15 year referee here. Yes he struggled for control - late and inconsistent decisions, poor foul recognition, weak discipline for reckless and excessive challenges. But let's not lay it all at his door, it took an assignor to put him in a match he wasn't ready for and a system desperately short of referees. Those players demonstrated appalling lack of discipline and respect for the game, and the coaches and spectators were firing them up. Recipe for disaster.

As a 5 year referee in America, you’re absolutely right about everything here. And because of how dickheads act in these games, it dissuades younger players and people to try and become referees. We don’t have enough refs especially when you’ve got 4 games in a row. That third and fourth game you’re not mentally ready to continue doing your best job.

its not ref incompetence ..the refs are pressured from the system, clubs, assignors not to toss players..he did miss some calls but the players dictated the game..if he calls it tighter, then its water polo with excessive whistles or he starts tossing players..then the assignor sees 4-5 ejections and hears complaints from the clubs that the ref couldn't handle that level so he uses yellow and talking to the players the whole game

I would like him to show his personality while he refs.. the way he talks to them goes a long way .. he did miss some calls ..maybe his view blocked by players.. everyone commenting wanted him to toss players .. that’s not always the fix.. where does it end .. if that was a tournament he would probably not be invited back especially if he started tossing players .. the most frustrating thing as a ref when doing a college showcase tournament is when you ref the game and you don’t have the full support of the tent ( ref assignor) when you had to toss players .. I’ve seen the assignors cone to the center ref, after both coaches and parents complained to the tent about the ref, ask the ref what happened but NEVER ask the AR’s what happened.. not every AR will agree with the center ref about his calls .. then the tent will try to whittle down the red cards to yellow to make the PAYING clubs happy .. he needs a better style .. he seems to picked a style from watching professional refs on tv ..

I'm a coach at youth level in England. It might be a cultural thing but I've never once heard either coaches or spectators giving that level of abuse to a referee or players of the opposing team. The referee could have managed the game better but how are the coaches setting an example for their players and parents for their sons when they're constantly questioning every decision. Over here the clubs set out their expectations of how everyone should act on a matchday and whilst abuse still happens, it's rare and certainly not to the extent that I've seen on some of these videos. I used to play as a kid and enjoyed it for the ten or so years I played until I began hyperventilating and had to stop. But this reminds me of issues I didn’t realize at the time. I remember coming across teams that ranked regularly because the players, parents, and the coaches were all about being aggressive even if it injured your opponents. There was one team that played both in my casual league and the upper competitive league, a major difference being that slide tackles were both allowed and taught up there but not for us. The biggest difference was that my league had no card system, only penalty kicks, which didn’t matter due to their superior skills and physical abilities. So they were technically able to get away with anything. For me this culminated in one of their forwards getting fed up with me (left defender), due to me constantly poking and clearing his dribbles with my tiny size and speed. So while the ref wasn’t watching, he body checked me head-first into the side goalpost. This happened twice and the refs never called anything. Sorry for the lengthy post, but it’s nice to vent. Even if it’s been around fifteen years.

I'm feeling for the ref here. I have been in a similar situation a few times in my early days of refereeing. You see the roughness in the tackles, but in lack of confidence you take too long to judge it - in the end you just let it go. Later on that I learned the balancing thought, blowing the whistle or not blowing the whistle - both are decisions. One mentor taught me that, in the cases of rough tackles early in the game, that strictly speaking is on the ball, you can still whistle it down and give the players a sign to take it easier. Also, when YC someone in big tackles, you do well to pause the game a few sec (take your time with noting down the player, etc) before you restart. If a player was "hot" (even if he hasn't made a big foul yet) a ref can look for an opportunity to calm him down. Once I saw one experienced ref take 10-15 sec to do breathing exercises with a 19 year old hothead - it was a funny situation, but it worked. The player kept his discipline afterwards. In this game, I notice the sliding tackle at 3:21 - should have been whistled (dangerous tackle, no hit, indirect FK). That might have been a key moment that set a standard how the players see the ref. Else, on a general level, I wish the ref used his voice more authoritatively - especially when they argue. I see his hands wave players away, but he would likely gain more respect for using a loud clear voice. As mentioned, I feel for him - it was a difficult game to oversee, and the players were quite undisciplined and the coaches with audience showed little respect for sportsmanship.

