Engines this big should be using a bypass filter. Swap the main & sub micron bypass filters and top up the level. Job done. If you are really fussy get the oil sample tested.

99 f150 6cyl.. 600,000 miles basic parts replaced.... id clutch . belt a/c comp powerstearing and alt.... compression still at 185/190 across the board. worst problem it ever gave me was when the clutch started slipping at 500,000 miles... yes oem ... it even had the date from install... 12/14/1998

I'm in Mexico, and I charge $140 for a 7.3 oil change, without tire rotation. Considering your location and shop rate, that is way cheap for an oil change. That being said, the 7.3 is a great engine, they put both of my daughters through private school over the years

@@shadymaint1 i don't like the guy at all, but china is the reason for most of the shortages right now, not the president. about a year ago some Australian politician suggested there should be an investigation on where/how exactly the virus broke out in China. a few days later China banned the import of Australian coal...which powers 75% of their power plants. after their reserves ran out, they've been having to do systematic blackouts to conserve power and many factories have gone into "manual mode" which is literally bolting handles onto the sides of machines to turn them by hand. the power conservation requirements are also why they cracked down on crypto miners, though under the guise of helping the environment. as for the oil shortages, there isn't one. the shortage is coming from lack of the additive chemicals that are required to be in the oil for the current CK-4 standard. add that together with lack of semi drivers, the chemtool factory fire recently, and the fuel line shut down last year because of hackers, and you get a back log of orders that have to be filled while new orders are still coming in. that equals high demand, high prices, and shortages for anyone thaty didn't alrady have an order in.

When I worked at the Ford dealer, we would poke a hole in the bottom of those filters to let them drain before removal to avoid the "Valdeze".

Same here. I used a sharp punch and hammer to pop a hole or 2 and let er drain. I work on some heavy equipment with the big ass filters. Way easier than handling a filter with a gallon of nasty black oil.

Hey man, I’m a diesel mechanic in Georgia, good tip for these large 2+ quart oil filters before you loosen them take a Phillips head, or a punch and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain it beforehand, do it first, drain your oil pan and by the time it’s all done there’s no oil to spill everywhere when you take the filter off

Everyone should know basic automobile maintenance. 90% of regular maintenance can be doine at home with a basic tool set. Ratchet, sockets, breaker bar, screwdrivers, pliers, allen wrenches, a pry bar, a linear force applicator (hammer) and a drain pan. Those tools would cover you for oil changes, brake pad replacement (rotors as well unless they're of the old school with bearings and grease inside), air filter, any light bulbs (inside or out). Heck, I replaced a transmission with a ratchet, screwdriver, and pliers. Not a fun job to do in your driveway. But it worked out.

I own a 7.3l, I bought a motor craft oil filter at Walmart for $10.00, 4 gallons of 15w40 oil at walmart for $13.59 a gallon, and it took me 20 minutes to complete taking my sweet ass time. I would say your price is more than fair. He wants it cheaper he needs to do it himself.

Personal experience.....fill the filter with oil before spinning it on. Oh, and the 7.3 is a 15 qt system. I'd still say he got a heck of a deal at that price.

Ray one thing I would do when changing oil especially on diesel trucks is start by driving a punch through the bottom of the oil filter and let it drain. At the same time remove the drain plug. After the oil is drained you can remove the filter, it's much lighter and there no oil to splash you. Merry Christmas Ray.

I've had 3 Ford diesels and now a newer f150. They are great trucks, but you gotta pay to play. This is why I also own a small, efficient car for commuting and grocery trips. My f150 only gets driven a few times a month, while the beater car (06 prius) soaks up the easy miles at 45mpg. I drive 30k miles per year, so the fuel savings add up quick, let alone keeping the mileage off my truck.

