I will coax it into bloom if not this year then next.

Haha. yes, I think I've heard of them. Happy growing, Roger.

For me, there is a 'balance' between good air movement (fans) and a 'draft' - also the moving air needs to be quite humid or it can have a drying effect on orchids that are in the direct line of fire. Because my circulating fans are large, I have to keep them as far away from actual plants as possible which in a square(ish) room means in the corner with no plants in it. The Angraecum is wonderful! (one is always better than none).
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Roger. Balance is the key and, yes, one angraecum flower is definitely better than none.

Great to see it flowers. One flower is not that bad.. I have an A Crestwood since 11 years and it never set a flower, I definitely don't have enough light to induce anthesis (which is why I don't bother trying cattleyas) On a side note, your book arrived in my mailbox today :)
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
11 years :O Time for the bin, I think! Hey, I'm so glad you bought my book. I hope you enjoy it enormously and happy reading :)
@sjusovare8 жыл бұрын
Gardening at Douentza well no, not the bin, I always have a hard time throwing plants (except if they are positively virosed), and the foliage is aesthetic enough, plus I may someday move to a place with a proper south facing window :)

You have an admirable love of plants. I hope it rewards you eventually. You must have a super sized plant by now.
@jelenalescova94798 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachael thank you.I watched you're video about it and went to garden centre and got one.Only I am little bit afraid for the roots,will I burn them and should I water the plant before hand.Oh I am so upset I have them in all plants. They are so small it is impossible to even see them.:(
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
It is very upsetting and I sympathise lots, Jelena. The roots may be an issue and you may have to unpot your plants to spray the roots and discard the old medium. In the end I was not sure I had thrips on my orchids as I seem to have eliminated them with with the spraying. I sprayed any visible roots on my orchids and they don't seem to have suffered.

The Angraecum flower looks gorgeous! I love how firm and waxy it is, reminds me of white chocolate. :) Osmoglossum flowers are really interesting. Do I see a hint of bluish colour? Or is it just so delicate that the camera picks it up that way? Oh, and my nobiles are stupid, they always bloom AND grow in summer, and do nothing in winter... Thanks for sharing!
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
White chocolate! What a perfect description. I agree 100% :) There's no hint of blue in this white, just the camera playing tricks. And as for your nobiles - flowers at any time of year will do!

Hi Rachael how are you. Righting to you with big concern and my apology it's so late I noticed tonight that something was moving in my orchid pot so I left small pease of potato and when I remove it I notice my orchid have trips and then I done the same to all my small collection and to my horror I have them in every pot.What I should do?How do I get rid of it?Please help?It is so discouraging :( i being so careful with new orchids.I appreciate You're advice. Thank you.
@GardeningatDouentza8 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry to hear that, Jelena. So upsetting and stressful. A systemic like provado can be used to rid your plants of thrips but you may need to repeat the treatment. You can buy it in good garden centres.
@bumblebeesorchids34088 жыл бұрын
I hope it's okay that I write something here. Jelena, are you sure that they are thrips and not springtails? I'm just asking, because I find that adult thrips and springtails can look quite similar and I have loads of springtails in the medium that would come together on potatoes and cucumbers, too. I've heard that thrips can be found inside pots, too. But I think the majority would reside on rather delicate parts of the plants like new leaves, flowers and spikes.