Ref needed to throw some early yellows to regain control of the game. Those players were reckless as hell and most the cards he issued were for professional fouls and delays, while letting the dangerous tackles go unpunished.

Referee was decent and I wouldn’t mind sharing the pitch with him. We are always learning and growing. It’s hard to get the feel of the game and when things get dirty you have to be even extra cautious. A good talking to, to a team captain or coach to control his team works wonders. Once the cards came out it was a bit cleaner over all except for 18 red.
@paullee1521

What video did you watch? It was dirty the entire time. Some guy got kicked in the face and no card. A blue player slid hard multiple times with no intention to get the ball and was never carded. Ref was decent? This was one of the worst refs I've ever seen.
@aribpm
@aribpm 2 жыл бұрын
@@paullee1521 maybe he did something or said something to get kicked in the face and the Ref thought it was justified and he “didn’t see it” . Un written rules of sports and officiating is bitter sweet sometimes. I have had well over 4,000 games in my 20 years as a US Soccer federation Ref and I can tell you I have seen much worse. It might be clear and easy call from standing on the sidelines and having replay. I can tell you sprinting 60/70 yards multiple times and then having to identify fouls while watching other things you have to watch is almost impossible. Not to mention both sides bitching the whole time. You will miss some calls no matter how easy they are.

From my experience as a ref, players naturally get more aggressive throughout the game. If you start the game not being strict to the rules and letting things go, you are already putting yourself at a disadvantage in having a good game for everyone. Stick to the rules and don’t let yourself slide on not making calls. Also, if you’re not making a lot of calls, it’s probably because you’re either out of position or you’re not applying the rules correctly. For older teenagers/adults, you can almost find a foul where someone is pushing someone every 30 seconds to a minute. If you’re getting a lot of fouls and players are not stopping (the fouls are getting worse), apply your card as much as possible where it’s appropriate, until the amount of fouls decreases. You have to do this in games like this because you can very easily get an out of control game where people are getting hurt, like this one.

If you don't want to do it then I guess I'm going to do it and so I'm gonna ask you to go over and sit down in the stands." It's not just the referee who needs to "control" the game. The coaches are responsible for this as well. As a referee, when asked to 'control the game', my response is usually to gather both coaches, and tell them each to control their own players. And then I tell them that for each yellow card a player on their team earns from that point forward, it also earns one for the coach. Two and you're gone. If they can't control their players, they have no business being a coach. And then I instruct them that I will be calling it super tight the rest of the game. Calling everything I see. That usually calms it down pretty quick.

its not ref incompetence ..the refs are pressured from the system, clubs, assignors not to toss players..he did miss some calls but the players dictated the game..if he calls it tighter, then its water polo with excessive whistles or he starts tossing players..then the assignor sees 4-5 ejections and hears complaints from the clubs that the ref couldn't handle that level so he uses yellow and talking to the players the whole game

I think he was a good ref, the game is getting so soft, its good that he allowed contact on BOTH sides. He missed a hand ball, but it happens. In any competitive u21 league, if u talk back to the ref like that ur getting a card, some players were actually lucky they didn't get a card there. He's way calmer than most refs. Overall good ref tho

I agree the referee let this one get away from him. However this was NOT an easy match to referee. Very difficult. Not enough misconduct was given out. Many of the challenges in this game were cynical and reckless and were not managed properly. Some shaky handball decisions as well. I don’t think he did as poorly as everyone is making it out to be, but he definitely struggled for sure.

7:40 (edit: this game is from 2017 which the handball laws were different but I would argue that the arm is in a natural position so still no handball) this can't be a hand ball because it came off the player's own foot first. Unless the referee is saying the defender deliberately handled the ball after kicking it.
