Basically a more extreme version of the butcher's nails, from the highest "noble" of bloodshed there is. A literal daemon god. Angron's story is one of my favorites and its very Greek tragedy full circle esque in a setting wherw most primarch's arent so well written. Angron's simplicity (angry slave wants to be free), lends itself to such a rich character.

I love how, even in his dying moments, Kauregar still calls Angron “lord” and “father”. Angron even refers to him by his name, and as his son. He doesn’t hate Angron for what he did, and he dies not in the arms of a murderer, a butcher, he dies in the caring embrace of his loving father.

I think its not really that Angron is a slave to Khorne but his own bitterness about his past is what allows Khorne to keep his hold on him. Angron had solid motivations but in many ways, he was the worst Primarch. He was the only one who didn't conquer his home planet. He was wholly unable to follow battleplans. His legion is categorically worse for him being found. For a former primarch gladiator who only does one thing, and that thing is melee, he's lost a surprising amount of duels. So while his traitor turn was fairly justified compared to most, he's far from the best traitor Primarch. Of the ones currently alive in the setting, the best would have to be either Morty or Perty. Morty has done the most in the recent lore and Perty pretty much hard carried the Heresy.

I love the idea that Angron smiled when he realized Kauregar had actually given him a wound. That he was actually proud of all of them, even if they didn't understand why he was against the Emperor. I do wish there'd been a confrontation between Angron and Horus though, where Horus assumes Angron is loyal to him and gets corrected in a similar fashion. "No. Do not mistake me, Horus. I care not for your whining little rebellion against that Man. MY fight with him is not the same as yours. We might be aligned against him now, but I will NEVER bow to anyone ever again. Not Him... and not YOU." Before stomping off to lead his World Eaters into battle, leaving Horus frustrated that Angron isn't even nominally under his control... and relieved that he didn't have to fight him because there'd be little chance of him winning against the Red Angel.

Everyone talking about the tragic irony of Angron being enslaved by the nails, his rage, and Khorne. That’s true but I think at the start of the heresy until his ascension to Daemonhood I think Angron did had a brief respite. Then Lorgar had to ruin it by doing the ritual to turn him into a demon prince instead of letting him die free and finally be released. So it’s Lorgar’s fault, and if that’s the case then we all know it’s Erebus’s fault too.
@halfknight2310

Yep. You can blame lorgar for that. Angron was dying. During the battle of calth he was so close to death. He and Guilleman clashed blows. And He could feel it. He began to see his family. Fighting by his side once more. It was perfect. He was finally going to die. He was back at decheleka ridge. His family fighting by his side. He was back to where he wanted to die. And it was perfect. But lorgar. In his own twisted way. Wanted to save Angron. So. Created a ritual to turn Angron into a daemon primarch of khorne. And angron’s peace was stripped away once more. His pain, his suffering, it all followed through his ascension. Now. 10 000 years later. He vows that one day. He will have peace. He will have a true death. But till then. He will continue his slaughter. For that is all he has left.

I realized from this short story that Angron has always been trying to kill himself in battle. Unlike the rest of his sons who blindly fell because the Emperor designed them to follow their master, the respect he shows was because he recognized that this marine fought and died for an ideal he chose rather than the one he was crafted for. The emperor stole that from Angron reducing him to nothing but the weapon.

I whole heartedly prefer this version of Angrons voice to how the normal line up of voice actors depict him - don’t get me wrong Keeble is an absolute legend, but to me, Angron shouldn’t be a Whiney wailer, he should have a hoarse and gravelly deep tone, like boulders grinding inside a blood-wet cavern, well done whoever voiced him for this clip.

Many people think if the Emperor had been able to remove the Butcher's Nails and rescued his fellow gladiators, it would've been enough to make Angron loyal. But Angron could never be loyal to someone who calls himself a master of others. The tragedy of Angron is that it's likely that the only thing the Emperor could have done to earn Angron's trust and loyalty, would have been to respect his wish for a warrior's death and let him die.

@nidhoggryggdrasil2489 he couldn't go back the emperor abducted him and psychically knocked him out while the world was brought into compliance after killing his warriors. The emperor flat out refused to save his brothers and sisters so angron refused him and took the honorable path to fight and die alongside his family. It's been said before but all the emperor had to do was beam down himself, like 10 custodes, and a couple hundred world eaters to back up angron and save his family. This would leave angron loyal to the emperor completely as his family would've been saved, they could leave the planet to gladiators and by extension get recruits from the world that would be the children of the gladiators, hence angron would love them automatically. The reason he wanted to stay and die is because the pain of the nails and refusal of the emperor pretty much solidified that angron would have nothing in life except pain and violence. This is what became of his life, no surprise he's the way he is.

Except this time he also dies proud of his sons for doing what he was unable to do, kill their master. Knowing they would be expunged from history like the second and eleventh, they take Angrons body on 47 ronin style a pilgrimage back to Nuceria and bury him with the gladiators from his original rebelion, shortly before the Emperor and Custodies arrive.