Physics lesson time! The "centrifugal force" demo at 4:17 is actually a demonstration of angular momentum- the little motor in that ratchet is spun up and gets a load of momentum, and when you shut it off, it wants to keep spinning. The motor ends up pulling the case along with it, either through friction in some place or a permanent magnet in the case of a brushless motor, and causes the whole ratchet body to spin. P.S. Centrifugal force is an ix-nay on the force-ay list as far as most physics, since it's seen as an imaginary force. You "feel" centrifugal force when you spin a bucket of water around you, but that "force" pulling the bucket away from you is basically just the normal force, a reaction to your own centriPETAL force

Small tip that I used when I had my diesel with a giant vertical mount like that was to punch a small hole in the bottom of the old filter before removal to let it drain so it doesn’t spill to the side after unscrewing from the motor.

That's how most lube techs deal with any car that has the Ring of Fire if they don't have an oil filter socket. Pull the plug, pop a pair of holes in the can, let them both drain then use the holes to twist the filter out without burning your hands.

The spinning ratchet effect is angular momentum. When on the armature of the electric motor of the ratchet is spinning. When you let go of the whole tool (including the tiger) the electric brake engages and this transfers the angular momentum of the armature to the stator so the tool spins -until you catch it and the rest of the momentum is transferred to your hand. But there isn't enough force to spin Ray.

One thing that we do at work when changing diesel engine oil is we either use a welding hammer or just a tapered punch bit on our air hammer and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter in the middle and let the filter drain before taking it off. It makes the job a lot easier and whole lot less mess. Granted in this oil change scenario you didn't have quite the amount of room that you would have needed probably.

yep yep, that's what we did at the diesel shop I worked at. Basically anything pointy that you can give a couple wacks with a hammer. I made mine out of a screwdriver I ground to a pointy point. And punch the hole before you loosen the filter. We also pre-filled the filter before installing. Surprised he didn't do that.

Never seen Diesel oil that expensive always been about the same price when I've been buying. As for diesel & economy elsewhere in the world typically diesels have been way more economical from an mpg pov, US sized engines it doesn't seem to matter diesel/petrol its 15mpg or so no incentive to make smaller more efficient powerful units like in Europe where you can get 30, 40, 50mpg or more. Mind you when you can get those engines in the US they get laughed at as there's still the mindset you need a 5.0 or bigger at all times 😉

I had an '01 Excursion w/ a 7.3. Abso-freakin-lutely *LOVED* that power plant. That truck ran & drove like a dream. I did my own standard maintenance (oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, etc) and had a trustworthy mechanic, such as yourself, that handled any major issues/repairs. That same mechanic bought the truck from me when my business closed, and his daughter and her family drive it to this day. Never a sweeter sounding diesel in my Ford-slanted opinion! 😎 And yes, I stayed to watch the pouring at the end!

Working as a diesel tech for a while, took an old rounded out screwdriver and ground it down to a beefy icepick. Puncture the filter at the bottom, pull the pan plug and do everything else while you wait for it to drain. Saves a lot of oil ingestion.

Dang that oil looked pretty clean when you pulled the dipstick. I've owned a few 7.3 diesels and when I change the oil, its totally black after just one whip around the block. Not like Ive neglected them either. Pretty religiously change the oil every 3500-4000 miles. Those motors literally run forever tho! Unfortunately the rest of the truck starts falling apart after 350,000 miles

I bought a new 2001 F350 Lariat 4x4 to pull our 5th wheel trailer. I always changed the oil every 4000 mile and had the transmission flushed every 18000 miles. I know that is a bit of over kill, but I never had one issue with the truck (other than the fact it was too heavy to go off roading). I always used Rotella and did it myself, and it was still expensive.

I had a 1996 Ford F-350 with the 7.3. I bought it 1997 with about 175 miles on it from a ford dealer.and it was brand new. Special order truck and the guy who order it got tired of waiting for it. I got very lucky aquiring this truck. With that being said spent the money on the investment. At that time oil changes were 150 dollars. People just don’t get it. I went as far as letting the engine idle for cool down after a trip. And let engine warm up before driving. Some people just don’t care. That in a way is an investment. Getting several 100 thousand miles of reliable service is Priceless. Live in Michigan and didn’t drive the truck in the winter. With that being said.... You take care of it and it will take of you. Open your wallet!

