It was apparently due to licensing, they couldn’t use Critic or characters from the AVGN movie. They also felt that having Fred in place of Critic and the Fuckotron 9000 would tie both games into a connected storyline.

The real reason behind that was to make the games more connected. By having the movie there it isn't properly connected together. This is why the bonus game makes even more sense now.

I'm surprised that Nostalgia Critic didn't make an appearance as a boss, but that may be a bit risky nowadays after that whole controversy with everyone leaving Channel Awesome a few years ago. That situation kind of turned me away from that channel too.

They wanted to make the games connect more properly. The movie being there didn't help things. Also, it was Mike's request to have the Unicorn boss replaced. As for everyone else, they didn't have permission to reuse em. Honestly, the newer versions do felt way more like the show than they originally did.

They wanted these games to connect together better. The movie simply was a monkey wrench. They had to remove it which made the second game more of a true sequel story wise because of it. Personally, the new final boss of the second game makes more sense. Even the movie explained that god was more powerful than both God and Satan combined. It simply doesn't make sense somehow The Nerd won against him. You might be surprised a lot of thought into this. The Sexforce I felt wasn't a funny joke as well could be seen as offensive. The new name for that is a funnier reference in comparison. The Nostalgia Critic being there originally doesn't make much sense to begin with. It should've been one or two sub boss fights that's it. Fred Fucks taking his place was a great decision.
