These animals are no joke, I went on a kayaking trip in Tanzania and I spotted a large pod. Before I knew it I was thrown into the water and my kayak was flipped by a large bull. Thankfully it swam away before I was crushed with teeth sharper than razor blades. This really shows that these animals are built like gladiators and have a temper much worse.

You're not far off, I think this is done to scent-mark. It is also their regular way of pooping, but you will see them do it a lot and very vigorously when they're aggressive, fighting, seeing off enemies, etc

But I guarantee you if you just started walking towards them clapping, they would both hesitate for a second and then take off into the water. I think this is just so obvious. People don't understand how wild animals operate/think. They want to fight each other, and maybe they would fight a human too if the mood struck, but a random human walking up to them when they didn't seek out a fight will just make them nervous (like most animals, even lions; I think elephants are about the only ones who will stand their ground convincingly). This is not because humans are necessarily especially scary (though they might be), but any animal approaching them boldly like that would get a similar reaction.