Ray, I have done that job on my 2000 F250 many times with the same sort of mess just about every time😂. Since I am not on the clock, I take a bit longer but less mess by punching a hole in the bottom of the filter and letting it drain that way. Much better than having oil run down the outside. That big filter holds a lot of oil so I partial prefill the new one before installing it. I really should get some new drain plug washers. I’ve gotten away with using the old one so far. On the other hand, if it ain’t broke….don’t fix it.😂

I am surprised that he didn't prefill the filter. There are some vehicles where one can't because the filter attaches at a non-vertical angle, but where on can I think it is better to prefill so that one gets oil pressure up quicker.

@@BryanTorok Not a requirement. And Ford says to NOT pre-fill their diesels oil filters. Unless its explicitly stated, pre-filling oil filters is not necessary. You can do it if you want though. Kind of impossible to pre-fill an oil filter on a BMW that uses a cartridge, or a Subaru where the filter in/out are pointing downwards.

I stoped changing my own oil when I realized I didn't want to deal with the old oil. I get alot of satisfaction from servicing my car but I am older now and things change. Rainman demonstrates the proper way to perform maintenance ( most people want it quick and dirty and hopefully not forget anything) And, costs for parts and labor are a shocker but, I guess, reasonable. To be fair the engine was already hot, so wouldn't have been a problem even in Canada. Still, and even living in a warm climate, I got a laugh. Half the glow plugs on my diesel didn't even work, and I didn't know that for about two years, but I've often thought about how much harder it must be living in a cold climate. Just the heating bill my wife would run up would be the GDP of a small nation LOL.

Pretty sure the wrench spinning like that is due to conservation of angular momentum, which is a really cool physics thing- it's the same reason spacecraft can control their orientation (in basically the same way you showed) by spinning heavy disks really fast. Speeding them up and slowing them down allows the spacecraft to rotate without using fuel.

Although your explanation of angular momentum is spot on, I think you are over thinking it. The part of the tool spinning perpendicular to the orientation of the tool may not be causing this. There is a vertical component of the mechanism that spins the half-inch drive and that, when it stops, causes the rest of the too to continue rotating along the same plane.

@@PaulMcClellanmn You should get your oil from Walmart. It's the cheapest place and they have Rotella T6. I use Mobil 1 oil filters and I use CAT fuel filter with the adapter plate. My air filter is K&N reusable air filter. I don't need air/water separator. Never had any water get in my fuel. I use Diesel 911 additives. I have my own grease gun and use Mobil 1 full synthetic grease.

Great job! I have a 2002 F250 4X4 Crew Cab w/ the 7.3L at 247K miles. It takes 15 qts to do an oil change. So $130 for a shop to do it is a steal!! One more tip about removing the large oil filters on these 7.3's is to take a 16D nail and punch a hole in the bottom of it prior to removal to drain the oil from within it. Takes care of two things: relieves the pressure inside the filter making the spin-off easier and then there is no mess when it comes off since the oil has drained from it!!

7.3s take 15 qts also with those bigger filters you need to add a qt of oil in the filter before you put the filter on. The injectors rely on the high pressure oil and air in the hpop system can be bad for the hpop and injectors

Also, how is prefilling the filter any worse than pouring that "contaminated" oil straight into the engine? I understand not doing it if the filter is upside down or at a weird angle, but if it it's horizontal or screws on from the bottom then it makes no sense to run it in dry.

Also, if you're changing a diesel's oil for 100 while PAYING someone to do it, that's not a "rip off" that's a bargain. Most of the filters are in the 20 dollar (or more) range and oil is 8-10 dollars. 15w40 conventional t3 is a little less at places like Walmart, but it will still be over 100 for just the materials.

Here's how I change the oil filters without making a mess if the filters are accessible. 1. Loosen the filter. Do not break the seal on the gasket. You just want to be able to spin it off by hand after draining. 2. Punch a hole in the bottom of the filter to let it drain into the bucket. 3. After the filter is empty, hold your finger over the hole and spin it off by hand. I do big trucks so the filters can be quite heavy and hot if full of oil. It is much lighter and cooler when empty so it is easier to handle and you can rotate it some to get it out of tight places without worrying about spilling the oil out of the top of it. This may not work for some trucks due to the location of the filter or filters.

I also like doing my own oil changes because 1) I know good synthetic oil is used, and is the right viscosity. Some shops get in such a hurry that they over/underfill it very easily. 2) I know a quality oil filter is used. Not a generic cheap filter. 3) I know the old oil has been drained completely, as I have the time. In some shops that are in too big of a hurry, they may not get all the old oil out. Lastly, I had a friend who had an oil change done at a dealership, and they got oil all over the top of the engine, causing it to smoke terribly. He took it back and they power washed the oil off. Not an ideal way to do an oil change.

We're at $139.95 and I believe we're the cheapest diesel oil change in the Seattle area, and we only use factory filters. A good trick on the 7.3 trucks (and vans) is to poke a hole in the bottom of thefilter with a punch so that the filter and oil cooler drain before you pull the filter. No chance for a mess that way. You won't drop the filter in the pan because it won't be oily. For some reason that trick doesn't work on the 6.7 fords, I haven't figured out why.

Hey Ray, love the channel and you’re a good, honest wrench. Little tip - was a heavy diesel mechanic for years, vertical filter on these, before spinning it off, punch and hammer a drain hole in bottom of filter to drain before spinning off. Also best to fill new filter 3/4 or more with new oil before installing, picks the pressure up quicker on the start and usually won’t be low on level check. Diesel drain oil does have a mind of it’s own - one of those questions of the universe. Customer shouldn’t gripe about cost, try 14 GALLONS, two oil filters every month @ 12 - 14 k miles for a Cat, Cummins or Detroit - $$$$$ Keep up the good work!!!

Tip to try, with a long (6-12") pointed punch put a hole in the bottom side of the filter before starting to remove, let the oil drain out into the oil tray then unscrew the filter as normal (note the oil comes out sideways place the tray carefully), with an empty filter you get no oil over the top or onto you. The 7.3 usually takes 14....never seen one that takes 12 or one that takes a 12.5 or 14.5....normally I agree with the dry filter because of the way the oil system is designed however on a full sized pickup truck diesle and larger the filter should always be prefilled because of that turbo...the turbo is what get the oil first and if it runs dry even for a 1/2 second it's not good...had a fellow technician that didn't believe in prefilling diesle oil filters and it nearly bankrupted our shop in free snails

Just a little tip to avoid mess. I have been a heavy equipment mechanic for 30 years and I find if you use a punch and hammer a hole in the bottom of the old filter and let it drain out I becomes much lighter and easier to handle when removing so you are less likely to drop the filter and make a mess. One spec of hard dirt, sand in those oil jugs and it could find a main bearing and destroy it in time. I have the luxury of doing my own oil changes using sealed containers so zero dirt. I have a 99' 7.3 and do my own oil changes. It's usually 15 quarts with a filter change, so I was surprised when Ray said this one only needed 12 quarts - and then he had to add 3.5 more. In the past I got surprised myself at what shops charge for the oil. For a while, I was buying the oil and filter at Walmart and then having the shop do the labor which only cost me around $20, so $80 all in.

Every other oil change on a poserstroke or diesel or every 15k miles or so. That would be optimal changing. Probably only really necessary every 30k miles. Depends on weather, driving conditions and fuel quality.

Agree. We replace them every 2nd oil change. On my old TD VW i would unscrew the fuel water seperator and drain it. It would stumble a tad before clearing up.
